Anecdotal reports submitted by pet owners around the U.S. seem to show a correlation between the deaths of some 20 dogs and their consumption of Beneful Dog Food purchased at Wal-Mart stores in December. Some owners say they saw what appeared to be mold growing on the food. However, laboratory testing of samples of the product implicated in two Huntsville, Texas cases found no link between Beneful Dog Food and the canine deaths. Read more...

I told him i thought it was so coincidental since i just switched foods. He assured me it was not the beneful since it was not beeing recalled.I imediately went back to purina one, however my shepherd still continues to eat the Beneful…I am taking them both off immediately!!! So gratefull for this article

(15) Pitty says:

Rebecca – generally, when reffering to a dog you say purebred. Thouroughbred refers to horses, and only horses. Your lab is not a horse.
Don Fillingim, you have a similar problem here, only yours is that you seem to think your dog is human. It is not. Ribs contain small bones which can choke your dog. Generally their minds work on a swallow now, think later basis. Hotdog and hamburger meat can cause kidney failure, because they tend to be high in sodium which is toxic to dogs. Just becasue you can eat it doesn’t mean your dog can. in fact, a dog which is fed a lot of human food is likely to be malnourished due to the fact that what they are eating contains very little of what a dog actually needs. Have a look on the dog food packaging. Notice that the nutritional info in the pack refers to different nutrients than what is on human food packaging. You are going to slowly kill your dog if you don’t get your act together.

April 2, 2007 at 11:32 pm
(19) Don Fillingim says:

In response to Pitty’s comment, I never said that my wife and I feed the dog “ribs.” I said “prime rib” which is quite different. We have never fed her anything with bones in it. It should be noted that dogs are carnivores by nature and need a diet with meat in it. The only reason they eat these vegetable concoctions is because the manufacturers at meat flaver to it. Most of these flavorings are high in sodium, including MSG. It should also be noted that most acute kidney failure in pets is caused by the same factors which cause it in humans–uncontrolled hypertension and uncontrolled diabetes.

(23) Kristin Cardenas says:

Well we fed our dog Ben Beneful for years without any problem. However it hasn’t always had something wrong with it. Something is going on right now with that food and that is why Ben died. For now i would just stear clear of Purina food period. Ben was a healthy dog. A week into his new bag of food he suffered from multiple organ failure and the went into septic shock. They could not control his vomiting at the clinic no matter what they tried. He was without a doubt poisoned by that food, and that food alone.

(24) ELiddy says:

It doesn’t matter what brand of dog food you use because you never know about these recalls until it’s too late. It seems like not only do you need to depend on the company that makes the food, but also the company that sales the food because I have heard a lot of stories about pet food being stored in unsafe conditions at stores, i.e. Petco, Wal-Mart. It’s really a gamble anymore as to what you might be feeding your dog, for that matter even what you are feeding yourself. It’s hard in this day to find companies that are concerned with quality instead of how much money is going in there already overfilled bank accounts.

(25) Dawn says:

My dog has eaten beneful for about 2 years. Once I opened a bag filled with meal worms so I disposed of it. Then in January 2007 I bought a new bag and 1/4 of the way through it my peekapoo started vomitting, had bloody stool, and with in 12 hours she would vomit and at the same time blood shot from her rectum. The ER vet thought she was poisened, it was the DRY food. I reported it, this happened Feb. 11th. I was told to start feeding her the food again and she vomitted immediatley (that is when we realized it was ndeed her dry food). I have her on Nutro Puppy now snce she lost 1 pound and is slowly recovering (She is a small breed dog only weighing 6lbs to begin with). I will never feed her the Purina again, even though they gracously sent me coupons for free bags. The mailman also has a dog who became ill from the dry Purina Beneful so you need to just really be cautious at this time and get your dog into the vet at the first sign of illness, and take the food away if the dog vomits.
hope no one else loses a beloved pet!

