Rumor: Sarah Palin Faked Pregnancy to Protect Teenage Daughter

By , About.com GuideSeptember 1, 2008

Follow me on:

On Saturday I was emailed a copy of a rumor making the rounds since John McCain's announcement of Sarah Palin as his running mate, to wit:

Palin's faked "pregnancy"? Covering for teen daughter?

Okay, I just have to diary about this, although in many ways this falls into the "none of our business category".

But it appears that Pallin's [sic] last child, a baby with Down's syndrome, may not be hers. It may be that of her teenage daughter.

Here's another version:

Whoah! Talk about skeletons coming out of the closet! Sources are saying that Sarah Palin's daughter, Bristol Palin, 16, became pregnant, and that Sarah Palin pretended the baby was her own! This would have been her "fifth child" that has Down's Syndrome. So did Sarah Palin fake her pregnancy or is this just a rumor?

And another:

Sarah Palin did not give birth . . .

to the Down Syndrome baby according to Daily KOS. Her unmarried, Catholic school, 16 year-old daughter did.

Palin pretended to be pregnant, and covered it up to protect her daughter's reputation. The father possibly could be Gov. Palin's brother-in-law, who she fired from the Alaska State Troopers.

The logic of these allegations escapes me. Is a teen pregnancy so scandalous in this day and age that any parent — even an ambitious, highly visible public official with so much more to lose than most people if she's caught, like Sarah Palin — would go to such extreme lengths to hide it?

Can any of you left-wing conspiracy nuts who buy into this theory point to a single example of such a thing ever happening before in real life — a mother pretending to be pregnant for nine months and literally faking a birth to "cover for" or "protect the reputation of" her pregnant teen daughter?   (UPDATE: Several readers respond that the answer is yes. See comments below.)

It makes no sense to me.

The case, such as it is, is laid out by ArcXIX on Daily Kos, with photos purportedly showing high-school-age Bristol Palin looking more pregnant than her mother.

• On the other hand, this photo shows Palin with a decided bulge. Other snapshots taken in February and March seem to show an expectant-looking Palin as well.

• Huffington Post's Lee Stranahan calls it "the wackiest rumor about Sarah Palin or any other politician so far this election" -- and this, mind you, is an election in which one candidate has already been accused of being the Antichrist.

UPDATE: How's this for a rebuttal: Sarah Palin announced on Monday that daughter Bristol is currently five months pregnant. Who knew?

I’m a Republican woman in her late 40′s, and I’m sorry but this story sounds suspicious. Especially since her daughter was pulled out of school for 5 months. Sarah Palin is already being investigated for her abuse of power trying to get her ex brother in law fired as a state trooper, which so happened to be in a custody fight with her sister. This woman couldn’t afford another scandal… especially since she believes in only abstinence and not sex education. By the way CNN was interviewing Bob Barr mentioned that John McCain did not vet Sarah Palin in the normal process because he wanted it to be very private… but that is a risk when you don’t vet people the proper way.

My vote is with Bob Barr.

You seem not to realize that Sarah Palin defines herself largely as being pro-life and pro-abstinence. Letting the public discover that her kid got knocked up would destroy that image. Don’t blow it off until you read more about it — as in, not in email forwards.

This is hardly a left-wing conspiracy. McCain introduces a complete unknown into a volatile campaign. Answers are needed to questions. Calling any suspicion or question a left-wing conspiracy is typical right-wing politics. Point the finger at someone else to avoid your own guilt. These rumors can so easily be put down with a few facts. Until they’re provided, rumors will abound. HOWEVER, the real problem isn’t if she’s covering up the fact that her daughter is a slut and slept around. It’s that she believes creationism should be taught in science class. What other non-scientific theories should be taught in science class – UFO’s, psychic hotline, witchcraft. Give me a break. The left-wing hardly needs this rumor to show she doesn’t have the ability to be a leader. She’s no better than the people at the airport handing out leaflets.

