Hot on the heels of an email diatribe claiming that Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry "fought harder for Hanoi as an antiwar activist and a senator than he did against the Vietnamese communists while serving in the Navy" comes the "John and Jane" photo, also circulating via email. In it, someone resembling a very young and out-of-focus John Kerry is seated in the vicinity of "Hanoi Jane" Fonda at what appears to be a '70s antiwar rally. It's real, and that is indeed John Kerry sitting several rows behind Ms. Fonda (who, by the way, hadn't yet been to Hanoi when the photo was snapped). Corbis credits the picture, taken at a Vietnam Veterans Against the War rally at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania in 1970, to photographer Leif Skoogfors.
"Next time you hear a Kerry supporter telling you how much Kerry loves our troops," wrote one person who forwarded the image, "remember this picture."
And if you've ever had your picture taken within 50 yards of Jane Fonda, run for cover. Discuss.