At the 4 hr’s his drool is so excessive, like he has peed all over, his chest, our covers on the furniture? The Dr is stumped? (34) ELiddy says:

I definitely will not ever purchase dog food from Walmart or any of those types of stores again. You can’t trust them. I have heard the sale expired food and do not store the food in their warehouse correctly (which can cause mold). I no longer trust these big dog food companies either, i.e. Purina. They use all the same crap ingredients and then charge you twice as much. I used to feed my dogs Beneful then switched after reading all these stories. I’m so sorry for all you whose dogs got sick, but thank you for warning us about it. We now feed our dogs Buckeye Professional. You can only find it at certain feed store dealers. I know that probably won’t work for some people, but you can check out their website to find a dealer close to you. I really trust this company and I noticed the food we are using does not contain wheat gluten. I just hope they don’t turn into corporate money hungry jerks like the rest of these pet food companies.

(35) Peggy says:

Our dog Tucker, a 13 1/2 year old Sheltie had been eating Beneful for a couple of years with no problem. I had purchased a small bag of it 2 weeks ago to start mixing in with a new diet food the vet was recommending. I had not started the new diet food yet. Tucker died a couple of days after the new bag of Beneful was opened. We thought it was a series of small strokes; the vet said that he did not seem to die of kidney failure. I was researching info on the pet food recall for my mother-in-law and found a link on this Beneful connection. Tucker had some of the same symptoms – heavy breathing, weakness, loss of bladder control. He collapsed in our house and died within 30 minutes of collapsing. Now, I’m thinking there was something wrong with this new bag I bought. But I bought it at Target, not Wal-Mart. I am going to call both Purina and my vet tomorrow to see what they think. All I know is that we miss him greatly and he did not suffer long, like some of the pets that have the kidney failure from the other recalled food.

(36) patty says:

Are you all saying this has something to do with the recall or just problems with Beneful food. The dry food doesn’t contain any wheat gluten and isn’t that what the recall is all about? My dog seems fine and has always eaten dry Beneful, 7 years now.

(37) JP Prichard says:

Beneful. Its all she eats.Cassie, 65 lb German Shepherd/Lab mix. Two days ago the dog ate nothing. Yesterday 7am, woke up to four piles of vomit and what I thought was incredibly thin black diarrhea (blood turns out). Thinking she’s ok left for work, my wife calls to say she’s having a problem, so I come home. 11am the dog squats and a STREAM of blood comes out. 1/2 – 3/4 cup at least. Went to the vet immediately. Of course, she was dehydrated. Hemocrit was way down due to bleeding and clotting was bad (12-17 normal, she’s over 100) They put her on IV fluids, and her bloodwork is improving. I’ll be taking her home this afternoon and watching like a hawk.

In retrospect, she vomited a few times about two weeks; it had grass in it so I wasn’t very worried. And she’s been wanting to go outside very frequently, though I’m not sure its more more frequently urination – “hey, let’s watch the dog pee?” – figured it was just because its warming up and she can’t decide where she wants to be.

Vet thinks its rat poison. No idea where she could have gotten it – I don’t have anything like that around. I really hope it’s not the Beneful because its not on the list (which is why I was still feeding it to her). If it is Beneful, there’s gonna be a lot more dead pets out there.

(38) James Taylor says:

