Every Internet old-timer (i.e., anyone who's been online more than a year or two) will be familiar with the name Craig Shergold, the subject of the most ubiquitous chain letter of all time. Sixteen years ago when he was but a lad, Mr. Shergold, who resides in England, was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. The chain letter campaign, started by friends and relatives in hopes of cheering him up by landing his name in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most get-well cards ever received, succeeded beyond anyone's wildest dreams. Not only did he set the all-time record, he attracted the attention of a philanthropist who paid for surgery which cured his disease. The chain letter never stopped circulating, however, nor did the cards stop arriving at his door. They're still arriving to this day, with the current total topping 350 million received.
The latest update on the saga comes to us via the Croydon Advertiser in London, which reports that Craig Shergold is now 26 years old and healthy, but jobless, with no prospects in sight despite a degree in computer science and an eagerness to work. "I want to tell people to stop sending the cards, help someone else instead and send me a job offer!" he reportedly pleaded. With the media actively soliciting offers on his behalf, it seems probable Craig will land a decent job before long, but as to the likelihood that those get-well cards will ever stop flooding his mailbox... well, it's nil. Full story.
