Gift Cards Aren't Forever

With major companies filing bankruptcy left and right, some folks are concerned that their gift cards may be rendered useless. And they're right -- at least in a few notable cases. Here's a forwarded email that lists six or seven recent bankruptcies (though not entirely accurately) and recommends fishing those cards out of the drawer and spending them right now. Read more...

Another thing to watch for is “Service Charges”. After a certain amount of time, some gift cards begin to lose their value. Stores will begin to deduct money from the card automatically. I had a Lowe’s card that lost about $5 defore I even used it. If you wait too long, theoretically the card could be worthless. Beware of this questionable practice!