It’s hard for humans to keep a healthy Diet, but we can do it for our dogs and cats
Since the recent recall of pet foods, I find pet parents thinking of their pets as children. I have lost both. There is no comparison as I have lost both; our dogs and cats s are not children dressed up in furry customs. While some vets can specialize in certain areas like nutrition, which require hours of research and practical work the average vet has 3-5 hours of nutrition studies per semester a typical veterinary medical student spends about 4,000 hours in classroom, laboratory, and clinical study. That’s a lot of education, and without specializing, very little of it is on food. So why do so many people exclusively trust their vet’s opinion? If they sell it how much can they trust their opinion?
They are professionals and are devoted to the care of our pets but are sorely lacking when it comes to a pet’s diet. Why is ‘dried’ well? These are pre-cooked recipes. Meal is always better. For example 5 pound of chicken the water removed becomes one pound of chicken meal. Because the ingredients list on the back of the bag is listed proportionally by weight, and water is heavy, pre-cooked. You want the ‘good’ ingredients to be towards the top of the list. And stuff you’re getting for the weight. (Chicken and or any other meat or poultry without meal drop down to at least the 5th ingredient in the final product. Everything is pre-weight recipes. If you get some garbage ingredients further down the list, it’s less of a problem than if it’s near the top, the reason your vet thinks so highly of the pet food they sell probably has more to do with money than nutrition. In vet school, the only classes offered on nutrition usually last a few weeks, and are taught by representatives from the pet food companies. Vet students may also receive free food for their own dogs and cats at home. One last note: Avoid byproducts. One of the dirty little secrets kept by the pet food industry is that some by-products also contain substances such as abscesses and cancerous material. In my opinion, feeding slaughterhouse wastes to animals increases their chances of getting cancer and other degenerative diseases. Some meat, especially glandular tissue, may contain high levels of hormones, which may also cause serious health problems including cancer. Supermarkets that sell pet food sell the lowest grade of dog and cat food.
Avoid Animal Digest, artificial flavors and colors. BHT. Animal and poultry MUST be in meal format for kibble or you lose75% due to water weight. Just move it down in the finished weight to the 6th or 7th Ingredient
One of the biggest offenders, in my Opinion, is Beneful.
If you know how to read ingredients, there is more sugar, sorbitol, salt, then vegetables except for the cheap ground corn, which is mostly un-digestible. The nice colors are artificial.

In addition, if wheat is coming from China, we should also worry about eating at Chinese restaurants and where are our grocery items coming from.
Warning Warning, do NOT buy any dog or cat food form Supermarkets.
I believe Nutro dog and cat food is the best, They have been around for 81 years, and don’t advertise or sell to supermarkets.

Some of what JP Prichard said makes sense. However, his choice of dog food–Nutro–is on the recall list! I just started our dog on Beneful thinking it wasn’t on recall list and healthy for her. Now I’m not so sure. Thanks to all for posting their experiences. I’ll certainly be watching our “Ginger” really carefully for any digestive symptoms.

I highly recommend Buckeye Professional dog food. Just google Buckeye dog food and you can find thier website to get more information. I won’t ever switch back to those “bigger” brand name dog foods after all of this horrible recall mess. I would be careful with Beneful, it seems a lot of people are having the same problems (kidney failure-maybe) with their dogs as the dogs that ate the recalled dog food. You have to figure these companies aren’t going to recall thier dog food until they absolutely have to because they are going to lose a lot of money by doing it. I would also be careful, like J. Taylor said, about purchasing dog food in grocery stores, wal-mart, target, etc. I hope everyone’s pets are okay and I’m sorry to hear of those who lost thier beloved pets.

Boston Terrier 5yo. Beneful since big enough. Now I’m worried, because he will go a few days and hardly eat, then feel better….feels better so eats more, then not hungry for days again. I’m taking off beneful and see if better. Still, now I wonder what to feed.

Now that I have read all the posts I do also recall him breathing hard at certain times and being really thirsty but I just attributed it to the regurgitating. I have no idea what to feed him now. My older black lab has been on Beneful Wt management for years. In the past 6 months he has exhibited serious signs: heavy breathing, excess water intake, all over body weakness -difficulty getting up and down, barking weakened,
urinating indoors instead of the usual good behavior by going outside on a timely schedule, vomiting (I had assumed perhaps he had eaten some grass outside and that caused it). I had been carefully monitoring the pet food recall lists, however, I am very concerned with this product now. I had made purchases at walmart and the local kroger grocery store. I will no longer purchase from walmart because I had found problems with pet food from there before. I am going to have to find another product for my dog. thank you for sharing this on your website. It is enough of a coincidence for me to take him off this product asap. I hope this makes it to the manufacturer.

