U.S. Marines / Puppy Throwing Video

By , About.com GuideMarch 4, 2008

Follow me on:

Screenshot of YouTube video purporting to show U.S. Marines throwing a live puppy off a cliffA viral video (beware, disturbing content) showing a pair of U.S. Marines callously joking as they throw what appears to be a live puppy off a cliff has sparked public outcry and an official investigation, reports Alex Boese at the Museum of Hoaxes. While there is an ongoing debate as to the authenticity of the footage -- Was the puppy real? Was it alive when thrown, or already dead? Is it a hoax, a prank, an anti-military conspiracy? -- Marine Corps officials say they aren't taking it lightly and intend to get to the bottom of the incident so "appropriate action" can be taken.

Hmmmm…we teach these guys to devalue human life, so why would they value animal life?

(3) Suzie says:

I think in any case, these guys are getting way more publicity than they deserve. Fortunately, there are more stories in the media showcasing soldiers who have adopted stray dogs from Iraq, and bend over backwards to bring them to the States.

March 5, 2008 at 6:19 pm
(4) Pz_MelOtt says:

Suzie, we expect American soldiers to want to adopt and care for dogs, just like we expect them to protect and care for children in other lands. When I see stories of our soldiers doing good things for the innocent I’m pleased, but I’m not surprised. I expect to hear that. But this is atrocious and a poor representation of our soldiers. However your veiled attempt at implying this is some baseless anti-war uproar is also shameful. If real, what these two idiots did is give cause to others to hate us more and demean our fine military. We shouldn’t hide it, we should be making significant note of it and show to the rest of the world, as well as our own country, this is not US.
Stop watching FOX News and O’Reilly.

I love animals, but lets keep our priorities in line here folks? Consider this: would you volunteer to be euthanized in place of an animal? Hmmmmmm???? No,,there should have been no torture like this. Yes, their CO should correct this behavior,,,,NO there should NOT be this much publicity over this incident. It’s a tragedy that we as humans tend to cling onto a ‘negative’ and ingnore a ‘positive’ thought…….enough said.

I disagree. I think whatever a human does to an animal then that same thing should happen to the human. So those sick bastards deserve to be slung over a cliff. It’s like takeing a news born infant and throwing it over. It’s sick. They deserve to die for that. Every life is special whether animal or human

(8) Chris says:

I am glad this scum is getting all the publicity for this disgusting act. They posted it on utube – take the flack and whatever else you get. There are not positives from this video. This was a puppy – when you pick up a puppy like that he does not move. It is the way a mother dog picks up the puppy and they go limp and don’t move. For all those saying it’s a fake – it is not. I truly hope those men make another trip to Iraq and this time a one-way trip. Marines are meant to defend the weak and have compassion – they are just vicious bullies and I can only imagine if they could happily do this to a defenseless puppy what horrors they will inflict on women and children. Burn in hell!

I guess we really do have some DUMB Americans in our country that would beleive anything they see is real on a website. We are dealing with third world menatlity that would do ANYTHING to show cause Americans Soldiers are cruel and harmful being on their soil. Shallowness and disgrace to all of you who believe this to be true. Lets get a name from their uniform or confirm it’s really an American Soldier before assuming to quickly. Look at the videos 9/11 of the towers falling with over 3000 innocent dying for no reason. That was real!!! Never forget how great of a country you are privilaged to live in! I’m sure you take our freedom lightly, by believing this video so quickly to be true. That’s UN-AMERICAN!!

Tony
talk about dumb Americans. what has Iraq got to do with 9/11& innocent dieing? the iraqi are the dieing innocent that has george Bush, the true un-American, smelling like Texas steer crap.

(11) Tony G says:

Gerald, it goes way before George W.Bush. If we didn’t do in the 40’s WWII (remove Hitler)this country/world for that matter would be completely different. Clinton had a chance to stop things in the 90’s and chose to ignore!! We paid those consequneces 9/11/2001. Hussain was (finally) removed only after killing 150k-200k innocent of his own people. The big picture is up & coming with Iran, Afghan, Syria. This is a completely different war we are in today. Apprecite your freedom..

March 6, 2008 at 12:26 pm
(12) Tony G says:

If you think this country is all that bad to live in because of George Bush, then pack it up and go. Please leave this country, it will be a better place for my kids and grandkids. Go live in Iraq, Syria, Afghan, Syria, Iran or even Norh Korea. And take all you ignorant family with you as well. I’m very proud to be an American and believe in our principles. It’s not perfect here or anywhere else, just better.

