'Black Jack' Pershing update: I queried Dr. Frank Vandiver, Texas A&M history professor and author of 'Black Jack: The Life and Times of John J. Pershing,' as to the historical accuracy of the longstanding rumor that Gen. Pershing [Fig. 1] eliminated pre-WWI Islamic terrorism in the Philippines by burying Muslim rebels in graves befouled with pig's blood and entrails, and this was his reply: 'This story is hard to stop! I never found any indication that it was true in extensive research on his Moro experiences. This kind of thing would have run completely against his character.' [Fig. 2]
