Folks are writing in to ask if it's true that dozens of brands of dog and cat food manufactured by a company called Menu Foods have been recalled due to reports of kidney failure and death in an unknown number of pets who consumed the products. It is true. According to a company press release, the recall was deemed prudent even though initial testing failed to establish a direct causal link between the products and pet deaths reported between December 2006 and March 2007. (UPDATE: Tests have now confirmed a link between the recalled food and illness and death in cats and dogs, according to the FDA.)
The recall pertains only to gravy-style wet food sold in cans and pouches, but the number of brands involved is extensive, including Wal-Mart, Eukeneuba, Iams, Science Diet, and at least 40 others. (UPDATE: As of the first week of April 2007, the recall has been expanded to include several brands of dog biscuits, dog treats, and one brand of dry cat food (Hill's m/d feline Prescription Diet).
A complete list of cat and dog foods affected is available on the Menu Foods Website or by calling 866-895-2708. Check About.com: Cats and About.com: Dogs for the latest recall updates.

Maybe you can get us a list of foods that are NOT tainted.
Thanks,
Cindy
This number of 10 confirmed deaths that is so often quoted really irks me. It makes the situation seem ‘not that bad’.
You can be certain the real death toll is in the thousands. An FDA test of this food was done in February and 7 animals died out of 40-50 test subjects. Cats were more adversely affected than dogs. The FDA puts the death rate at 1 in 6. That is an enormous amount of suffering and grief.
Its sad that our pets aren’t even safe and they rely on us to take care of them. I wonder what kinds of symptoms the pets exhibited? My grandmother buys her dogfood from SavAlot and recently one of her dogs suddenly died.
My rescue dog, an 8 year old male Kerry Blue Terrier, had been on Iams Beef Chunks in Gravy for Mature Dogs 2 months ago. He stopped eating for about 5 days and threw up. I had no idea why but decided to switch to Wellness caned food. He’s been eating now but has a kidney problem which no one related to the Iams until now.
The number of 10 deaths does not take into consideration the many animals that now have a medical problem.
my little 6 month old mini schnauzer has gotten sick from eating NOTHING BUT eukanuba “wet” bites in gravy. i noticed her increased thirst and urinating 2 days ago around 4 hours before i heard about the recall while at work. i rushed her to the vet and she is in her 2nd night of IV to try and flush her damaged kidneys. it’s not helping as of yet. Does anyone know ANY methods or treatments that can help her? i live in fairbanks, alaska and am the only case known in the state so the vet hasn’t experienced anything like it before.
I can’t believe that you are now asked to “debunk” national news items. The news items are clear, the pet foods have been recalled.
Thank you for finding the truth about all the junk email I get daily. When I get the junk mail, I usually go to your site and email the real information to the person who sent it to me. My hope is that they will use your site to find out what is true and what is not, before sending it on to their whole address book.
Thank you.
Comment for Jamison. You might want to contact a vet in one of the states to get more information on what they are doing to try to save the animals who are affected. You can also try calling the pet manufacturer to see if the know anything that might help. The pet food manufacturers might have tried to find information on what is being done to save the pets, as they dont want anymore lawsuits filed, than are already being done.
I’ve read the articles on this and find it quite scary. Recently, in South Africa, we had a similar occurrence with Woolworth’s dried pet food. Same symptoms, similar number of deaths. The thing is that this report you show says the food was tainted by gluten. The symptoms displayed, however, are consistent with the poisoning which occurred here in SA. The contaminant in this case was Ethylene Glycol, which is the main component of Anti-Freeze. This info, while it is from a whole different country, may be useful to you. The mjor effect of Ethylene Glycol poisoning is kidney failure. Perhaps your vets can look into this as well.
Products from Hill’s Pet Nutrition (Science Diet and Prescription Diet) are all ok in Canada. In the US, just avoid the “savoury cuts” gravy style cat food. That would be my best recommendation (I’m a pet nutritionist). For Hill’s their recall was entirely precautionary. Hill’s does some of the most extensive quality testing in the industry. It is also by far the best nutrition available FOR MOST PETS (please consult your veterinarian, though, as all animals are different and there is no “one size fits all” food despite claims by certain companies. I would personally avoid buying any Iams or Eukanuba products. This is not the first problem those companies have had… it is just another in a long line of problems. Even before the recall I would never have fed those products to any animal (since Proctor and Gamble bought the company). Nutritionally, they are inadequate, Iams is a grocery brand of food! (think Pedigree, Cat Chow, Ol’Roy, etc. to compare Iams to). Also, they have the worst, most unethical testing program in the industry. People keep buying those products only because they have cute commercials… but where does the money come from for those commercials? The nutrients and quality.
Another note…
For those of you switching to the “natural” diets such as Wellness, Solid Gold, Acana, raw diets, etc., PLEASE discuss with a veterinary nutritionist. Many of these foods are actually formulated for puppies/ kittens. Check the AAFCO statement… if it says anything about “all life stages” or “growth” or “lactation or gestation” do not feed it to an adult or senior animal unless specifically instructed to do so by a veterinarian. These foods can also cause kidney disease and will speed it up for those who are already suffering from the Menu Foods recall. This is such a horrible thing to happen, but I am hoping that it will make people realize how quickly poor nutrition can affect their pets’ health so they can make better choices. If you would like a free consultation to find an appropriate food for your pet, you may contact me at petnutritionist@hotmail.com. Good luck to everyone who is dealing with a sick animal. I hope that they can find an effective treatment!
To all those wondering which commercial food is totally safe for pets: check out ABADY pet food. Its the best, safest food out there. Their web sit is http://therobertabadydogfoodcoltd.com/index.html
PLEASE TELL US PRT FOODS THAT ARE NOT TAINTED AND ARE OK TO FEED MY DOG
For Jamison, My six year old Yorkie, Snooky, also started to drink and urinate a lot, He also quit eating, I noticed his change on a Saturday, three weeks ago. I took him to the vet on Monday morning. He didn’t really look sick, but was diagnosed with kidney failure. The vet gave him a very poor prognosis, but said he would try to flush his kidneys and see what happened.
After a week of IVs to flush him out I think it worked. His original BUN was over 130 (normal is
It took me trying about a hundred times to get through to the company at the number they listed on their web site and all they did was take my name and # and a little info and said they would get back to me. Wouldn’t tell me anything.
my # 13 comment got cut off. Anyway IV fluids and Lasix (a diuretic) saved Snooky. He goes back for more labs next week. So far so good.
CHECK YOUR LOCAL BIG LOTS STORE. I WAS IN ONE TODAY, 3/21 AND THE RECALLED WET CANS OF THE RECALLED PET FOODS WERE STILL FILLING THE SHELVES. LET THEM KNOW !!
My beloved cat, Sadie, died Thursday of kidney failure. She always ate the “sliced and gravy” style food from Pet Pride — yes, it’s on the list — and I am so mad that this Menu Foods Co. is impossible to reach. And, I can’t believe that there are so few animals that have died. My Sadie was one of at least two here in Monroe County, Indiana. There must be loads more! This is a horrible, horrible situation.
This infuriates me as a pet owner. I am lucky to not have a pet affected by this food but the thought of thousands of pets and their owners going through paranoia, sickness, and death is so upsetting. My prayers are with anyone affected and I wonder why the FDA, between bagged spinach and deadly pet food, seems to be falling down on the job so much lately. The government should make it a bigger priority to penalize these companies that continue to jeopardize humans and pets with their inadequate quality control. They should put more effort in prevention, as well.