(15) John says:

This is obviously anti-American propaganda. The fact that so many have fallen for it shows it was effective. Quit believing everything the media spoon feeds you. Learn to think for yourself. There was a time in America when people actually did just that. We can start again! Don’t be led, or follow, THINK FOR YOURSELF!

we are all going to look stupid when it comes out, which it will, that it was a fake puppy.. I have seen stuff Dogs in stores that look so damn real it was hard to not think they were. It went overboard and so on and so forth.

(17) Brenda says:

If this video is real, I hope these *******s get the same treatment. They need to be tossed over the hill just like the puppy. And the military allows *******S like these to PROTECT US??????? What a joke! They might be reminded that there IS a judgement, whether or not they get punished on earth. If they do this to a helpless little puppy, what will they do to a child. They need to be locked away in a 3 x 3 concrete cell for LIFE! I have no pity on anyone that would do this and it makes me sick. KARMA you idiots! Your day is coming!

Oh joy, another of the “If you don’t like it, leave the country” folks. Don’t you realize that the soldiers who fight for this country are also the ones that gave us the freedom to disagree? Or should we just be mindless sheep and support every word that comes out of our leader’s mouths? Just because we disagree doesn’t mean we need to leave the country. It’s an opinion and we all have a right to them.

WOW!!! If we didn’t have any ignorant people in this world, then what would we do? Jk. No, what really needs to happen is, people, whether it’d be Americans or not, need to have common sense. Personally, I’m just 15 years old, and most comments on this particular incident, are exaggerated. What really makes me mad is, people will be the first to bash all of the military system , even though it was just two men, but yet no one will bash the whole American population even though people do wrong everyday.

The Military Doctors have been facing an overflow of wounded soldiers, a shortage of rooms, supplies, and time to treat them. By diagnosing P.T.S.D. as a Personality Disorder, they usher out one GI, saving thousands of dollars, and freeing up space for 3or 4 who are waiting. Unlike in the private sector, military Doctors who give a questionable diagnosis face no danger of malpractice suits due to Feres V, U.S., a 1950 SCOTUS that bars soldiers
from suing for negligence.

Many of our GIs in Iraq, & Afghanistan are taking Prozac and other SSRIs, according to a story in the NY Times Magazine on Feb. 24th by Elizabeth Rubin
The story is entitled ,”Battle Company is Out There.” It will open your eyes, a little bit. As a Veteran, I’m pissed!

(24) Suzanne says:

I hate when bad soldiers are defended just for being soldiers. These guys should be dishonorably discharged and put in jail. If this was my relative our relationship would be over and I would have nothing but shame and disgust for him. The fact that the family is defending him and making excuses shows what kind of people we are talking about. The Marines have done enough covering up of atrocities in Iraq – all that does is end up hurting the reputation of soldiers who are serving honorably.

I agree with Jim, all of you out their attacking these guys for throwing a puppy off the mountains but have no say of the thousands of babies that die each DAY. How dare you! You might not believe in abortion but over 1/2 of our population will vote for a president that supports it and sees nothing wrong with it. Maybe we as Americans should figure out our own morals before we go critizing others!

(30) Lynn says:

Cruelty is cruelty whether it’s a baby or a puppy, not saying the puppy is as important as a baby, but the level of cruelty is the same. They probably would have thrown a baby over if that’s what they had run across. But, the whole military is not responsible, you will find jerks in every occupation and walk of life. Just because these jerks joined the service, doesn’t make them any less jerks. They’ll still be jerks when the get back the USA, most likely were jerks before they left and this is probably not the first animal they have tortured for fun. God sees them, they’ll answer to Him.

(34) Dave says:

If this is real, cruelty to animals is punishable and must be handled within the justice system. Such cruelty is not , however, limited to the military; dog fighting, bird fighting, and other animal fighting exists here in the United States and throughout the world. Not only are many people cruel to animals and also to other humans. I am not minimizing the video. I am just asking us all to address the cruelty wherever we see it and whatever form it takes. Finally, it is your duty to protest just as it is the duty of those in uniform to protect that right to protest. You may not like what you hear but be thankful you are allowed express and to hear every side without fear of imprisonment or worse.

(40) M. Kring says:

I am deeply troubled if this video is actual footage of the killing of an innocent life. Many people are losing sight of what the underlying problem is. If this Soldier/Marine actually threw this puppy off of a cliff then he is in need of a psychological evaluation along with the other parties involved. As a soldier myself, you cannot blame the war on his behavior. Many Service Members go through combat and do not become murderers. As a matter of fact the majority of us DO NOT. This troubled young man has simply slipped through the cracks of society and needs to be treated accordingly…whoever he is. Sooner or later that behavior is going to be exhibited on an innocent human being if left to go on untreated. I pray that the USMC/Army stands true to it’s word and investigates this thoroughly. If this is actual footage, this is simply a cry for help.