I have been feeding my corgis beneful for 7 years and suplement the meals with tables scraps……….they are the healthiest dogs I have ever had.

Back in the 40′s, 50′s and 60′s, before the commercial dog food industy grew out of convienece to owners, everyone fed their dogs table scraps and dogs routinely lived to 15-18 years.

Thats what brought dogs(wolves) to our ancestors, scraps that man would not eat.

Feed the dogs scraps and beneful if you want a healthy dog.

I only came across this website tonight while looking for some insight from others who have lost their pets. Snuggles was a wonderful pet and brought us much joy for the last 7 years. I’m just curious…where is everyone from? It appears as if this may be something localized, say, in a certain part of the country, but we can’t help each other out without more details…Is there any way you could all tell me what states you are from? I’ve heard reports so far from FL, TX, and TN, but nothing on the West Coast, which could also mean that this is something on its way here. Any further info. you folks could provide would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

I bought Beneful at Wal-Mart on Dec. 9th. He started throwing up daily, became increasingly lethargic, finally was unable to use his back legs, and lost control of his bodily functions. We tried everything, and not until after Christmas did I see the article about Beneful. We immediately changed his food, but the damage was irreversible, resulting in finally having to put him to sleep on April 10th. He was my “only child” and best friend of 12 years, and Purina offered me some COUPONS!
I personally know of 3 other local pet owners who also lost their pets after buying Beneful at Wal-Mart in December – same symptoms.
PLEEEEEASE don’t feed this to your dog!

We laid our little Ruby to rest today.Ruby is a 2 1/2 year old SHITZU I still cant stop crying. It was like losing our baby.I don’t know if it was the Beneful or not.She seemed fine 3 days ago.The she started vomiting. Not alot,so I just figured it was the heat. Then yesterday I noticed a little blood in her stool. We are not near a 24hr vet so I snuggled her and we both fell asleep..Later in the evening she seemed to be really thirsty ..All she wanted to do was drink. she seemed to hold it down. She then decided she wanted to go to bed.So off she went upstairs.
About 1 hr later one of my boys was screaming.I ran to see.Just as I was about to go upstairs I saw what he was screaming about. There was about 2-3 cups of blood on the stairs and very foul smelling. We ran to find the dog and she was sleeping at the foot of my bed.She looked very tired and from what I could
see the blood had come from her bum.In stayed up all night with her and all she wanted to do was drink. It got so bad she would fall asleep in her water dish.So finally I wrapped her up and brought her to bed with me.Its about 3am by now.
I woke up around 5 and she wasn’t in my bed..My son came upstairs and was crying and said “Mom Ruby don’t look too good”.So I grabbed my housecoat and downstairs I went.I picked her up and she was cold(she hadn’t been gone yet)I wrapped her in a blanket and we sat with her.She started moving her paw as if she was saying good by.Then she took her last breath.
Its been a very hard day.Like I said its like losing a member of your family. She always slept in my bed so needless to say thats why I’m awake.
I don’t know what killed her and have searched the web high and low.Its just so hard tonight to go to sleep without her

Just want to say that I’ve read all the comments posted above and have learned alot. My sincere condolences to those who have lost their dogs. I lost my king shephard 8 years ago to Epilepsy and I still cry today. It took me 6 years before I could even touch another dog. Now I have a 2.5 year Shiz Tsu that I would take a bullet for. He has got to be the cuttest little thing ever! I don’t feed him Beneful and will NEVER feed him this after reading your stories. For at least 4 months now he’s been on ‘ Kibble and bits’ and seems ok with it. I go back and forth with the a brand from “Bark n’ Fitz” he’ll eat it but doesn’t love it. No side effects (thank God) but he is feed alot of veggies cause he enjoys them. He love peeled apples and will go through hoops for a carrot. I thank God that he is ok so far, other than the ‘reverse sneezes’ that are prone to this breed. I have to be honest, these episodes freak me out. I worry if he has them when he’s alone. I think that everyone who has shared their hearts with us about Beneful honesty equate their dogs illnesses to this and we should believe them. In fact, stay away from anything that is made in China. Sorry to offend anyone, but seriously…. if the regulators won’t take a stand, I/WE WILL!
Thanks again. Fingers crossed.