Here is a website where people are reporting pet illness or death from the food recall. You can also find information here on how to treat your pet: http://www.petconnection.com/
A least one law firm has already taken action:
http://www.audetlaw.com/pet-food/
How can I find out if a cat food was or wasn’t made by Menu foods even if it isn’t on the list? I don’t trust that the list is complete and I’m very worried about feeding ANY canned food to my cats now. Nutro was supposed to be ‘high end’ but turns out it was really made by Menu Foods. Any ideas on how I can checkup on the so called ‘natural’ foods like Wellness?
Checking one of my cans I see it came from offshore.
What the hell, isn’t this what our great lier talks about whenever someone mentions how jobs are leaving our country.
With that second grade teacher style of his, he talks down to us and says ” globalisms” the wave of the future.
With a product that contains mostly grains one has to wonder why it needs to be imported into our country.
Farmers played a big part in electing this lying fool and this is just one more of his pay back to us farmers.
my 5 y old poodle got sick last tuesday
vomited and diarhera/ been eating
mighty dog CANS/ blood test showed slight elevated
kidney change but vet said too little
outside range to be worried. my dog is fine now and i have taken all my dogs and
cats off any commercial pet food since
they really do not know what is effected.
To be on the safe side, i would take
pets off all commercial food, wet or dry
until we get the whole story/ do not
take a chance
If people allow these food sto get into our dogs and cats we could lose them, I think it’s rediculous!
Iams, eukanuba, Science Diet, they are all horrible foods with by products and fillers. Try Eagle Pack, Innova, Felidae ( for cats) and Canidae for dogs. Its horrible this happened, but there are better foods out there! My heart goes out to everyone who lost a pet!
according to a news story picked up by windstream dated 3/23, the wheat was purchased from China and is contaminated with rat poison that is no longer legal in the states. it was also used in chemo therapy and for abortions. so they saved a few $.
Pet Owner DESERVE the truth. Pet owners have been misled for too long about mass manufactured pet food. All pet foods are not alike, but “how do we tell the difference you ask?” I CHALLENGE all pet owners to view a video on my website that gives great detail about the manufacturing processes of pet food, go to http://www.pamperedpetzone.com If the product you are using does not offer any manufacturing information or is not AAFCO and APHIS certified find something different. Good luck!
We’ve always bought our dog’s food at the health food stores. No problems.

I am scared that she may be sick now! When I woke up this morning she just layed around, after she got up she thew up 6 times. She has been eating more and drinking a little bit more water but not ALOT
I needed to know how long it could take for her to get sick and how much she had to eat to get sick. Does anyone have ANY answers for me if I lost my dog it would be like loosing my child!

LAST MONTH MY CAT KIKI ALSO SHOWED THE SAME SYMPTOMS OF ILLNESS FROM EATING THE CONTAMINATED FOOD AND DIED WITHIN ONE WEEK. SEVERAL OF MY FRIENDS HAVE HAD THIER BELOVED ANIMALS GET SICK AND OR DIE. I HAVE RECENTLY HEARD THAT FEEDING YOUR PETS ANY OF THE NEARLY 50 BRANDS OF FOOD MANUFACTURED BY THE HORRIBLE COMPANY MENU FOODS OWNED BY THE CORP. PROCTOR & GAMBLE IS STILL UNSAFE (BE IT WET OR DRY FOOD) I SUGGEST FOR ALL OF YOU THAT LOVE YOUR PETS AND DO NOT WANT THEM TO GET SICK AND DIE TO BOYCOTT THESE COMPANIES AND FEED THEM SAFE FOOD…I WAS DEVASTED WHEN MY SWEET CAT DIED…FOR MORE INFO ON THIS SUBJECT, LOOK AT http://www.iamscruelty.com
There is not 10 or 20 dead it is more like 250 confirmed. Also not all foods are listed that should be. Also some are still today on shelves. This has been now going on a month and just this month the media stations post so little. http://www.ZolaEnterprises.com put an alert on it. I put the link as my url. Look at the alerts it is very spooky.
I’ve been studying dog for for years. Nothing at the vets or grocery store is safe or good. Stay away from the big name companies. You need to pick a brand that says these things: HUMAN GRADE INGREDIENTS, ORGANIC if possible, NO PRESERVATIVES, NO ANTIBIOTICS/HORMONES, GMO FREE and NO WHEAT/CORN or SOY – the three top allergans of dogs. Most vets don’t study nutrition, they get their education from the big name companies. That’s criminal, as you can see by the latest scandal. Not the first, not the last. Find a natural pet food store in your area that will help you pick out a food with these parameters. All the foods that don’t meet those conditions I listed are taxing the dog’s system/organs/immune system on a daily basis.
Hello
I had a 14 yr old cat to die, she was
having tooth problem so I put her on the
Iams can food because it was easier for her to eat but then she stopped eating that and I had to put her to sleep due to kidney failure
On Jan. 18th my cat ” G. Michael ” was
diagnosed with diabetes. I took him to
the vet who prescribed insulin to be
given to him twice a day…….The vet
also said to feed him IAMS Kitten Food..
..Which I did. I took ” G ” back to the
vet for a scheduled checkup on Mar.16th.
…..The vet said to increase the
Insulin….During that weekend
G.Michael became more and more finicky,
refusing to eat his food……He started
to walk with a visible stiffness in his
hind legs…..during the week he would
only sniff at the milk and water I had
put in front of him…eventually not
drinking any at all…On Friday,Mar.23rd
I brought him back to the vet….He had
gone into kidney failure and I had him
put to sleep !! Heidi……
Also, beware of people using this tragedy to promote their own products..pretty pathetic huh?
See comment number 27
This is what happens when heartless, money hungry companies deceive us into thinking their foods are safe..and no, the FDA doesn’t oversee this..apparently NOONE is responsible for regulating the industry. PATHETIC
This video will rip your heart out, and the fact this was totally preventable is just HORRIBLE.
Well, I will keep it short, our family dog who was in great shape a few weeks ago ate this tainted crap and is now dead. The Vet said organ failure and that was about it. I know these huge companies only care about money but my kids just cared about their loving dog.
In response to recent posts. I understand that the video is shocking. The sad thing is, these pet deaths could have been prevented. Our company did not make the video to capitalize from this tragety, the video was made long ago to show pet lovers that they have a choice, and that there are companies that care about their pets.

Now pets are dying, but real truth they have been suffering for years. My dog had severe allergies, losing hair, bad skin smell, ear fungus. Dry dog food all her life. 3 different vets. meds, no help.Tried holistic vet, raw foods, fish oil,WOW-new dog!
does anyone know if cd and id science diet foods are okay>My cat has a urinary diet and cant just eat other food-am terrified about this-are all dry and canned foods affected?/How does menu foods have so many brands>they are murderers-someone please help me
I would like to know if any one has even thought about the humans that could have died from this! Even in the Good Ole USA we have poor and homeless people eating pet food!!! I am an animal lover, I have 10 cats to prove it but we may need to look a little deeper, of course they are just societies nuisances !!!!
