UPDATED 07/13/09: The same fake Amber Alert that fooled tens of thousands of people last February is making the Twitter rounds again, with a vengeance. The only essential change is that the text now claims the abducted child is three years old, not seven. The locale is currently specified as Idaho Falls, Idaho. (Your updates are welcome below.)

ORIGINALLY POSTED 02/10/09: It's a veritable case study in how fast and how far hoaxes can mutate and spread via social media.
An unofficial Amber Alert that apparently originated in Salt Lake City last Sunday night crisscrossed the country over the following two days, convincing well-meaning text messagers and Twitter users from Maryland to California that a 7-year-old girl in their state had been abducted by a man driving a "newer silver truck" with the license plate number 72B381.
The message is false. Police say there are no real missing-person cases fitting that description.
A very early version of the alert read as follows:
FWD: FWD: FW: AMBER ALERT A 7 yr old girl was taken by a man driving a newer silver truck. The license plate reads 72b381 please please pass on.
By the time Utah authorities disavowed the bogus message on Monday, it had already spread to Wisconsin...
Retweet: AMBER ALERT. A seven year old girl was taken by a man driving a newer silver truck. license plate # 72B381 Menomonie area FWD PLZ
...not to mention Woodward, Oklahoma...
AMBER ALERT!! A 7yr old girl was taken from Woodward by a man driving a newer silver truck plate # 72B381, please forward!
...and on to Tulsa...

From there, the Amber Alert hoax migrated to Fresno, California; Yuma, Arizona; Mahnomen, Minnesota; Lake Charles, Louisiana; Albany, Oregon; and many points in between. As of this writing, the bogus message is still circulating at a rapid clip in parts of Ohio and spreading into Iowa.
The geographical progression of the hoax can be roughly tracked by examining the Twitter search results for messages (several hundred of them so far, and counting) containing the bogus license plate number, "72B381."
FYI, Amber Alerts can (and clearly should) be authenticated by checking the Active Amber Alerts page on the website of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.

We don’t even have license plates like that in our area. At least I don’t think so. Anyways, I googled it, then sms’d the girl back that sent it to me to let her know it’s a hoax, so hopefully she’ll forward that on to everyone too.

One only has to google Amber Alert to see if it is real.. No need to worry whether it is face or not just take proper action. Then you will know if it is real or not. People are good to be concerned when it is real.

The hoax made it to Rhode Island last night when one of the Scouters at our monthly Roundtable meeting announced that he had just received the text alert. The rest of us had no reason to believe it was a hoax. I even wrote down the license number and color of the truck so I could keep my eyes open for it. It’s a good thing I didn’t see any truck matching the description as I would have caused some innocent person untold problems. Why do people get off on this?
Definately an effective way to get an amber alert out. Maybe if theres a way to legitamize it, this would be a good method to send these out. A hoax with a silver lining.

I heard this amber alert the other day Via Facebook! Thus why I had to search about it today to see if the little girl was safe and found. What I read on my friends Facebook status was there was a 7 year old girl missing from Chilliwack BC by a silver pick up truck with the License plate 72B 381. I’m way up in the Yukon!
I just received this alert message like 5min ago I am in Texas and googled the plate number as well. I think it is sad that someone would make up such a thing, its almost like making up that thier parents have passed. Sad sad deal I will pray for the people who made that up.

I just got it today Feb 12th. I live in Alaska. Before I sent it I looked up on the internet to see if it was real. It wasn’t so I decided to send out a message saying it was a hoax. Since we do have the WWW we should investigate before causing panic.

We received this message on 3/3/09 in Mansfield, Missouri. By the time we received it, it read that the abduction had taken place in Mansfield. Several of our friends who also received it forwarded it, not knowing it was a hoax. How can people be so cruel as to get people upset like that? We definitely see why people would forward the message out of concern for the victim. But it’s pretty rotten to change the location to make other people think there is danger in their area.

Even amberalert.com is emphasizing that these alerts should be verified before forwarding. While seemingly harmless, they do take attention from genuine alerts. (Did I say “alert” enough?)

