America's 'Tough Guy' Sheriff

One year in circulation and still going strong, this email flier touting the accomplishments of Joe Arpaio, the "tough guy" Sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona has clearly struck a chord with a segment of the citizenry fed up with the "coddling" of convicts in the prison system. When inmates at Arpaio's "tent city" at the county jail complained of inhumane conditions during a heat wave two years ago, Arpaio supposedly said: "It's 120 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and they have to wear full battle gear, but they didn't commit any crimes, so shut your damned mouths!"
