Shane Bernier

Follow me on:

Following in the footsteps of Web legend Craig Shergold, 7-year-old leukemia patient Shane Bernier of Lancaster, Ontario is the subject of an email chain letter soliciting birthday cards in hopes of securing him a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records. Though Guinness retired the category of "most get well cards received" in 1991 after Shergold, who had brain cancer at the time, managed to collect 30 million of them in just two years, it has been reported that a new category is being considered to give Shane Bernier a shot at his own title. At last report he was receiving over 1,000 birthday cards a day. Read more...

when I first saw the news video about Shane… my heart shkipped a beat. What a heart breaking story for him; his Mother I can not imagine her pain. But Shane so innocent, his smiles so encouraging. I have a son named Shane. Although he is alot older, he himself has a 7 yr old son. This hit home; I started sending cards. In each card I send Shane funny face and happy sticker to help him smile some more. I’ve spread his wish ~ it is still going and going. We are all on your side Shane. You have stolen our HEARTS!!

I was reading a back issue of the Ottawa Citizen recently, where it said that Shane cannot read the cards sent to him in English, so his mom and grandparents have to audibly translate for him. He CAN read the ones written in French though.

Moral of the story: If you’re going to send him a card, please pick out one written in French.

Who wants to receive a card written in a language they can’t understand. I wish the news media had told us this when they first broke the story and before I had already gone to the store and picked out my (English) card for him. I know he appreciates them all though. He’s a real sweetie.

That same article also said that Shane especially loves Spider Man and pop-up cards.

I read somewhere else that he also loves frogs, motorcycles, video games and all sports but especially legos.

If you visit the A-Channel Ottawa website and then type ‘Shane Bernier’ into ‘search’ and then click on ‘video’ you can watch a short film clip of him opening some cards from his hospital bed at CHEO, with his mom by his side.

You could see a warm smile come to his face, as he opened each card and it was very moving. I find myself watching it over and over each day. He’s my hero!

If you visit

http://www.myspace.com/cardsforshane

you can read the many e-card greetings he has already received and even add on one of your own. He’s one popular boy with a lot of fans.

If you visit http://www.1053kissfm.com you will be able to see his picture and read more about his story.

If you visit http://www.achannel.ca/ottawa you will be able to watch some recent (Feb.21 /07) news footage of Shane opening some cards in hospital.

Just type Shane Bernier into the search area and then click on video. The sound fades in and out at first but picks up after that.

I read somewhere that he also accepts regular greeting cards (for example Valentine, Christmas, Easter, etc) and Best Wishes cards too. He just likes receiving cards period.

Yes, I think we can all send him a birthday card each year, not just this one time. After all, he has many more birthday’s to come. :)

It is a really sad story for such a young boy. He has great ambition though. My class has recently come across this information and our whole class are sending Birthday Cards to shane. My friend and I have made emails of Shanes dream and sent them to every contact we had. they are steady going around and I hope he reaches the Guiness Book of world records. But more importantly I hope he will be okay.

(11) Songbird says:

I have a neat idea.

After Shane’s birthday of May 30th is over, we should have another card drive for him but this time, sending him Get Well, Best Wishes and even postcards of our local areas (so he can do a bit of “armchair travelling” from his hospital bed), Happy Harvest cards in the fall and then Christmas cards, as it nears closer to Dec.

His mother said that the cards make him so happy that they are literally boosting his immune system by increasing his blood counts, so I have a feeling he would get a real kick out of that. What do you all think about that idea?

He’s become Canada’s newest hero. :)

There’s an article in both the Ottawa and Toronto Sun today (April 1) about Shane, if anyone cares to read it. Just visit their wesbites and click on the article.

It said Shane will be undergoing radiation on his birthday (May 30th) and will continue chemo until June/08, so these cards are a real boost to his morale in the meantime.

Also there is a hospital program at CHEO called “chemo angels” where penpals write to him each day, so when he comes home from hospital treatments and finds letters in the mail, it boosts his spirits.

In other words, he would welcome your letters too–not just cards. It would be a bonus if you could write them in French.

Thanks.

In other words, you can send him letters too (not just cards). If you can write them in French, that would be a bonus (otherwise, his mother will translate them out loud for him).

RE: Shane’s e-mail address

I should have corrected that. I too was not able to send him an e-mail via that address (which I obtained from Shane’s official webpage at http://www.shane.checkoutmypage.com )

If anyone knows the CORRECT e-mail to contact Shane at, please tell us.

He has many fans who would like to contact him directly, instead of anonymously on Net message boards.

By the way, the Ottawa Citizen article (April 12/07) said that Guiness has retired the ‘most cards’ category, so Shane won’t be in there, even if he surpasses the 3 million mark.

However our eyes, he’s already won. I think we already agree on that. He will go down in history books as being one of Canada’s greatest heroes. :)

If everyone who sent a card included $1, think how much money his family would have to pay for his hospital bills……. Everyone could spare $1 and it would go for such a great cause!!

April 17, 2007 at 1:49 pm
(25) Anonymous says:

Hospital bills? I assumed OHIP paid for everything.

If that’s not the case, given that Shane was diagnosed with leukemia at 5 (he turns 8 in May), they must be insurmountable, unless insurance is covering it.

His mom is a single parent too, so that must be doubly stressful, to have a sick child and then financial worries on top of it.

I’ll send one along, but everyone should check out then article on the inevitable horror of these kinds of requests. These chain letters keep going for years after they should have ended. People and organizations have had to pick up and move locations due to the never-ending stream of mail.

I hope this doesn’t happen to Shane and his family.

I just saw on the Ottawa news today (April 27 / 07) that Shane’s card count is now up to 400,000. That’s almost half a million and more than doubled since his last card count of just a few weeks ago.

Hopefully by May 30th (ie. his birthday) he will have reached at least a million cards.

As to what he will do with them all, when his birthday has come and gone, who knows. The point is that it made him happy and that’s all that counts.

Perhaps he could donate the cards he doesn’t want to keep at an auction, with the proceeds going to CHEO. If each card sold for $5.00 each, imagine how much money could be raised for CHEO!

The latest celebrities to send him a card are Judge Judy and a hockey player (think his first name is Patrick).

Shane and his mom appeared on Canada AM this morning (today–May 30th–being his 8th birthday).

You can watch a video of this by visiting the Canada AM website at:

http://www.ctv.ca/ Young cancer patient receives 2 M birthday cards (Type Shane Bernier into the search area, if you cannot seem to access it.)

The video takes a few seconds to download, so please be patient.

Shane has Ottawa Senators stickers on his face (in case you wondered what it was). He looks great and very happy.

Due to the immense volumne, they cannot possibly keep all the cards permanently, so they will scan them to disc (for future memories) before ultimatelty recycling them.