What are the cheap thrills people get by spreading such stuff?
I always pass these messages for the following reasons: #1 A person who has a child missing may have started the message themselves while also contacting the authorities so I might be(unlikely as it may be)ahead of an official amber alert. #2 Anyone can post a page telling me to disregard it as bogus. A very smart kidnapper might think ahead and build that page him/her self. #3 I don’t have all day to research every amber alert and what do I care if some innocent guy is reported to the cops? The cops won’t do anything unless the man is actually wanted. And finally I am ok with tests that reveal how fast and vast an emergency post can travel through digital means. I will continue to repost and let the rest work itself out.
This would be okay if it were an acknowlegded test to see how far it could go, but another REAL Amber Alert came thru after that and because of this, nobody really paid attention and probably wont unless they get it on their phones from proper authorities like I do. I am a HUGE advocate of this system as I went thru something like this before when we didnt have this technology. I hope people will seriously think before doing this again
I dont see the threat of “boy who cried wolf” here. The only way that I even know that my repost was not helpful is this site and the people who send me the link to this site. Just repost them so that the ones that are real don’t get missed. If I see a silver truck with the license plate above I ma gonna stop the guy and call the police and let them figure all of this out. Maybe that way congress will write a bill against starting false amber alert and then the FBI can investigate the origins and prosecute someone for false amber alerts. That will solve the problem. I refuse to forward anything without first checking the item out online. Sure enough, around 8 p.m. EDST this evening (7/14/09), a variant of this alert has been quickly spreading through southern New Jersey — the information is identical to the one described in the article, with the difference that the 3 year old child is said to have been abducted from “E. Camden” (NJ, presumably). The alleged license plate number is the same as the one recited in the texts circulated in other states mentioned in the article.
I did the same thing and googled the plate#. I am in New Jersey.

Yeah I am in MN. Thankfully I am smart and immediately checcked the active amber alerts site then googled the lp number to make sure it was a hoax. Who is stupid enough to send this without checking? Wtf? Amber alerts are serious, not a game of freakin “telephone”. Also I always check crap like this and many other fwded things on snopes.com.

Just got the Amber Alert text a little over an hour ago and I am from Southwest Ohio. It is really too bad people start crap like this because the Amber Alerts have been a great device in finding abducted children. My 12 year old daughter just received it in Nassau County, NY from one of her friends. I thought that was odd so I checked the Amber Alert website first to see if it was legit? Obviously, it wasn’t!

I got this text about 10mins ago, in Santa Rosa, CA, and immediately knew it was fake. California license plates DO NOT have two numbers starting the plate number. It is always a number then a letter.. I immediately told the 5 people I got it from that it was a scam, and to let everyone that THEY told to do the same…
oh and since i googled it to see if this text that was on a serious topic was real, my “FRIENDS” are making fun of me! they need to grow up.

Also thought I’d let everyone know that the National Center for Exploited and Missing Children (NCEMC) has a wireless alert system that will text you any alerts for your area (you can register up to 5 zip codes for your phone number). One thing that really makes me mad about these hoaxes is that if there really was one and someone tried to let them know, they could ignore it thinking it was another fake. I just signed up for the wireless alerts so that I can be able to tell the difference. It’s completely free, as they have an agreement with the cell phone carriers that they won’t even charge you for the text itself. I hope everyone will check it out simply as a way to identify the hoaxes, and hopefully slow or even stop the spread of these so called “alerts”

I am in Texas and received the text late lastnight from someone with an Oklahoma number. I was concerned at the context of the message. But after looking it up on the internet I am upset with the thought that someone could have started such a hoax and it has managed to keep circulating for so long.

I live in NJ and received the message twice. In our area Amber Alerts are also broadcast on TV; so when I didn’t see an Amber Alert going off every few minutes, I got suspicious and looked it up. Nice to see so many were concerned enough to forward. However, folks should check the official Amber Alert site to see alerts in their area before circulating.

Being the child taken from two different locations and I am signed up for amber alerts via SMS for my area I researched the tag number via google and came across this page. I was so freaked out that this had happened in our little city that I woke my daughter up and brought her into bed with us. I have 4 children and if one of my kids were abducted I wouldn’t want their alert ignored. I’m impressed when people find out that these Amber Alert messages aren’t correct they instantly assume there is some sinister mastermind sending out fake Amber Alerts.
It’s more likely that the original sender garbled a half-heard Amber Alert and then the updated version of “Telephone” came into play with endless copying-and-pasting of emails to the ends of the Earth.
Don’t assume malice when simple human error can explain things.

I received this hoax text a few times. I was in Idaho in June and got it from Boise…I spent half my vacation keeping an eye out for the truck.. Then again from somewhere in Washington in July…Then today it was Stockton.. Thankfully the similarities were to much. Im glad I looked up the license plate before I sent it out to everyone I know! Whoever started this needs to get Jail Time! Whats gonna happen if this does occur, no one is going to beleive it…the poor child that gets hurt because of a horrible hoax!

It’s amazing in this age of the internet how easy it is to broadcast and then perpetuate a lie. Several peole have commented on how fast this sick joke spread. There’s a great quote from a character in Terry Pratchett’s book, The Truth (ironic, isn’t it?) where the main character says “A lie can run around the world before the truth even gets its boots on.” I think the quote applies here.

I live in florida and I got it jsut now, I was curious about where the boy was, and this was the first hit i got, This is ridiculous, because over a week ago there was a real Amber alert for 7 year old Somer Thompson down here in florida till they found her murdered; See, soon if these hoax ones keep going around noone will believe them, and future people and families like somer thompsons will not have support, cause noone will believe them..

Have received several variations here in Louisiana. I am registered at amberalerts. com and receive the real ones so I do spot the fakes right off. For starters they never request that they be passed along..