Keep an eye on petconnection.com. DRY FOODS ARE STARTING TO BE RECALLED. HILL’S / SCIENCE DIET ARE RECALLING DRY KIBBLE CAT FOOD. LOOK, PEOPLE. READ! ASK QUESTIONS! SEARCH FOR AND DEMAND ANSWERS! If these poor saps had read the foods labels in the first place, instead of trusting the TV commercials, this would not be so bad. Family and friends of mine have lost pets. I hate to see this all happening, but you have to take some responsibility for not questioning what exactly was in that can of chunky stinky food you feed your pet.
Buy your pet food at a REAL pet store, not the grocery store or the corporate pet stores that are the same money grubbers as the pet food makers.
I feed my 11 yr old Collie Iams Active Maturity dry dog food. Have there been any recalls on this?
Maybe the key to containing this type of problem is to stop looking at making “fat cats” rich and using suppliers from the “good ‘ole” USA. We are destroying our economy by all of the outsourcing and now we are killing our pets! What next!! Sure it costs more to purchase locally and have to pay a US citizen an honest wage but I’m guessing the “top dogs” can afford to lose a little money and still keep their yachts.
WE’RE IN THE LARGEST WHEAT GROWING NATION IN THE WORLD & THEY HAD TO IMPORT FROM CHINA TO IMPROVE THEIR PROFIT MARGIN? I THINK THEIR LOSS WILL SHOW HOW STUPID THAT WAS.
I have read many of the mail from you, and I too ask the question of “why don’t they tell us what is safe”. I’m so sorry for the loss to all of you.WHY ARE WE BUYING WHEAT FROM CHINA!! JUST ONE MORE THING THAT JEOPARDIZES OUR SAFETY BY GOING ELSEWHERE TO SAVE A BUCK!!!
Why don’t you tell people how they can sell a 40lb. bag of food for $9.99. The melamine or plastic that is part of the problem comes from our former, or deceased furry little friends. Pet food companies buy them from area pounds and shelters and grind them up bag and all. You really think they would pay someone to remove them from the bag? Look in the ingredient list on cheap pet food bags, and that’s what “animal meal” or “meal” is!
My blue heeler, Cash, died yesterday. He ate Alpo Prime Cuts w/ Gravy, I dug the cans out of the trash and they were the bad ones.
I cant even believe this. This morning while watching the news they said EVEN MORE cans are tainted..we are taking my dogs to the vet today, I am sick to my stomach just w/fear
As an owner of 2 english springer spaniels, who are our kids, it is extremely madening to hear about things like this. One of our dogs was fine last night but this morning she sick. we have them both on vet perscribed food that is suppose to be safe but with the ever expanding list this food may have been contaminated also.
The pet food companies as stated earlier in the newa switched to a NEW SUPPLIER, which obviously means a cheaper supplier. Low and behold this supplier is from CHINA what else would you expect. A country that for the most part has very little health and safety regulation on anything including food production. Our governments under no circumstances should accept any food product from this country wwether it be for pet food our human consumption. cheaper does not mean better. this is true now.
my cat is deadShe was given a packet of moist food contained in a n 18 pound bag of friskies chefs blend cat food when she got sick, it was bad and we took her to the vet who tried to save her but to no avial she still died she laaayed in my arms with labored breathing , urinateing bright yellwo, yellow eyes, yellow ears, sh4e could not walk, she meowing in pain. the cat food company wll not reply what now, a vet bill over three hundred, a dead cat
My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you. Our dauschund eats Chicken Soup for the Dog lovers soul. We switched him to this from NutroMax at the recommendation of our vet, who said Nutro dog food use to be a good dog food but no longer was. This was about 6 months ago. I thank God and our vet for us switching.
I have fed my puppy the Prime cuts by alpo. I have dug the cans out of the trash & the plant code is different. Was the recall on all food or just the food with the 1159 plant#?
I am so sorry for all who have lost pets or have sick pets. I plan to start making my own dog and cat food. Does anyone know of a good book on homemade pet food?
I recently noticed wheat gluten as an ingredient in Wegman’s croutons. Is it safe to eat products containing the gluten?
Wheat Gluten does appear to be related ot the recent spate of problems. I know Hill’s Pet Nutrition recalled everything it had with that item in it. That is only 1% of their products. It is only in savory cuts for cats and Prescription Diet M/D dry. None of the other products have it (you can call them and ask). They also have not recalled, nor use Wheat Gluten in, any dog food. They went and pulled all of the bad prduct from pet stores and vet offices, and as their employees do all the deliveries for the company except for Petsmart and Petco, i would feel like they are very safe to buy. Organics are safe too, so for the short term, that is a possibility, but they are not forumalated very well for optimal health…
I also saw someone say Nutro is just like everything else because it was made at menu. That is not ture. They still used their recipe, ingrediants and what not. They just used the equipment at menu to create the pet food, it is not at all like what is in grocery store brands (like most premium foods, its A LOT better in quality)
Good luck to all effected. Don’t completely freak out, manufacturers are being prety clear on their website as to what is effected and I would say buy your pet food from a real pet store or a Vet, they really do tend to sell better stuff.
Thanks for all the information on the article and thanks to leigh I found the safe food link. I also emailed them and the site owner sent me many recipes. She said she is adding more to the page but emailed them ahead of time. My dog is very happy with the new food.
She was mad about google putting pay things up to buy pet food ideas off her page and sounded like she is going to do all this free for everyone. I am so happy that someone is helping. I was so scared to feed my dog anything. Thank you for posting the link leigh. I do not know if you saw the page they started at http://www.zolaenterprises.com/safepetfoods.htm but, that ws the one I went to. I hope that helps everyone as it did me. Just email them off the link on the other pages and they may get yours emailed ahead too.
Tanja
my mother has 2 rat terrier fiest that are 7 months, she has been feeding them iams wet food in the pouches and mighty dog in the can, saturday the 31st of march the puppies just got sick, started throwing up, she has taken them for treatment. my heart goes out to everyone, that is experience this, cause as a pet owner myself, i am concerned.
I’ve been trying to call Purina ever since my dog got sick 2 weeks ago and all I have gotten is the run around. I called Menu foods and their telling me that I need to take it up with the manufacture of the tainted food I bought. So I called Purina back and they said I can file a complaint, and that someone would call me back within 24 hours. Well it’s been 4 days.
I took my dog to the vet and she was diagnosed with “abnormal levels of calcium” in her kidneys that have been associated with this kind of poisoning. She is now on 3 different pills to help balance things out and help to bring the levels down. I need to bring her back to the vet in 6 weeks for more blood work.
This is the real kick in the teeth. When I did speak with a “rep” from Purina, they said to feed her Alpo since its Ok and not on the list. Well guess what, Alpo is now being recalled and I have 3 cans of the tainted food sitting on my shelf.
I’m done with dog and cat food. I’ll be making my own food from here on out.
What’s next, our food!
I get nervous everytime I feed my cats. I’m reading labels and not buying anything with wheat gluten. I lost one cat in Jan with kidney failure. She was 17, I then lost another cat 2nd week of March, kidney failure, he was also 17, kidney failure. I had him put down 2 days before the recall was announced. Now I’m wondering if I fed them both contaminated food. I know at one point I did give them small cans of Iams, but usually they would eat Science Diet Dry (not prescription) and friskies can food, the meat/gravy variety. It’s too late now, I can’t go back. They were both privately cremated and my heart is broken. I still have 2 cats (younger)but continue to worry about everything I feed them.