HOW MANY OF OBAMA’S CONSTITUENTS ARE SINGLE MOMS?
You know the Obama speeches about how fathers
need to be responsible and not abandon their
children’s mothers. What hypocracy for Obama’s
attack dogs to now smear Palin’s family for their
daughters pregnancy.DAILY KOS ARE SCUM BAGS !!!
All you small minded people who are crucifying Governor Palin over the question of her fifth child, are just fueling a vicious smear campaign. Besides, if you want to exhibit your holier-than-thou attitude … why don’t you get even more angry at Obama, Michelle, and their children, for spending 20 years in an anti-American racist church, as well as associations with Farrakhan, Wright, Ayers, Rezko, etc.. These facts are much more relevant to the next administration, than the possibility of a loving mother taking the heat to protect her child and grandchild.

September 1, 2008 at 1:45 pm
(23) Goshkruse says:

Let’s think about this. To prove she didn’t have her child’s baby, she says her child is now pregnant and, therefore, could not have been hers. Wouldn’t it been easier to just someone come forward and confirm it was your? And did McCain really know?

(24) Seeking The Absolute Truth says:

I noticed that on Sunday, Aug 31 on CNN while Palin and McCain were walking around and interacting with FEMA (to prepare for Gustav Hurricane) Palin’s nipples were visable through her blouse. Considering she has a 4 month old baby, wouldn’t she be wearing the pads in her bra in the event that her milk leaks? Something doesn’t seem right here. Am I the only one who noticed this?

September 1, 2008 at 2:16 pm
(25) Silvia says:

These rumours are crazy. It’s well known that most Down’s Syndrome babies are born to older mothers. So it figures that Trig, who has Down’s, is the child of Sarah Palin, who is 44. Maybe it was selfish to go on and give birth to a Down’s Syndrome child but if she had already made her views on abortion public, she had to stick by them. It’s not really fair to blame her if her daughter Bristol gets pregnant. No parent can completely control their child or nail them down at home every minute of the day.

September 1, 2008 at 2:28 pm
(26) Jim says:

Isn’t it amazing! All talk about how the left is always lying about the people on the right. This from the people who put out the push poll that John McCain had a black child out of wedlock, the Swift Boat ads, the proven lies about Barack Obama’s background and religion and on and on.

I guess that they expect to hide the truth by pointing at someone, anyone, else.

Question, what does it say about Palin’s “family values” when she can’t teach them to her daughter?

Personally, I think Palin is a true Republican and the perfect choice for McCain. Younger than Obama not any more experience than Obama ( and don’t tell me that being the mayor of a small town or being on the PTA counts as experience), a card carrying member of the NRA shown on television firing an assault rifle, a pregnant, unwed, minor daughter, thinks drilling ANWR will fix our oil problem and is under investigation for ethics violations, to wit abuse of power (sound like any other Republican(s) we all know an hate?

Left wingers cannot win fairly on the issues. They are the lowest form of life with no imagination. I only hope that they take responsibility if Obama, the “uh um..ah..um..umm ah candidate plunges the United States into complete and total chaos. It is the left wing nut jobs who never take responsibility for their votes. Remember the only thing that gives them ability to voice their opinions, however ludicrous, are the very concepts of democracy and capitalism they so hate. If Obama does get elected, his complete and total inexperience coupled with his god like arrogance may very well create the socialistic euphoria the left wing truly want. Careful what you wish for. Take responsibility for your vote and understand that when your wonderful euphoria leaves you wanting…you will once again turn to us to fix your mess.

Well, now here it is on the Republicans!!!! They are not innocent and probably didn’t want this story out BEFORE Palin’s speech excepting the Vice Pres position. A pregnant 17 yr old seems likely to have asked Palin just what she stands for!!!Is she ready for the position—or does she need to stay home and help babysit.. This will change the people’s minds about McCain and his attempt to be Pres….He is not plnning on running for office again anyway as he just wants the glory 4 yrs—-Well, McCain will just be dissapointed—-he reads his speeches from his cheat sheets—–so annoying. McCain can not compete with Obama as he walks all over you. Obama speaks with such determination and wisdom. He will walk all over this potential vice pres nominee….Hillary will have her say so too. Biden??? He will take a shot too.

