Free Laptops from Ericsson?

By , About.com GuideMarch 9, 2007

Several readers have notified me over the past few weeks that Sony Ericsson executive Anna Swelung graciously sent them an email promising a free laptop computer if they would just forward the message to 20 other people. Oh, dear. It was my lot once again to be the bearer of bad tidings. The company has confirmed there is no such person as "Anna Swelung," and in any case the very idea of rewarding habitual forwarders of chain letters with laptop computers borders on the criminally negligent. Anything that sounds too good to be true has to be a hoax. Couldn’t imagine any company giving away thousands of laptops.

I think it is just a way for a company to get free email addresses so they can be sold to spammers.

What is the benefit of sending that e-mail for SONY ERICSSON?

It is Feb. 14, 2008. I have just received the e-mail about the free laptop. To good to be true; felt like a chain letter; haven’t found anything on the internet that supports that this is or ever was a true event.

It is time to put an end to this unconstitutional behavior. It is illegal to misinform consumers and continue these rediculous hoax. Law enforcement needs to find a way to track the initial entity of this unethical hoax and take the necessary legal proceedings to ensure that this individual learns his/her lesson.

(16) *Sighs* says:

A close friend sent this to me, completely oblivious to the spammy-scammy nature of it. He wouldn’t believe me until I showed him several hoax sites, including this one – and he is an intelligent, educated guy complete with a Masters degree; even now he cites “it’s **probably** not true”. It’s amazing the effect that blind faith and hope can have on the human brain.

Last year, I received an email from the Dell Outlet store telling me I had won a laptop. All I had to do wad send som personal details. I phoned them to let them know about the hoax email that was circulating and lo and behold, it wasn’t a hoax and I did get a laptop. So not everyone that responds is a total moron although I pays to do a little chacking first.

May 27, 2009 at 5:28 pm
(24) Tia says:

People fall for anything. I got this same email a couple of years ago, but for Microsoft instead of Ericsson. I believe that’s when I told people to stop sending me chains without researching them first. Think about it people. It takes one minute to load 20 email addresses into a message and send it. How many free laptops do you think would be given away if this were real? The company would go out of business. Do you realize how many people would end up with a free laptop?