Our neighbor thought his ex came to his house in the night and threw a piece of meat with rat poison in it, under the deck. He found out later that HE had poisoned his dog with the contaminated dog food. The big black lab lived after spending two days at the vet’s. Dee
To #9 Christine, the “pet nutritionist”: Using this disaster to air your opinion on Iams/Eukanuba is so unfair. Read the ingredients and tell me what is so much better about Hill or any other pet food? They (commercial foods) all contain chemicals, all contain scrap meats. Have you worked at Iams to know their testing is the worst? Aren’t you really using this forum to get your website out there for the poor pet owners to shop at? I have 2 shitz tzus, both suffering from kidney damage from this fiasco. They will go back to the ways of generations of successful farmers and live as we do. Ever see a farm dog on canned food? Or even dog food? I’m not saying to feed your pets fast food, but feed them smart. Wish I had sooner.
I read one of your e-mails giving high endorsement to Hills Science Diet and how they only had to re-call onemeasely type of food. She is soooo wrong! My kitten haD THE RE-CALLED KITTEN FOOD; ( WHICH, IT BEING ONE OF HER FAVORITES, i NOTICED WHEN IT WAS ABSENT FROM THE SHELF FOR SEVERAL (sorry abt. caps.) mnths, and the e-call started about one to two months after it was back on store shelves. They then announced all of their other food was safe, especially the special diet foods. I have a diabetic cat who WAS on M/D dry, and moist. The dry is nw being re-called. This sounds to me like terrorism because a good way to debilitate a large part of the population here (and other country’s i’m sure) is to kill or maim our children who are genetically different, or may have 4 feet istea of to. Anyway, you et it. I am with the one post. I want a listing (besides Royal Canin or Purina) of all foods that are healthy. What if it was pablum?
To #63 Nanette. You are so wise to switch your dogs to real food. We wouldn’t eat scrap meat from the floor, why should our pets. My 2 shitz tzus are suffering from bad kidneys as well from my canned food stupidity. I used it to flavor their kibble because they turned up their nose. They are so much smarter than us. If I was fed kibble, I’d turn up my nose too. Cheers to you for changing your dogs diets. Our vet agrees with their new diet consisting of veggies, breads, and protein foods with some fruits thrown in for excitement. No lasik or dialysis was done on our two, just a good nutritional diet and their toxic levels are lower. The adult dog is now fine and the pup is on her way. Their weight is in check as well.
For an all nautural hollistic pet food that contains NO wheat gluten, NO corn, (both known allergens for dogs & cats) NO fillers, NO chemicals and NO preservatives check out Life’s Abundance at http://www.pamperedpetzone.com This is not a shameless plug to sell pet food, it is my plea to you, from one pet owner to another, to switch to a pet food company that has only the wellfare of pets in mind. I won’t feed my pets anything else! ALSO Check out the video on my site to see how most mass manufactured pet food is made, it will open your eyes to these money hungry companies that killed all of our beloved pets!
It amazes me how Americans are becoming so infatuated with Socialism and Socialist Medicaid (Medical) here in American.
Yes, it is cheaper but look at the results. I have often heard it said, “By those from Canada that the doctors are so far away from where they live and some die just because they cannot afford to go to the doctors.”
Now animals are dying and people may be next. Probably what is happening is the ground up fillers that are being placed in foods today. You never know what may be ground up and put in foods for MONEY ($$$).
Best wishes to all.
My dog Lou, died on 09/11/2006. My husband swore the poor little guy had been poisoned. I am feeling quite upset about this whole pet food ordeal and was wondering if I was the one who killed my dog by insisting he eat dog food???????
Sadly in these days something as this doesn’t suprise anyone anymore. It wouldn’t suprise me if something like this on a large scale were to happen to human food. I used to have a personal policy of not eating food manufactured overseas, however, with how our government handles catastrophies such as the pet food am I really to feel any safer consuming domestic produced goods? As far as imports are concerned it wouldn’t suprise me if bioterrorism were to be shipped to us at some point….perhaps in the form of clothing purchased at Walmart from China as a potential example. Hey didn’t we do something like that to the Indians at some point?
I would like to know if it is only the wet cat food that has been found to contain the poison, I have only feed ny cat Happy Trails dryed cat food for the past 2 years, I dont know that happened but my cat got realy sick & died. I was not aware of the recall on cat food. I need to know if this is one of the brand that is on the recall list it is manufactured by Alberton foods.

…and everyone made fun of me for feeding my dog “people” food like chicken, beef and rice. The only other alternative was Pedigree because of their commercials.
HELP! I DEVELOPED SAME SIMPTOMS AS HTIS A WEEK AGO, I DIDNT MAKE ANY OF IT I THOUGH WAS SOMEKIND OF BUG, SUDDENLY MY WHOLE HOUSEHOLD HAVE THE SAME, IS ALL THESE SIMPTOMS AND LAS 4 TO 5 DAYS, KIDNES AND ALL, I WONDER IF WE GOT SOME OF THE SAME THING IN SOME OF OUR FOOD IN A SMALLER AMOUNT, IT IS STRANGE, WE DID HAVE EXACTLY SAME SIMPTOMS, AS WE WERE POISON AND A LOT OF KIDNEY PAIN LIKE YOU ARE PASSING A KIDNEY STONE, VOMITS,DIARHEA LOTS OF PAIN, DISSINES AND LETHARGIC, CAN SOME ONE TELL ME IF THEY HAD HEAR ON ANYTHING LIKE IT IN HUMAN FOOD?
CAN SOMEBODY TELL ME IF THEY HAD FOUND ANY INFO ON THIS SAME CHEMICAL IN HUMAN FOOD? I DEVELOPED THESE SAME EXACT SIMPTOMS A WEEK AGO, AND ONE BY ONE IN MY HOUSEHOLD EVERYONE HAS DEVELOPED THEM, MY SON WAS HOSPITALISED WITH KIDNEY STONE LIKE PAINS AND WE ALL SHARE SAME EXACT SIMPTOMS AS THE DOGS DID, HOW? IT IS POSIBLE SAME POISON IN SOME HUMAN FOOD IN SMALLER AMOUNT BE THE CAUSE? IT IS A VERY STRANGE THING AT FIRST WE THOUGHT WAS JUST A BUG, BUT IS SO BAD AND PAINFUL AND WEIRD IT LAST A FEW DAYS , NOT LIKE A STOMACH FLU MORE LIKE POISON, BUT WE DIDNT GOT IT AT SAME TIME, JUST LIKE A DOMINO EFFECT I WONDER IF HOSPITALS ARE SEEING THIS INCREASE IN THE EMERGENCY ROOM.
It’s strange that this was just recently detected. My cat died in late November 2006. Same exact symptoms, and what do you know, it was the same food that is being recalled…
i LOST MY BEST PAL PEBBLES IN MARCH 2007
SHE WAS MY HEART AND IT MAKES ME ANGRY THAT I UNKNOWING HELP KILL MY OWN PET SHE LOVED PEDIGREE POUNCHES AND LITTLE CHAMPION POUCHES I HAD TO PUT HER TO SLEEP AND HAVE HER CREMATED THAN I HEARD ABOUT THE FOOD RECALL AND IT MADE ME SICK TO SOME ITS NO BIG DEAL THEIR ONLY ANIMALS BUT SHE WAS MY HEART AND I STILL CRY OF HER LOSS TODAY SHE WAS VERY SPECIAL AND SO HUMAN LIKE IN HER ACTIONS I HATE CORPORATE GREED
My heart goes out to all of you who lost pets.I haven’t had any problems thank heavens…have been feeding my two cats (babies) 9 Lives ground wet varieties.
