Turns out a "new" email petition demanding that U.S. lawmakers take steps to "keep English as our primary language" is actually a revised version of a months-old petition opposing the extension of Social Security benefits to illegal immigrants. What's wrong with that, you ask? Well, just that the subject matter of the document was changed while the list of signatories was left intact, meaning that many who signed on as supporters of one issue are now listed, by default, as supporters of another.