(75) Shellye says:

In the middle of the night i heard my dog make a sound in the bathroom. I got up and found that he had diarrhea on my bathroom rug. It was in the middle of the night or i would have been thinking more coherent. He hid in the closet because he knew he had done something wrong and looked at me with those big black dashchund eyes. I didn’t get on to him; just cleaned it up and went back to bed. This morning when i got up (June 8th, Sunday, 2008) i went in to the bathroom and saw a huge puddle of blood on the floor. I immediately thought he might be dead. He usually sleeps in my bed and i thought that that was weird he wasnt in my room. I walked into the living room. there were puddles of blood and vomit all over my living room, in our hallway, and in my sons room. He was still alive, but just set looking at me in a dazed fashion. I took him out on the patio, filled up his water bowl (which was completely empty) and started thinking what could have done this. My dog very seldom goes outside. He is the very spoiled baby of the family. I could only think of the fact that he had got into something that had done this. In the backyard i have a square of grass about 8X8 that is enclosed. It is only mowed, nothing put on it. the rest of the time he stays inside. The only diferent thing that has happened is I bought new dogfood on Friday the 6th, in the evening. I poured him a huge bowl of dogfood because he had been out for about 3 days and i had been giving him table food. I don’t like to do that because i am afraid it will upset his sensitive stomach. He’s small and hypoglycemic. I have tried to keep him on dogfood as i have heard taht is best for him. I fed him Pedigree since birth. About 4 months ago my daughter bought a huge bag of beneful for her dog, then gave it to me as she got rid of the dog. I changed Riley to this food. He had diarrhea for a couple of days. I just thought he must be sensitive to the change. After that there was no problem. he acted fine, had hard stools, never threw up, and kep up his energy. He ate very little of this food on Friday evening and on Saturday he was following me around wanting table food. I don’t even think he touched his dog food on Saturday. I thought he was just being picky after having table food. I got down and tried to hand feed him the beneful. He spit it out. I again thought, he was just refusing it for want of my food. the bowl is still full. I can tell that he started out having loose stools in the yard, then diarrhea early Sunday morning, and then rich deep red blood, then watery blood. It is now 11:45 and he hasnt passed anymore blood. He has no appetite, walks a few steps, and has drank almost a 1/2 gallon of water. He has thrown up the water twice. He usually likes to lay in the sun, he keeps going to the shady part of the patio. I brought him in and held him for awhile but he wanted to stretchout. I thought he was doing better so i let him lay at the end of my bed on a blanket. He threw up the water within about 3 minutes. I came and researched the net and found this site. I would have not thought about it being the beneful, but there is really no other reason for this. After reading the blogs i prepared my son that Riley might die. I will call the vet in the morning. I am hopeful that he ate a little enough amount that it hasnt had a long term effect. he seems to have a tad more energy than he did this morning. I read about the rice and turkey. I will try to get him to eat this later. I tried yogurt earlier and had to force him to take a lick of it. This is so unlike him. He eats anything he thinks i eat. I pray that we don’t lose Riley. He is 4 years old. We have had him since he was 6 weeks old and i paid almost 500.00 for him. He is a miniature dachschund. I have always babied him for fear that because of his size he might get sick easily. You never know how much a part of your family your pet is until you have to prepare for their death or lose them unexpectedly. This has been a hard experience for my son who is 12. I will be warning everyone i know about beneful; and at this point i am not sure about dog food at all. I may switch to table food from now on. I don’t understand what is in the food that has caused this..but i will be learning more about this from this point on.