They don’t seem to like cuts, morsels, shredded types etc.
After just hearing about recalls again, I jumped online to try and get some updates/info. and came across these posts. It has now made me VERY scared and I am going to check the ingredients right NOW.
Scary Moment in Milford Maine. We have been feeding our two adult dogs the Alpo prime slices in gravy which is not part of the purina recall. Two weeks ago after a routine bllod test for one of my dogs his test came back with elevated Kidney numbers. We immediately stopped feeding them the food and have switched to organic foods both wet and dry. We returned the remaining food with no problems and await a response from purina pet foods. I am now seriously doubting the safety of any of this commercial pet food and have started cooking them rice, peas and chicken. We are taking our beloved brice back to the vets next week for another blood test, we will inform you of the results.
For most people, vets generally recommend against feeding a diet of human food to pets. Pets eating the same variety of foods consumed by their healthy human owners run the risk of a whole separate set of problems such as pancreatitis. Follow the link on my name above to see five simple steps regarding the pet food recall. These are from the veterinarians here in Galax, VA.
Spoke over the weekend with a former salesman for feed. Said he worked for a major company when PCB happened & that this is the same thing! He also said he suspects this is larger than they are admitting. Have been feeding my dogs Lamb & Rice NutroChoice kibble & can since puppies. Up to $1.35 per can. Its been recalled too or at least is on list…
(the canned). Now ask yourself why would I be paying $1.35 can for wheat gluten if I am using Lamb & Rice? So far everyone seems okay….I am just giving them dry now & intend to start cooking ground beef & rice or chicjen & rice for them.
Natural means that things are found in nature! What on earth is natural about kibble? If it was so natural they wouldn’t need to fill it with flavourings and preservatives. The three biggest allergens for dogs and cats are corn, wheat and soy; no wonder our pets are always sick. Wheat gluten is touted as protein, what ever happened to feeding meat as protein. The pet food industry was developed to use up the sweepings off the floor of human food manufacturers! When is everyone going to get it through their heads that this crap is poisoning our beloved fourlegged fur kids?
Don’t kid yourselves, the foods that are made in these factories use all the same raw materials. The factory is not going to order special for some brands. So if the foods are made using the same ingredients, equipment and people what is the difference between the cheapest and the most expensive food? NOTHING!!!! People do your animals a favor, feed them real food. Anything is better than kibble, whether it’s table scraps or raw food. Don’t put your fur kids at risk.
Barbara
I just heard something about dried chicken jerky treats being re-called. Anyone know anything about that?
Vicki, thank you for finally bringing HealthyPetNet in to the forefront! I am a long-time client of HealthyPetNet food and due to the recent recall and all of its implications, I am sooo glad that I am! In my opinion, everyone should visit http://www.pamperedpetzone.com it is a great site full of useful information. Thanks again Vicki!
The recall has been expanded to include treats as well, and some dry food.
1 of our 3 dogs died mysteriously as if poisoned. Warning: none of our dog food is currently on a recall list! Suggest buying only locally manufactured dog food.
I’m so sorry to here about all the pets that have died. I would be devestated if anything happened to my cat. I’m glad to see that vicki has mentioned the Life’s Abundance pet food. I have been using it for about 8 months and am really happy wit it. My cat loves it and I like the fact they never use Wheat Gluten, Presevatives, Corn (a known pet alergen)or any bi-products. I also like the household products they’re all pet friendly too. Anyyone who hasen’t seen the video on her site http://www.pamperedpetzone.com should check it out. It’s unbelievable!!

AUSSIES BEWARE OF BONNY DOG KIBBLE MADE MY PURINA… My ‘Service/assistance’ dog, Bob was put to sleep in my arms last night after a 2 week battle against kidney failure. I am devastated! He was only 7. My old bitch, 14, might live, only more time on IV’s will tell. They have only been fed on BONNY LITE KIBBLE made by PURINA. So all Aussies who use BONNY BEWARE. Yes, it has wheat gluten ingreadients. AND IS NOT ON THE REACALL LIST. My heart goes out to everyone else who has gone through this, or is going through it. I feel for you all. I will never recover from doing this to my big boy and little girl.
This is WAY more than an accidental thing. It is deliberate. Most likely HUMAN food is also tainted. Our gov won’t tell us the truth because of all the MONEY that would be LOST… spent on health care…plus all the companies (manufacturers, suppliers and retailers) that would lose soooooo much money. AND we would DEMAND justice. So they say nothing and keep it quiet…as if it is no big deal. Bunch of crap.
I have found wheat gluten listed as an ingredient in some of the Friskies and Fancy Feast canned cat food that I feed my cat. They are NOT on the recall list. Are these foods safe or not? Are Purina dry foods safe? We use that but have found wheat gluten in another dry food that we have used, called Good Times. I’m worried.
MY CAT, THAT WAS 10 YEARS OLD DIED IN MARCH 07 BECAUSE I HAD TO GO AND BUY SOME CHEAP FOOD, AS I WAS LOW ON CASH, I FEEL 100 % GUILTY AND IT’S NOT ME BUT THE MANUFACTURERS, THAT ARE RESPONSIBLE, I MISS THAT CAT SO MUCH. AND TO KNOW NOTHING WILL BE DONE ABOUT HIS UNTIMELY DEATH, A MEMEBER OF MY FAMILY!IS REPREHENSIBLE, THESE PEOPLE SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE AND I’LL DO THE BEST I CAN TO BRING THIS TO JUSTICE, THEY AREN’T PROPLERTY BUT A PART OF OUR FAMILIES… SOMEONE HAVE COMPASSION, IF U DON’T U SHALL BURN! aND I’LL BE THE ONE TO DO IT TO U !dONT GET IT TWISTED !
Linda,
I have been begging people to visit my web site for a detailed video of what is really in our pet’s food. WHEAT,CORN AND SOY (in any capacity) have no nutritional value to our pets. They are used as a protein filler because they are cheap! They are very hard for our animals to digest and are also know alergens. If anybody out there is still confused as to what does and doesn’t belong in our pet’s food please watch the video. http://www.pamperedpetzone.com
We as consumers have been misled by clever marketing tactics and fancy wording for too long. WE DESERVE THE TRUTH. This tragedy could have been prevented if these pet food companies were more concerned with the health of our pets than the bottom dollar. This is a wake-up call for us as pet parents to demand more from these greedy companies.
Please look at the video.
Sincerely,
Your Fellow Pet Parent
Vicki
To #94 – Vicki,
Thanks for the info on pet food for my sweet cat at http://www.pamperedpetzone.com. The recalls keep popping up and now I don’t have to keep checking on the food I am feeding him. I encourage everyone to check out Vicki’s site http://www.pamperedpetzone.com – Thank you.
All commercial grade dog food is an unhealthy choice for your pet. What did dogs and cats eat years ago before commercial foods made its way? Scraps, mainly table scraps. Dogs and cats are scavengers, when is the last time you saw your pet standing on line at Subway looking for a hero? They don’t normally eat wheat or corn, especially soy. Unfortunately so many of us had bought into the big lie. Several years ago I starting making my own dog food out of our leftovers. I supplement it with Missing Link. 2 of my dogs ate processed foods since I got them from the pound, but my 3rd dog who I had since a puppy only ate what I made for him. He is so healthy with a great coat and lots of energy. Don’t buy into the big lie anymore. Also how about all the people who got suckered into thinking they were buying a better brand of dog food and paying much more for it to see that it was the same as store brands. Remember folks it is all about GREED. And everyone should be scared about our food supply as well. I won’t go there, but if its in a box- I don’t buy it.
