A man browsing the garden center of a home improvement store in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma was rushed to the hospital last weekend after being bitten by a rattlesnake, according to news reports. Authorities refused to comment on the victim's condition. "The individual had thought that he had hit his hand on a thorn and he discovered that it was a snake,” a spokesperson for the store told reporters. Quick-thinking fellow shoppers killed the viper before it could strike again.
In a somewhat less plausible incident reported last October, a man claimed he was bitten by a rattlesnake in the shoe department of the Brownwood, Texas Wal-Mart store. His story was questioned by Wal-Mart officials, however, especially after doctors at the regional medical center denied treating the man for snakebite.
True or false, both stories should remind folklore buffs of an urban legend dating from the 1960s entitled, appropriately enough, "The Snake in the Store."
