NJ Man Arrested for Halloween Gang Initiation Hoax

Police have arrested a man for posting false reports on the Internet claiming that several women were shot and killed as part of a gang initiation rite on Halloween eve (Oct. 30, also known as "Mischief Night" in some locales). According to the Jersey Journal, 19-year-old Andrew T. Lazaro of Jersey City was charged with one count of causing false public alarm. Police Chief Tom Comey likened the prank to shouting fire in a crowded building.

Lazaro's postings contributed to a groundswell of rumors that began earlier in the day, prompting security alerts at some New Jersey high schools, and peaked as the rumors swept across the U.S. on Halloween.
