(1) Al Nofi says:

“Battleship” is not a synonym for “warship.”

The USS New York is an amphibious warfare ship, not a battleship.

In response to Al Nofi’s comment, I disagree: Merriam-Webster Dictionary states – battleship n: a warship of the most heavily armed and armored class.

Donna, in that case Al Nofi is correst. Compared to a battleship this ship is very lightly armed and virtually unarmored.

All battleships are warships – but not all warships are battleships. Warships also include cruisers, submarines, aircraft carriers, etc.

David, You say that the USS NEW YORK
is Scheduled for launch in 2007, but
I found several web sites & some offical navy web sites that say its not untill fall of 2008 or early 2009.

One web site said it was to be christen in 2007 only.

here is the address of one of them…
http://www.navsource.org/archives/10/09/0921.htm

this site also has two photos of it in dry dock in august 2006.

I also would like to Make a note to all your readers, The USS NEW YORK is number 21, not 17.

Number 17 is the USS San Antonio.

(7) Brian says:

The process for naval vessels is construction, launching, christening, pre-commissioning work ups, aka sea trials, and finally formal commissioning when the ship begins active deployable service. Often the confusion over dates is related to which stage of the process is being referred to.

(8) Jethro says:

Battleships are specifically heavily armoured warships and consists of largest caliber of guns which I don’t think the USS New York has one.

(9) KAthleen says:

I noticed that there was no visible weaponry on the USS New York and thought that perhaps it was not yet complete! The classification issue sure clears it up. The USS New York, with no visible defense(guns or missles) cannot participate in a “gun battle”. It provides support for the other groups by deploying warriers to land and sea and by accepting helocopters.