2. If you have a 4 month of downs baby…why would you accept the offer to run for VP. Shouldn’t you stay closer to take care of your baby?
3. If you are under investigation…why would you accept – today 9/1/08 she just hired an attorney.
4. A lot of this just doesn’t add up…..even the 5th baby thing seems strange

This is a fine example of family values. The values of the Palin family the family values we want to show our young girls. Now, do we the American people and government want to win this war or so called war we are now in. If we do I dont think we need to put a Democrate in office. Havent we learned anything in the last 40+ years. We all know we had Democrates in office during Veitnam and we had our butts handed to us. We lost that war. We all have seen how the Democrats will cut the military spending and dwindle us (the military) down to nothing. We have all seen how it took a republican to bring us back and plant us back on our feet. Are we really ready to speak Arabic. If we put a Muselim in office this will happen. WE will be saying this is one nation under ALA and saying it in Arabic.

First, I want to know will she say the pledge of allegance and salute the flag. I think this is something that matters more than anything else. If our Presidents and Vice Presidents Now or in the future wont do this than I think they should be removed from office and or not allowed in their to start with. This Country was founded By men and women that beleived in god and trusted in god. And as we alll can see as time has gone by and more and more Atheists and non believers have got their ways the more this country has fallen. We as a country and its leaders are turning their backs to god and we the people of this country are paying the price.

Well, I could care less about they way her (Palin)family acts or the things they do. As we all know you can not, no matter how hard you try or teach, make your kids act as perfect little angels. We all know that kids will do what they want to do no matter what. So, why dont we just put this on the back burner and forget about it.

No one is out of school for 8 months with mono. It’s exactly the excuse girls use who get pregnant. No one takes a multi-hour plane ride after their water breaks with a premie baby then delivers a Downs child in a rural hospital. The photos of Sarah with a “bump” are ridiculous. How hard to you think it is for a woman to fake a pregnancy bump? Look at the photos when she’s supposedly 6 months pregnant.. nothing. Why would a governor who is so very pro life and proud of being pregnant not tell anyone she was pregnant for 7 months? And if it’s all a big fat terrible lie to smear her, all she has to do is release her medical records. Hmmm. Wonder why she doesn’t do that? Duh!! Hope the National Enquirer is on the job again, since the MSM sure isn’t. One more scoop for the tabs and the MSM is SO dead.

Bristol’s current pregnancy does not rule out the much-maligned rumor that Sarah was never pregnant with Trig; the timeline still works unless you believe Sarah when she says Bristol is “about five months” pregnant. Um. Or three to four…we won’t know till after the election is over, right?

To the person who says they feel bad for Bristol, so do I. Guess who has put her in this position? MOMMY DEAREST. If you were a mother who wanted to protect your daughter, would you accept the veep offer? Would you then out her as being pregnant to protect yourself from rumors that you’d not been pregnant with your most recent child?

This woman is insane. It will all come out soon. Just wish it would happen sooner yet!

Rumor has it that Bristorl’s boyfriend has a sister with a myspace that was not “Private” a few days ago and pictures were seen on her myspace with “the sister” holding baby Trig with the caption “I am an Auntie”. If she is an “Auntie” then wouldn’t that make Trig her nephew and Bristol her mommy? If this is true which is very possible, do we really want a liar in our office again? I know I don’t! Kinda reminds me of Desperate Housewives and Ms. Palin seems a little desperate now.

An outstanding President… Yet his political career was FILLED with scandal.

