Suspected Penis Snatcher Beaten to Death by Mob in Gambia

Police in Serekunda, Gambia say 28-year-old Baba Jallow, suspected by locals of stealing another man's penis through sorcery, was beaten to death by a lynch mob Thursday. 'Reports of penis snatching are not uncommon in West Africa,' explains Reuters, 'with purported victims claiming that alleged sorcerers simply touched them to make their genitals shrink or disappear in order to extort cash in the promise of a cure.' The region's last major outbreak of pubic panic took place in 1997, when over a half-dozen suspected sorcerers were beaten or burned to death by mobs.