We have two dogs. A 10 yr.old Miniature Schnauzer and a 10 yr. old Rough Collie. About a year ago we started feeding the Schnauzer (and the Collie 2 months later) “Beneful” dog food. They loved it. We fed it to both until 2 months ago when the Schnauzer started to “pee” in the floor (he had never done that), began to lose weight and was drinking literally a gallon of water/day. We had no idea what was wrong and then my wife (a nurse of 35 years) noticed the Schnauzer had sweet smelling breath like humans with ketoacidosis. We proceeded to check his blood sugar and found it to be 500, normal is under 200 I believe (on a human meter). We immediately got to our Vet and found he has diabetes. We switched to a mostly protein diet (stopped the Beneful) and began administering Insulin 2 x/day. He almost immediately began to regain his weight, stopped “peeing” in the floor and got back his appetite. At the time all this was happening he goes blind from diabetes induced cataracts. Okay, no one was sure of the cause, so since we had these big bags of Beneful we continued to feed it to our big Collie. Well, strange that 2 months after stopping the Beneful for the Schnauzer, the Collie is drinking enormous amounts of water, losing weight, lying down all day, now has the sweet breath,is blind from cataracts and is also now on Insulin. Coincidence? I don’t think so. The only common link is the Beneful dogfood. The Collie is outside all the time and the Schnauzer inside all the time and they both developed diabetes exactly 1 year after starting on Beneful dogfood. I am going to see if I can find out the content of carbohydrates in this food and proceed with conversation at Purina. I sincerely hope this may help someone in the future and I would really be interested to hear if anyone else’s dogs have developed diabetes while on this food.

I have been feeding our dog Beneful for a year. She has been sicker than all the other dogs we have ever had put together. The vet would do tests and always say “it must be something she ate”. Well, I believe it was something she ate–Benenful. I watched the pattern of getting sick and then when she was well it was right back to dog food. Then I read an article naming Beneful as a toxic food. Now I trust no processed dog foods and I make my own. We have had no sickness since.

After using Beneful Healthy Weight for at least 5 years with no problems, we got a bag with grian mites. My little Boston Terrier suddenly became ill with weakness, paleness, panting, loss of control, etc. Despite taking her off the food, within three weeks she stopped eating and drinking completely and lost all her body weight. Our vet tried everything but could not help her. I put her out of her misery 1 month ago tomorrow.
Lady was my perfect little angel and best friend. Our vet bills ran over $2,000.00. Purina sent me $60.00.
I purchased this Beneful at a PetSmart in Wheatridge, Colorado in October 2008.
My heart goes out to all of you who lost your beloved pets. It is so hard to think what we fed them may have killed them.

Check your Beneful dry dog food before you feed it to your dog ! Better Yet – STAY AWAY FROM BENEFUL ! My last 2 bags that I’ve purchased were full of tiny, tiny bugs. The inside of the bag looked like a fine dust of tan which were 1000,s of bugs crawling around. My dog was sick, loss of appetite and she had to be dewormed ! My dog is a 12 LB pomeranian. After reading these articles tonight I am frustrated – Why hasnt Purnina posted “Cautions” regarding Beneful – Oh..thats right..if they did they would be admiting fault for their crappy dog food ! I emailed Purnina tonight – hopefully I’ll get a response. I would highly recommend not buying Beneful – the BAD bags were purchased in August 08 @ Wal-Mart the 2nd bag purchased in Dec. 08 at a local pet store.

I am shocked and horrified to hear that you all are feeding your dogs such horrendous food. You ALL need to go to http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com and educate yourselves on the toxins you are feeding your dogs. You should ALWAYS feed your dogs a 5 or 6 star dog food. NEVER EVER FEED ANYTHING YOU CAN GET FROM WALMART. All of their food is garbage. Please go read about the food you are feeding your dogs and make a change for their sake. I personally only feed my three dogs Canidae. I have tried some of the six star foods but Canidae seems to agree with their system the most.

