I have a hard time believing this is widespread. The web site article has links to four news articles on this subject. All four news articles seem to be written in the same way. (Perhaps from the same source?) It probably happened once or twice and now is being overblown. I would like to see some statistics about how many types of gift cards are susceptible. With the teduim involved in such an effort, I doubt this is a real problem.

My cousin bought two gift cards in the amount of $15 dollars each for me and my daughter. Both were used by someone other than me, my daughter or my cousin. According to the tracking information obtained by a BN manager, both cards were used in the same stores in which they were purchased. I don’t know if a customer could get away with doing this without having the physical card itself (the PIN numbers were not visible on either of the cards, i.e.: the stuff on top of them had not been scratched off). We are suspicious that an employee may have been involved in this scenerio. I’m trying to find other people who have encountered this problem. I also filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.
