This forwarded email tells the alarming story of 4-year-old Halle Butler of Okmulgee, Oklahoma, who licked hand sanitizer off her skin instead of rubbing it in after her preschool teacher applied it and ended up in the emergency room with symptoms of intoxication. Did you know that most commercially available hand sanitizer gels consist of at least 60% ethyl alcohol? It's true...

Okay, so what’s the real TRUTH? Does it contain any kind of alcohol or doesn’t it?

I don’t know about the Hands2GO product but for sure the Classy Kid foaming hand sanitizer for kids doesn’t. It uses benzalkonium chloride to kill germs. You can buy it at babycenter.com.

The email I just received said the little girl’s BAC was at 85%–that’s impossible.

Granted, the writer probably meant .085%. Even so, that BAC level could require more than 1/2 ounce of hand sanitizer depending on the girls weight. How could she have held that much in her hands let alone lick it up? Drinks above 40% alcohol (80 Proof) strongly irritate the mouth and throat. At 65% (130 Proof) hand cleaner would be difficult to lick or drink. No doubt something happened, but not this story as told. I would classify this one as plausible but not likely.

Research products we thought were safe: Go to http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com

hands2go is a level 3 on /www.cosmeticsdatabase.com which rates any/all products for their ingredients – sanitizers, makeup, lotion, bodywash etc. for my kids is the only one I found to be natural not chemical based, however you still could not eat it.

The aim of hand sanitizers is to fix the viruses and killing the germs. Without ethly alcohol it is impossible to kill the bacterias. So the actual aim is to add ethly alcohol on hand sanitizers. I am manufacturer of hand sanitizers, and my customers does not want sanitizers if they contain less than 65% alcohol.

To lick the shampoo is also poisonous. But our children is getting bath right?

I believe that the real risk with these products is the skin damage they may cause in children with sensitive skin. Also the risk that thorough hand washing will be abandoned.