(43) Peace says:

She is the GRANDMOTHER of Trig, not the mother. Here are the photos as proof, page down half way and see evidence from the summer myspace page of Mercede who is the sister of baby-daddy Levi Johnston. In the captions, she refers to Sarah Palin as “mommy-in-law” and the baby Trig as her new baby brother.

http://cajunboy.tumblr.com/

The myspace page has since been taken down, but the evidence remains. Someone will talk. It’s a small town. Lies have short legs. RNC: Get the truth out now and do some damage control. Those preaching the loudest usually have the biggest skeletons to hide.

Let the girl have her baby, out in public, and please let the mom be proud of them both. Is Bristol pregnant now? Who knows. Maybe maybe not. But Bristol IS the mother of Trig.

And, here’s the Washington Post with the news about grandma Palin cutting funding in Alaska for help for pregnant teens. How ironic. Don’t teach them about birth control, and then throw them out on the street when they decide to keep their babies.

I don’t think this story has reached a conclusion. There is an added kick. One Anchorage reporter claims he had heard rumors of a Palin daughter pregnancy in April, before Trig was born, and before Bristol, by last report, could have known she was pregnant.

I think there are compelling questions to this rumor. None of the pictures prove anything, some still raise the question of whether Palin is stating the truth. I am on the side that DNA tests should be performed to avoid electing a blackmail-able candidate who committed an unethical act, if not fraud.

(50) HecticEclectic says:

If you look at the fine details, it makes perfect sense. Bristol’s ‘current’ pregnancy is deflection to get the hunters off the REAL scandal…

Look at the FACTS:

1. Sarah Palin didn’t tell anyone – not even her office staff – that she was pregnant until she was over 7 months.

2. Being allegedly pregnant with a Downs Syndrome baby, she did the following AFTER her water broke: gave a 30 minute speech, took an 8 hour flight home, drove 45 minutes in a car to a small hospital NOT equipped for premature births.

What CARING, sane mother would risk her own health – especially the health of her baby, by doing this??? Maybe one that wasn’t really pregnant at all and rushing home to daugher giving birth?

ALSO – on that 8 hour flight home? The flight attendants say they had NO IDEA that Sarah was either pregnant or in labor. They say she was pleasant, friendly and made no alarm. She didn’t even tell the airline she was pregnant (which they’re supposed to do).

Incidently, if anyone can find the birth record for Trig that day – in that hospital – post it, because it hasn’t been found yet.

Bristol’s 5 month absense from school coinsided perfectly with the birth of Trig. NO one loses that much school for mono – not anymore. Mono was the typical excuse used in “the days” for girls disappearing to go have a baby.

That would only happen if she’s actively nursing the baby. If a woman chooses NOT to breastfeed (bottle only) because …say… she’s TOO BUSY, then her milk would have never really come in. Any sign of milk would have disappeared within 2 weeks of birth and she’d be back to normal.

This does appear to be the way Hollywood views “gun totting” conservatives as witness the sub-plot in “Desperate Housewives” about Bree’s daughter’s baby. Possibly where some liberal got the idea for the story.

On the other hand, I believe this was not unusual behavior up to the 1950′s and possibly into the early 60′s.

On the gripping hand, wasn’t this the case with a famous male actor? Sorry, but I don’t remember his name. He was raised with his mother by his grandmother and was told that his mother was his “sister”.

(54) Maricia says:

It seems a bit suspicious that Sarah Palin waited to tell anyone at her job that she was pregnant for 7 months. Who does that? Women get pregnant and work at their job’s all the time so why the big deal. More than likely her daughter did not tell her about her pregnancy until she was a few months along. If you watched the last couple of season’s of Desperate Housewives, you would have seen the very same thing. The woman, Marsha, who plays Bri wore a fake tummy to look pregnant and sent her pg daughter away until the baby was born and then she claimed it was hers. You know how these popular TV shows gives people ideas. Why would she cover up her daughter’s pregnancy? So she would not look bad having a daughter who doesn’t practice what she preaches in her political views. Why would her daughter get pregnant again? To show her Mother that she can not control her life and to get her back for taking over her first child. Sarah Palin is probably a real control freak from the sound of her. If this happens to be true and is a “cover up”, I hope all involved are punished, the medical personnel who are involved and Palin herself. After all the Republican’s spent millions of tax payer’s dollars to impeach President Clinton for lying under oath. Just goes to prove what I have seen for the last 16 yrs, it’s OK for Republicans to lie and do under-handed things, but not Democrats. That party is a JOKE.