I wouldn’t trust any food made by Menu Foods or any food that contains wheat gluten. I read somewhere that another company bought the tainted wheat gluten, but was staying confidential. That scares me becase we had been feeding our cats Friskies canned and Special Kitty dry and I have read where that has killed cats. I have done a lot of research and found out that FIRST OF ALL there are not just 15 cats that have died, it is more in the thousands of both cats and dogs that have died. The fifteen reported cats were just menu foods test cats. They are trying to make this look more small scale than it is.
WHAT TO FEED ANIMALS?
1. homemade food
in fact you can get great recipes all over the internet
here is a link to a book with 100 cat food recipes. You just go to the link and then click on download for free with file factory basic
http://www.filefactory.com/file/d0fec3/
you may have to cut and paste the link in your browser
2. Natural Balance or another brand that isn’t made by Menu Foods and doesn’t contain wheat gluten. You can get Natural Balance at petco online or petco stores.
Lots of people think they are safe because their food wasn’t recalled but I have read reports all over the net where cats and dogs have died from foods that weren’t recalled that contained wheat gluten.
My Parents Yorkie became ill on Easter Sunday. We came home from church and Casey(Yorkie) had became ill. He had diarrhea with lots of blood, no appetite, and was throwing-up mucus and blood. Today Tuesday he is on IV’s but the vet called and doesn’t think he is going to make it. Casey’s dog food is OK but received an Ol’Roy biscuit at a bank drive through on Sat. He was only given half of the biscuit. Say a prayer for our pet and please don’t accept biscuits at the Bank!!!!
I feed my dog Nutro Natural Choice Training Bits. With the recall going on I thought I would check the Ingredients of the product. I found that this product has Wheat Gluten in it. So I check the Nutro Web page and found the the list of Ingredients listed on Nutro web page are all different than on the label I have. It looks like they have changed the listing on line.
Thank You,
Gene McHenry
I do not promote any particular brand of food, but I do think that IAMS is a horrible brand because of the abuse of animals revealed by PETA undercover workers in their testing facilities.
Barbara – don’t worry that you accidentally killed your cats – most cats who live to those kinds of ages will have some kidney failure. Kidney failure in older animals is so common that it will be hard for people to prove causation unless the veterinarians were able to collect urine samples (or kidney tissue from biopsy or necropsy) showing the contaminants.
I’ve read a lot of comments and have decided to go to a health food store for pets. I think one brand is good then I see it on a recall list. I lost my persian cat in Feb to cancer in the stomach and intestine…I wonder if the cat food had anything to do with this. Not knowing, I will defintly look at natural foods for aniamals. These food companies had to have kown about this, and they tore alot of hearts out for thier hush hush profit. We need to grow american, work american and buy american, even if we have to pay more, it will for americans. This can be a beginning the control we need for safety of products sold here in the U.S.A.
about a month ago my 12 yr. old lab mixed
dog
Cody, was not himself. Stopped eating
thirsty, unusually quiet. After a day
or two I noticed he was lethargic and
seemed to have more eye goup. Took to
my vet and after blood test, it turned
out to be pancreatis.
The timing still made me suspicious.
Now my dog is on Hill’s Science Diet
(prescription) which I obtained from
vet. I sometimes mix a little Pedigree
canned food on top but all of this
recall info has made me wary. Dog is
fine now but at the time he stopped
eating I took him into get an I.V
because he stopped eating for five
days. My dog had had some fatty corned beef prior to the pancreatits. My vet
suggested he was to old to be fed
any type of human food as his pancreas
wasnt’ dealing with it well. My heart
goes out to all the families dealing
with their sick pets. I still believe
we should demand accountability from
these money hungry corporations selling
us tainted pet foods
I just recently found a website where those who has suffered horrible losses or experiences with there pets due to the recent pet food recall are posting their stories. It is a great way for people to vent their problems, tell their stories and even post pictures of their pets. The food companies are NOT taking any responsibilty for this horrific nightmare we are all going through and maybe this website can make a difference. They forget, pets are a part of are family too. We need to hold them accountable.
Go to http://www.petfoodnightmares.com to share your Thoughts.
The Senate will conduct an oversight hearing to look into this matter. The hearing is scheduled for 2 pm (EST) tomorrow (4/12). Visit http://appropriations.senate.gov/ to watch a live webcast.
WHY DOES THIS COUNTRY DEPENDS ON PET FOODS THAT ARE MANUFACTURED IN CHINA AND ANY OTHER PLACE BESIDES IN THE US, SOMETHING IS WRONG HERE, I WOULDENT TRUST CHINA WITH ANYTHING, LESS PET FOOD, NOONE REALY KNOWS WHATS IN IT, ANYTHING CAN BE WRITTEN ON THE LABEL,, THE us should manufacture our pet food , no one else, this is outrages to find out that this poison pet food was manufactiured in china,
I just have a question i had to put my cat to sleep back in march. She had been eating that food for atleast 5 years now. We had hundreds of the contaminated packages. What is the company doing to the familys that had to put their pets to sleep due to this?
I agree with comment number 35. I took a look at it and was thinking the same thing.
Christine, look at comments #94 & 95 I went to that site back in March when it was first mentioned. They represent Life’s Abundance. I tried the food since it has none of the ingredients you are talking about. My dog Spike really loves it, and they have treats too that didn’t have any of the harmful wheat and stuff in it. Treats are hard to find right now. The rep there was very knowledgeable and helpful and it seemed like she was genuine about helping me. It is confusing to me to keep checking labels and ingredients. She helped me do that and to understand them a little better. I much prefer to spend my money with someone who cares than with the greedy companies that put garbage in their food and sell it as premium stuff. Even better, it was less expensive than some of the store stuff I looked at. Take a look and see what you think.

Can please someone tell me if Friskeys dry food is okay for cats? Has any dry cat food been affected? Is this nightmare over?
just wanted to let you consumers out there know that just because your pet’s food is not on the list of recalled pet food, does not mean that it is not tainted. I just had to euthanize and cremate my beloved cat that i had for 12 years. He was my best friend. He would sleep with my everynight and was there to greet me when i came home from work. He was always by my side and never left it. Well about two weeks ago I noticed that he was not himself. I had fed him Fancy Feast from Purina Foods for 12 years since he was a kitten. I noticed that he was throwing up a lot and he had always been thin but noticed that he was losing weight gradually over the last two weeks. But in the last three days, he got increasingly worse. Found him on Friday April 13, 2007 slumped over his water bowl when I got home. He could not get up. Could not lift his head and when he two or three steps, he would fall over like a lump and was crying the most horrible cries I have every heard. He had never been sick a day in his life. took him to the vet and the vet stated that he had almost complete kidney failure that quickly it happened. The doctor said to try antibiotics and special food but he does not think that will help him. I did tried to force feed him and give him fluids as he had no eaten anything in three days. He justed wanted to hover over the water bowl for water. By saturday night he was twice as bad as the day before. It was horrible to have to sit and watch my cat not be able to take two steps without falling over or lift his head and just lay there. Even though he was so sick, he still knew me and tried to get up and come to me but was unable to do so. I just held him and the next day i new the end was near when he was laying there not hardly able to breathe. I then had to do what I dreaded take him to my local humane shelter and have him put to sleep and cremated. I did not want to put him in the cold ground cause he was part of my family. I Will bring his ashes home. Don’t trust the pet companies
Lori, I am so sorry! Thank you for telling your story… I think this nightmare is long from over and I am amazed at how little attention it is getting in the media. I just can’t figure out why, the official death toll for our beloved companion animals is still under 20 when we hear these stories over and over, Did I miss something?