The dog food website lists beneful as a ONE star food (lowest quality you can buy).

Canidae is listed as a FIVE star.

Here is what the site says about beneful:

Review Date: Sun March 5, 2006 Would you recommend the product? No | Price you paid?: Not Indicated | Rating: 0

Pros:
Cons: Inadequate meat content, by-products, low quality grains, soy, artificial colourants.

The primary ingredient in the food is a low quality grain. Corn is a problematic grain that is difficult for dogs to digest and thought to be the cause of a great many allergy and yeast infection problems. We prefer not to see this used in dog food.

The second ingredient is by-products. It is impossible to ascertain the quality of by-products and these are usually products that are of such low quality as to be rejected for use in the human food chain, or else are those parts that have so little value that they cannot be used elsewhere in either the human or pet food industries. The AAFCO definition of chicken by-product meal is “a meal consisting of the ground, rendered, clean parts of the carcass of slaughtered chicken, such as necks, feet, undeveloped eggs and intestines, exclusive of feathers, except in such amounts as might occur unavoidable in good processing practice.”

Corn appears a second time as the third ingredient, this time as gluten meal. The AAFCO definition of corn gluten meal is “the dried residue from corn after the removal of the larger part of the starch and germ, and the separation of the bran by the process employed in the wet milling manufacture of corn starch or syrup, or by enzymatic treatment of the endosperm”. In plain English, that which remains after all the nutritious bits have been removed.

Wheat flour is another grain fragment. The use of wheat is a significant negative: wheat is believed to be the number one cause of allergy problems in dog food. This is another ingredient we prefer not to see used at all in dog food.

Beef tallow is a very low quality fat obtained from the tissue of cattle in the commercial process of rendering. We are appalled to see sugar in dog food. Animal digest is a further low quality ingredient of indeterminate source which AAFCO define as “material which results from chemical and/or enzymatic hydrolysis of clean and undecomposed animal tissue. The animal tissues used shall be exclusive of hair, horns, teeth, hooves and feathers, except in such trace amounts as might occur unavoidably in good factory practice and shall be suitable for animal feed”.

Beef, the 7th ingredient, is the sole named meat product in the food but since this is beef inclusive of its water content (about 80%) and this ingredient will weigh only about 20% of its wet weight once water is removed (as it must be to make kibble) it is unlikely that this is the true first ingredient in the food and would be more accurately placed much further down the ingredient list. This is insufficient to make up a significant proportion of the food.

Rice flour and soy flour are grain fragments and filler. Soy is a poor quality source of protein in dog food, and a common cause of allergy problems. Some believe that it is the number 1 cause of food allergies in dogs (outstripping even wheat). We are appalled to see sugar in this food.

We prefer not to see the use of artificial colourants in dog food. Some of these are believed to be carcinogenic and cause hyperactivity disorders and are banned from use in many countries. See the main page for more explanation of the dangers of chemical additives to pet foods.

(89) Richard says:

This is old but still seems to survive. Beneful dog food was not the reason the pets passed away. Very extensive investigation was conducted along with testing including samples of the food from the two dog owners, samples of the food from the stores where it was purchased and samples from the manufactoring plant. All samples used had the same product and run code. One consumer whose pet was lost wanted an independent analysis and gave samples to his vet which in turn had it tested by an independent lab. All testing and samples including the independent lab and those by Purina did not show anything wrong with the food nor did it show the presence of aflotoxins which can arise from processing and storage.

A couple of things to express which hopefully will put this to bed once and for all. First, had there been something wrong with the food, there would have been large scale deaths reported, did not happen. Second, and us baby boomers are probably the only ones here that remember this, a Federal Manadate from the early days of the cold war stipulated that pet food (dog and cat) had to be made in such a way so as to use it for human consumption. Back in the days everybody was worried about the food supply in the event of nuclear attack.

