I think this picture is from Octorber ,2005 Earthquake in Pakistan. The landscape in the background looks very much like that region and Us Chinooks did take part in rescue operations.
I don’t believe the picture is authentic. Look at the tree just to the left of the nose of the helicopter and the ones below the chopper. They wouldn’t be that still if the down wash from those big rotors were hitting them.
The photo is real. I took in late 2003 while serving as a US Army photojournalist. It was taken during a mission in Afghanistan where US soldiers were going to inspect a site bombed by the Airforce. We ended up staying up on that mountain for 3 or 4 nights. The chinooks would come in to drop off supplies and during this particular instance, they had to pick up a couple people to take back to the rear. FYI, the photo also hung in the office of Paul Wolfowitz for awhile, or so I was told.