I lost my dog 3-13 07 he was gonna be 2 onthe 23rd…any way so very sorry for all your suffering…I can say I know it well……check out this website it will give you advice , share your stoy this book has hundreds of our babies lost to POISONED food….My story is ( CHACHEE’ story)
http;//www.audetlaw.com/
http;//www.audet.com/petstories/guestbook.phb
hope this helps…..it helps me a lot….my prayers are with you all and your pets…keep fighting…
My husband and I are now buying a food through WalMart that has no wheat or corn gluten in it… my elsest cat at 6 years ols, has been on the brink of death for the last two weeks in and out of the hospital, on meds, on iv’s its taken every last bit of our savings to save his life but he’s a member of our family, our of 3 cats we have had 2 at teh vet sick , out of two dogs we have had one at the vet sick…. I think the advise of even if you animals food is not on the recall list doesnt mean its not tainted, if you look even Friskies wet and dry which my cats were eating are made buy menu foods which began the first recal and our dog food pedigree which is made by nestle and that company was part of the second recall all have wheat gluten in them,,, go for the natural stuff, purina one is all natural look on the back of everything before you feed you pets these foods, these companies cannot guarantee that the wheat gluten they put in one product didnt taint another they are all just different labels on the same foods. Better safe than sorry, I wouldnt want anyone to go through what we as a family and my children have had to go through over the last couple of weeks,. ALL my best to all pet owners out there.
I feed my animals Back To Basics. It is all natural. Never part of any recall. Check out the web site. http://www.beowulfs.com Give them a call and get a free sample. Let save our pets. What a terrible world we live in. Also can reach this US Company at 1-800-219-2558. You will see results. The best that is out there for your pet. USDA Approved. No fillers, by-products. Just all natural. Thanks.
We have two dogs. On has eaten Nutro (dry)his entire life. the other is just a puppy and is starting on Nutro (dry) does anybody know if the Nutro dry food is ok???
My cat started to get sick in December and had to be put to sleep March 15 (the exact time frame of these pet food deaths) – he ate hill science diet cd minced prescription food (canned and dry). Its not on the list, but I strongly suspect it is the cause. My doctor told me he had kidney disease along with heart failure, and this was a cat who had all his bloodwork etc. done every summer, including summer of 06. He was a healthy cat, and all his siblings, not on that food, are still alive and well. I am writing this to maybe help one of my beloved David’s fellow cats.
Cindy you are so right. yes they should tell us what is safe for our pets. I already lost 1 and i have another 1 that is sick. I did change foods. I think it is the treats…ole roy milk bones. they say the small one and large ones are one the list…but dont say anything about medium ones. that is what i was using ..not anymore. why arent all of them on the list?
Try one of the holistic / natural brands. They are rarely advertised, as they put their money into development.
One brand, VeRUS (http://www.veruspetfoods.com/ ), also only uses human grade ingredents, which, to me, screams “safe”.
My 3yr old male boxer suffered also. He had some liver and kidney problems. Vet didnt know wut from but told me to get rid of all bones, food and treats. I switched my dogs food to purina brand.
My cat is only 5 years old and was diagnosed with Kidney Failure Stage 3. She eats Science Diet and ate the Science Diet that was on the list. I Have several of the used cans still but feel helpless. She was diagnosed the 3rd week in January. She had her normal vet appointment in July 2006. No signs of Kidney failure. Now she goes to the Vet once a week for fluids and is on KD which is special food and medicine. I have called several people to inquire about what we CAN feed our animals not what we can’t because the list is growing by the minute.
Just feeling very helpless and frustrated.
I breed Dobermans and one of my 8yr old female Doberman got sick on February 24, 2007, she was in good health until then, when i took her to the Vet because she won’t eat or drink. they kept her for three days and two nights when i picked her up on the 26 they told me she had kidney failure and for me to take her to another Vet in Brunswick, GA for a ultrasound, that Vet could see anything like a blockage or cancer. I have feed my dogs the O’Roy dry and wet dog foods for years the Vet also told me that it wasn’t the dog food that gave her kidney failure so you tell me was it. My wonderful Doberman passed away March 15, 2007. She was a very good dog and my kids and I miss her so much. I still have 3 dogs, one is a Doberman and the other two are Jack Russells and i’m scared to feed them because I don’t know which dry dog food is good.
I would like to know how long, this has been going on? I had a dog that die last august with kidney problems. I was not feeding him the can food, but the dry from walmart. I have now switch to a Nature,s Recipes. I have four other dogs, and thinking about making there food instead. With all the dog food out there claiming to be the best, it is hard to tell anymore. Well anyways my heart goes out to all you that have lost a pet because of this, i know how much i care for mine.
We lost our beautiful Chasity (Chas) She was a 5 year old Rott because we fed her O’Roy biscuits. We had no ideal that these biscuits were tainted. We miss Chas very much And the kids say we will never have another dog like her because she was the greatest dog. She is sadly missed but we have learned a good lesson we rather give our other animals scraps from the table.
My grandma’s dog was already suffering from kidney issue’s. The doctor said she had maybe another year or so left and was doing well. She started throwing up and her kidneys started getting worse. My grandma woke up to find her dead in the kitchen. This was right before the tainted food was even known about. The vet found traces of rat poisen in the dog. Who can my grandma contact in regards to this?
Canadae is a high quality dogfood that was not effected. We feed our dog that mixed with home cooked food includding boiled chicken, brown rice, lean beef and hard boiled eggs and veggies. She has never been healther with much more energy and a very healthy coat. I was told by many top breeders in the US and Australia to go raw meat and bones or home cooked food with or without kibble.
Check http://www.howl922.com for the absolute latest information on the recalls. I lost a cat to Wal-Mart brand special kitty pouches on March 11, 6 days before the recall. The smug SOB that runs MenuFoods needs to eat his own products. I have 26 pouches of poison at my house that I will not return because someone else’s baby could die because some clerk puts it on the shelf.
hi,my manager at work said he had thoughts that he thinks that the foreigners different ones from countries where probaly doing that to pets so they could see what it whould it could do to us i told him you never know these days possible it’s just horrible
Shannon,
Sorry to hear about your loss, my dad’s cat died too. It’s such a hard thing to deal with. Read my post #108 and check out the site http://www.pamperedpetzone.com Those people are so helpful and nice. I switched over to their food Life’s Abundance and my dog Spike loves it. I’m done buying my food from a huge store. Good Luck. and check out the picture of the jack russel puppy on the home page.
Cory
I think it is so dumb that people can let something that can harm pets and then let it out so that it can kill nice pets and stuff so I am sorry for anyone who has lost their pets!
I lost my beloved “Walter” on April 12th. He was a very healthy 7 yr. old,18lb.Maine Coon. Within two weeks,he stopped eating and lost 7 lbs. and had acute kidney failure. He was eating Royal Canin “indoor” cat food. Even though that particular cat food hasn’t been recalled, I can’t help but believe thats what killed my cat.