Most of these hate-monger comments seem to be coming from the younger generation. When discipline was removed from the control of the schools, children no longer, in general, received the influence of loving teachers who were able to help them realize the advantages of being honest, sincere, disciplined, loyal, and thought-provoking. People seem to be more in tuned with “hate-mongering” than with let’s be honest and fair in our assessments. It seems to be a “get even” mentality they carry in their hip pocket. For me, the hate-mongering began in Florida during the Gore-Kerry run for the White House. The Democrats seem to have developed a hate-Bush club which has grown with intensity during the Bush 2 terms. Is this a good example for our young people to witness and learn? No, it is not. Shame on all of you!! GL

I can’t believe you are dismissing this rumor because of photos of Sarah looking pregnant. We know how easily she could have faked that. Bristol being pregnant now does not negate the fact that this could be Bristol’s second child. I’m sure they are lying about the timing. Please research this and find some REAL evidence to dismantle this rumor. Don’t just dismiss it, the American people deserve to know the truth.

I saw a clip of Bristol at convention sitting
in the audience and how is it that her breasts looked huge, almost engourged while Sarahs’ do not look like a mother who is breast feeding? I’m just saying…..I nursed my child for a year and now the look. My

“On the other hand, I believe this was not unusual behavior up to the 1950’s and possibly into the early 60’s.”

And today among such backward-thinking people as Christian Fundamentalists and Republicans!

Who is the real Sara Palin?
Just show us the birth certificate and it will be settled. Why is it missing?
Why no birth pictures? It all adds up to a big, big lie. Tell us the truth Sara.

I’m surprised you did not cover the math rebuttal of this smear, David. A woman has a finite number of ova when she is born which decay over time, increasing her chances of giving birth to a baby with a genetic anomaly as she gets older. A woman in her mid-40s has a 1 in 20 chance of giving birth to a child with Down syndrome. A 16-year-old girl has a 1 in 2000 chance of giving birth to a child with Down syndrome. Add mathematical probability to this already disgusting and far-fetched proposal and you’ve got one epic fail of a conspiracy theory.

We are KLOR (kids’ League o republicans)

This is an outrage!! We are offended. We visited Palin while she was pregnant and instead of being her same upbeat person she is, she was moving her belly gingerly!! Miss Palin is a wonderful woman. We met her and interviewed her. I suspect that the DEMOCRATS had something to do with this. You know what? the word democrat came not from the word democracy but the word aristocrat. Aristocrats are people who believe they are the best of your kind. Think about that!!

At Texas OIL conference on Thursday, claims water broke, stayed to give 30 min speech, then took multi-leg plane trip back to Alaska, 12 hr travel-time, including to remote Alaska hospital not providing public details of birth. Baby born 6:30am Friday 1 month premature, then back to work Monday ?!

Statutory rape/undermining political principles at stake for cover-up motivation. Country already disillusioned with Bush administration’s misleading statements/motives/actions. Widespread motivation not to pile this truth-rumor(?) on top of that (for family privacy-protection, public morale :-(

Should not and has not been issue with presidential campaign other than to shed light on a
national newcomer.
Other public aspects publicized instead, not inconsistent with this cover-up incidently.

This easily dismissed with birth certificate,
but has not been… and may not matter much soon.

I used to trust this site as being factual, current and honest. I see David Emery hasn’t had the guts to look into this faked pregnancy since his original article. There’s tons of proof that Palin had lied to the country about her giving birth to Trig.

Where’s both Trigg’s AND Tripp’s birth certificates?

How does Sarah get pregnant when she had her tubes cut and burned after birthing Piper?

We’re waiting David…
