False email rumors of a serial killer who uses recordings of a crying baby to lure women out of their homes began circulating in Australia last month, causing a flood of panicked phone calls to the Crime Stoppers hotline. The warnings, which claim the killer has already murdered two women in Sydney and is believed to have relocated in Melbourne, are variants of an e-tale born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana earlier this year which continues to circulate throughout the U.S. Officials in both countries say it has no basis in fact.