Thank you,

MK

(43) Me says:

Also, I notice the most people who post things about abortion are men. You will NEVER EVER be able to know what it is like to have to make a decision like that. So will you PLEASE stop commenting on this woman’s issue? We should have a right to abort a baby that we will not be able to raise by ourselves because of some man leaving or raping us. And if you think, “Oh they can give it up for adoption…” could you carry a baby for 9 months and then have it just to give it away??? Archeologists found hundreds of baby bones at the bottom of the Roman aquaducts. This has been going on for centuries.

(50) Sgt Tim Gallien says:

I am a United States Marine, I was in the infantry at 3/5. One thing I have always told people about Marines is our compassion for others and our love for life, and the will and desire to protect it and defend it. I will not refer to this individual as a Marine. Animals in the Marine Corp have a special place. They are the only beings a Marine knows that never and will never deserve the evil things that happen to them, thus they have historically been protected as such, representing ultimate innocents. The actions of this POS, throwing a helpless puppy off a cliff to it’s death, is sick and evil. I will never defend the USMC or any POS like him when psychotic people express there true colors and the Corps slaps him on the wrist. I am ashamed as a Marine today. I can tell you all this. If this had happened in any of my units while in the infantry, this POS would have been “delt with” and had a VERY HARD TIME in the corp for the rest of his days. He is no brother of mine.

Clinton’s fault how lame. Reagan armed both Iraq and Iran. Rerun’s daddy was in the best position as any President to remove Saddam and didn’t do so. Only one person was president on 9/11/2001 and his administration was in effect dealing with the taliban on 9/10/2001

I understand it’s a soldier’s basic job is to kill or be killed, but surely they have the intelligence not to film stuff like this or at least not make it public with faces fully visible.

i am ex army ranger and honestly i think it is perfectly arguable that thes two jareads are goin through alot of stress with watchin buddies die and killing iraqi insurgents they arent sure if they are gonna be alive tommorrow so this was in my eyes a way for them to releive all the stresses of being in acombat zone, cruel to civilians who have no idea how stressful being in that hellhole sandbox is, true they should be chewed out by there co. but locked up i think not why punish two marine for killing a dog, a dog i mean seriously take two men out of the fight for killing a dog how do u expect them to kill grown iraqi men, but its not ok to kill a dog that just makes no sense war isnt black and white all u people with your comments go spend a year fighting and killing and see if it doesnt mess u up in the head, if you were in there shoes u would be singin a diffrent tune i gurantee that.

September 21, 2008 at 1:14 pm
(54) Heather says:

I disagree with you Ryan – I am ex-military, born and raised military, have friends and family in Iraq now as well as have friends who were seriously injured while watching all of their men die around them after being nailed by a grenade. NONE of them would ever EVER do something as sick as that.
When you join the military during times of war you should expect being in a f***** up situation – war isn’t Disneyland and if you think it is stick to your pc games. Don’t use your ‘trip to hell’ to validate acts of cruelty, no matter if it is towards a dog or human. I have no respect for people who join the armed forces and then whine about how bad it is – oh I didn’t know it would be like this wah wah wah. Our men and women in uniform should behave in the most upright manor possible – if they aren’t mentally strong enough to handle it then they should get the hell out!
Your summed up logic of “I don’t know if I’ll be alive tomorrow so let me kill a puppy” is just insane.

(58) maestrowindows says:

The sounds are all wrong in that clip of the “puppy throwing.”

I’ve been involved with dogs since I was 12, breeding and training, and there is no way the sounds in that Youtube video were coming from a real puppy. If you actually hurled a puppy by the scruff of its neck, the first sound you would hear would be a loud scream as it was launched, because you would have very nearly torn its neck off. Notice, though, the puppy is completely silent as it is thrown. The ridiculous yelping noises don’t start until after the pup is airborne.

That’s your second problem, because just as a human needs to take repeated breaths to keep yelling, a dog must be breathing in order to yelp. (Imagine trying to scream while spinning head-over-heels in the air.) The puppy would have gone completely stiff as it flew, tensing up and spreading its legs to try to cushion the fall. Definitely no gasping for breath and yelping.

Final problem – there is no way that a crap camera like the one used to shoot that video would be able to pick up an airborne puppy’s faint yelping from dozens of yards away, yet the “yelping” barely decreases in volume during the puppy’s flight.

I don’t know what was thrown – probably a dead puppy – but I am absolutely certain that there is no way on earth the noises in the video were made by the puppy we see there.

I believe the puppy was real because i saw a clip of it, but turned it off before they threw it, it was a border collie pup that whinned as it was thrown.
I got an invitation inviting me to join the marines the other week. I would rather die, becuase all i want to do in life is create and animal shelter i want to help abandoned animals, not throw them ove cliffs like the marines.
