It's No Urban Legend: 'Crocodile Hunter' Steve Irwin Dead at 44

By , About.com GuideSeptember 4, 2006

Follow me on:

Wildlife advocate and international TV personality Steve Irwin flirted with death for a living, so much so that premature reports of his demise have circulated for years. It saddens me to confirm that he did, in fact, die today at the age of 44 after being attacked by a stingray off the Great Barrier Reef. Witnesses said Irwin was stung in the chest and apparently succumbed to cardiac arrest while shooting an underwater segment for a new series called "Ocean's Deadliest." About.com's Larry West has more...

He was so alive. He did so much good for the animals. My prayers and sympathy go to his wife and children. Our world is a much sadder, narrower place for his loss. I feel like I have lost a friend.

As an Aussie, there were times when I was ashamed that Steve Irwin represented us to the world. On the other hand, he was loud, energetic and over-the-top. He probably did more for the Australian fauna in 44 years, than Governments have managed over the past 200. My thoughts to his wife and children..

What a shame. Still, he was allowed to cheat death more times than any man ought to be allowed. It only figures that it would be something out of his element [i.e. NOT a croc]

My prayers and deepest sympathies go out to his family and all who loved him. May the God of all comfort bring to mind the wonderful memories of that smile and the sparkle in his eye.

We’ll miss ya, mate. You were a real beauty to us!

There’s a very old saying – “If you play with fire, you’re going to get burned” …. but that doesn’t stop us all from being deeply saddened by Steve’s death.

(14) Jodi says:

My thoughts and prayers go to Steve’s family. They can take some solace that he died doing what he loved. My kids have grown up watching him and they are truly heart-broken. He was like an uncle, even though he was only on t.v. At least he lived to see his two kids and make sure they have a true love of animals. He also spent many years, thugh not enough, with someone he was true soulmates with. God bless Terri and the children.
