I'm kidding, of course. But the hundreds of thousands of gullible users who forwarded this chain letter over the past 10 years didn't do it for a laugh. They did it because they truly believed Microsoft founder Bill Gates wanted to pay them big bucks for spamming their family and friends.
For the record, Mr. Gates himself disavowed this still-popular hoax in a 1998 essay aptly entitled "How to Waste Time on the Internet."