Even though we’re told the affected foods were manufactured Dec 2006 – Jan 2007, I wonder if there were tainted products on the shelves earlier than that. I lost two cats in 2006 – in March, my healthy beautiful 6 yr old suddenly became lethargic and declined rapidly. Four days later she was diagnosed with acute renal failure and we had to put her to sleep. In October, our 12 year old cat also died of renal failure. While this may have been due to natural causes, the sudden death of the 6 year old was not normal. But both of them taken together, dying of the same cause, is suspicious. I will bet there’s been tainted pet food before now.
I notified Sams Club of a “possible’ problem with a canned dog food we purchased at their Overland park, Ks. location. Our Collie, Andy, died March 28 after becoming ill 2 days before Christmas. The pet food recall has just now been connected to “WalMart”. What a shame that Andy had to die and how many others, without WalMart/Sams responding.
If you know of anyone feeding their animal food from Sams/Walmart, please encourage them to STOP before their pet dies.
Why would anyone feed their pet Ol’ Roy brand food? It has never been tested in feeding trials and contains ingredients of questionable quality.
Everyone is speaking of their pets as being “healthy” until they suddenly become ill. Ask yourselves how you know your pet was healthy before. They are not able to tell you they have an ache here, or discomfort there. Just because a pet does not have symptoms one day and suddenly does the next, does not mean that their problem happened overnight.
Be reasonable, be informed, use the advice of your veterinarian. What is printed in the popular press is not necessarily fact.
My cat (13 yrs old and always healthy) died of a mysterious illness on Dec 4, 2006. She began to retain fluid and her kidneys shut down. Her favorite food and the one I bought most often was Friskies Chef’s Blend dry food. If this wasn’t tainted, it is possible that she could have been fed something else by a neighbor. Also, I had run out of food a few weeks earlier and ran out to the convenience store near my home and bought a small bag of some off brand food to use until I went shopping. She didn’t like it and there was more than half a bag of it left when she died. I threw it away because that was before I heard of the pet deaths from tainted food. I wonder if she could have been poisoned by this tainted food?
What is the incredient in Iamms dog food that I should be looking for that may harm my dog?
thank you

After three week-long stays at the veterinary hospital, our beloved pet cat died after aspirating vomit and going into cardiac arrest. We are sure it was from eating Hills Prescription Diet C/D Feline dry cat food, even though the vet assured us the cat food was not recalled. We are sure because that is all the cat ever ate since his urinary problems started several years ago. Prior to that he still only ate dry cat food, no scraps or anything else ever, his entire life of 10 years. The vet kept asking if there was any poison the cat could be getting into each time we brought him back. I checked the house repeatedly, but there was nothing that could have caused it. We paid thousands of dollars to try and save him, but when he came home and was able to eat dry cat food again he again became very ill and died in the veterinary hospital. The vet advised us that his liver was swollen and he had kidney failure when we took him back. The FDA is looking into it, but so far no one is taking any responsibility for it. The vet “lost” the cat food we gave them for testing and we provided them more, but we still have no results. My wife and I are both disabled and this has been a nightmare, trying to save our beloved cat. We miss him dearly, his name was Blue.
Michael I am soooo sorry for your pain and loss! I feel so bad about what is happening out there in the pet world. What makes me feel even worse is that I have been trying to tell people about the hazards of main stream pet food long before this crisis began. I am displaying the ingredients of the food you were feeding your beloved cat. Even though the vet is telling you this food has not been recalled it is loaded with harmful ingredients.
Ingredients of Hills Prescription Diet C/D Feline dry cat food (fond on Hill’s own web site)
Brewers Rice, Chicken By-Product Meal, Corn Gluten Meal, Pork Fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid), Chicken Liver Flavor, Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, Calcium Carbonate, Calcium Sulfate, Iodized Salt, Vitamin E Supplement, vitamins (L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Riboflavin, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Folic Acid, Vitamin D3 Supplement), Taurine, minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), preserved with BHT and BHA, Beta-Carotene.
If you look at some of the ingredients you will see by-product meal(ground beaks, feathers, toenails, hair and bones) when by products are used, often times the collar and tags haven’t even been removed. You will also see corn gluten meal (a known allergen and hard to digest, very taxing on their immune system). Preservatives are mentioned, they are needed because most food that is main streamed (bought in a retail setting) takes approx 18 months to reach the shelf for you to buy. Ingredients are listed from most to least so you can see how this food is loaded with harmful ingredients.
Non of this is your fault! Pet food companies have been misleading the public for far to long.
I beg anybody out there still confused about what to feed their animals check out the video on my site and contact me. http://www.pamperedpetzone.com I am on a crusade to help stop this madness and offer a healthy alternative to pet owners who are tired of being misled.
I had two cats both on low residue Eukanuba dry cat food. One died Feb 24 suddenly of fatty liver – symptoms would not eat and weight loss and the second one I had to put to sleep today from severe pancreatitis. Symptoms in the beginning would not eat, nausea, confusion near the end and slept most of the day. Both were only 7 years old. I can’t help but think it is the food. They were both inside cats and ate nothing else. How can I get the food tested?
Friggin Canadian losers reselling poisoned crap from China. Go figure.
I am so sorry for everyones pain and confusion! I am in tears as I write this from reading your thoughts and because I lost my beloved 8 1/2 year old Pepper just before Thanksgiving 2008. She loved the holidays and I am not looking forward to Christmas without her at all, she shared her life and love with friends and family. Funny she was fine playing and acting like a Puppy running jumping and catching only 5 days before her passing. She aged 20 years in 5 days after I fed her from the new bag of Pedigree Small Crunchy bites. I became suspicious after what I thought was a premature passing, and now see that Pedigree is on a list of recalls!!??. I wondered why I also had diarreah at the same exact time as my 2 dogs.
she did not eat it (after the first runny stools), for a whole day then she was better, then she had no choice because I left it in her bowl and went to work and she ate it again, little did I know I killed my very best friend I ever had. I hope she forgives me. I helplessly watched her take her last breaths 3 days later sudden death? she waited for me to get home my little darling took her last walk with me and that was it!! that night. This is truly unfair to me and all you fellow pet guardians, I feel everyone’s pain and we are so lost looking for answers. Take care fellow animal lovers……..I was researching home made menus for my dear Poodle (who is with me now she was crying and depressed for 2 weeks after our best friend was taken) and came upon this site, so angry and confused, I thought this brand was safe it was never in the media. PS I bought my Pedigree small crunchy bites at Walmart in Delaware. I wonder when this sadness will lift up off of me? It was the best I could do at the time financially the dry Pedigree food, had I known I would have starved and gave her my food instead, I did not know I was killing my pal, I am so broken I have to say goodnight and thanks to everyone for sharing their thughts and don’t trust these people they only care about profits regardless of the emotional pain and suffering they have caused for thousands. How could greed and stocks consume and eliminate the human emotions?
This had never happened before where I was affected also with like symptoms, plus they both did not have this problem at the same time in the past 5 years. It all just seem fishy. I had just purchased the bag the week of her passing, she tried to tell me
Another pet food recall in March 2009? what is it about the spring time that makes companies want to kill our pets? THIS IS so wrong I have a list of recalls I got from the web and took it to walmart and they still had all the recalls on their shelf!!@ OMG so wrong they told me it will be flagged at the register, yeah sure I said you have min wage workers that wont know what that means and it will either go home with a customer or end up back on the shelf.. so wrong sooo soo wrong
