It's that time again Randy Cassingham has announced the finalists for the 2004 Stella Awards, his annual roster of the most frivolous lawsuits filed in the United States. Contenders include a woman who sued because the name of her town was misspelled on her cell phone bill and the mother of a football player who filed suit against the manufacturer of the automobile her son was speeding in when he crashed and died during a snowstorm.
The awards were named after Stella Liebeck, who famously sued McDonald's after spilling a hot cup of coffee on herself and suffering serious burns. Cassingham is careful to point out that the stories he selects are true, to differentiate them from the collection of urban legends that has illegitimately circulated for years as a list of "Stella Award winners."
Update: The 2004 winner was announced January 31.