I hope this finally puts this to rest.

I will now retire to my backyard bomb shelter.

About the reversed sneeze: I know what you mean I love my Shih-Tzu too and it is very scary when the snorting (reverse sneeze) happens. But seriously all you have to do is simply put your finger over their nostrils for a second. I saw this on tv I think maybe it was on DOGS 101. It has stopped what I call an attack immediately! I try to pass this on to all Shih- Tzu owners. I have a 8 year old Shih-Tzu that eats the beneful, he just ran out and I am so confused as to what to buy for him. I might try cooking for him myself again. I know the recall happened a little while ago but I really don’t trust the companies to do the proper testing etc. if they did that in the first place a lot of loved pets would still be here.
And yes I have to agree with you I think Shih-Tzus are so adorable! Good Luck with your Baby! LuvBailey

I know this article is dated. But warning I starting my dog on Beneful Healthy Weight and he has progressively gotten worse with his back legs. He did not even want to walk or get up.
I started eliminating changes in his lifestyle. Guess What!!!! Took him off that food starting seeing improvement in 4 days. Taking to the vet to check for any damages. BEWARE!!!

We switched our older shepherd to beneful recently. Our vet suggested a puppy mix in her adult food to help keep some weight on, etc…we added the beneful puppy food. Within two days, she stopped eating all together. She did not eat for 5 days….we had scheduled earlier in the week to put her down today (Sat). We thought it was “her time”…a 13 year old shepher with signs of advancing hip displasia….something didn’t seem right. We all spent some time with her Monday night, hoping she would be fit to last for the week when we could all be togethor with her on today, Saturday. Throwing up, lethargic, and always wanting to be alone….we gave it a try….we switched her food on Wednesday night. She ate a little….then more on Thursday, more on Friday, and almost back to normal today….Saturday. We cancelled our appointment today! Can’t be the food, huh??? What a sickening week….

Please people put your animals on a good food bought from the vets office. I noticed that the sack & food appeared to be much fresher. I think Science Diet is highly recommended by vets.
My dog eats anything. I do mean anything.
My heart goes out to all of you who have lost anmials. I have bought food from Wal-Mart for years but I will now only buy from the a vet. My dog is too valuable to me.

FINALLY Just got the proof today and its in a zip lock bag to show hubby. We foster pets & one had worms (100% issolated from our pets) so I became very educated on the subject. That’s when I started noticing things I would have never know to look for. Sickening!!! I’ve found worm eggs in OUR dogs (not the fosters) dry food Beneful! We washed out dog bowls, dumped out the full dog food container, washed it out and bought more food from a different store. 2 weeks later, today, I went to feed the dogs and in the first scoop saw a worm wiggling around. So much for being paranoid (as I’ve been called!) it’s true! While our dogs are treated for worms regularly (precaution because of fostering) and did get a clean bill of health 2 wks ago from vet when I noticed the eggs, I’m absolutely FREAKING OUT! Feel like we’ve been poisoning our dogs and paying $ to do it! I’m done w/Beneful (the other our dogs “used to like”-but not anymore is Kibble & Bits). Either I’m going to start making their food or buying it from the vet, $’s tight but I’ll figure out a way-I can’t emotionally afford loosing a pet due to something I could have prevented. These companies need to be looked into AGAIN by the FDA. Any advice on how to get this started? I’ve got a worm for proof LOL if needed!
My heart goes out to ALL the above posters who lost a pet or had to deal w/health issues-This wasn’t your fault & it is wrong for this to be happening.
PLEASE be carefull, look @ the food & if you see little things on the food pieces-it may NOT be flavoring like we assumed it was. If you see them look through all of it for anything small & white or off white & kind of triangular shape & obviously anything moving!

I have been feeding my bulldog Beneful Healthy Weight for the last 3 years and he is as healthy as ever. When I got my puppy I put him on Beneful puppy food and he is thriving. I’ve never seen worms in ANY of the food.
