Remember that chain letter hoax offering free laptop computers from Ericsson to everyone who forwards the message to at least eight other people? It's over a year old at this point (and, for that matter, is a variant of a "free phone" hoax dating back to 2000), but it seems New Zealanders are just now making its acquaintance.
The hoax is "spreading across New Zealand's inboxes," the news website Stuff.co.nz reports. "For extra authenticity, the email bears a generic signature from electronics retailer Noel Leeming."
Rule of thumb: Treat "free laptop" offers the same way you'd treat offers for "free beer" or "free money." There's always a catch.
