Police in several states (correction: every state — see update) worked overtime yesterday and today to quash rumors about supposed gang initiation killings planned at local Wal-Mart stores. The rumors, which circulated all day Tuesday via email and text message in Valdosta, Georgia, to name one locale, were investigated by the city's Gang Task Force and found to be "not credible," Police Commander Brian Childress said.
Broward and Palm Beach County officials issued similar statements today, labeling gang initiation rumors still circulating in south Florida "hoaxes and urban legends."
One version of the rumor spreading via text message read as follows (verbatim):
FWD: Police are asking all women not to go to any Walmart tonight there is a gang iniation and three women will be shot this is not a joke pls fowardThe Times-Journal of Selma, Alabama noted that gang initiation rumors erupted there as well, culminating in a panicky phone call from a subscriber Tuesday night asking if it was true that hostages were being held inside the Selma Wal-Mart store. No such assault occurred, the Times-Journal reported.
Internet rumors naming big-box stores such as Wal-Mart and Target as locations for murderous gang initiation rites have become a staple of urban legendry in recent years. I'm not aware of any instances in which they've proven true.

I just got a txt. I’m in a suburb of Chicago. I didn’t think it would be true. The txt I got said it was confirmed on TV. Not sure what channel it was confirmed on. I couldn’t find anything relating to a TV channel broadcasting this on the internet. All I found was this and snopes.com saying it’s false. Not that I got to Wal-Mart anyway!
Sister in Arizona called to tell me a cousin in Edmond emailed them about it. They had heard it was to happen in Yuma and supposedly the info came from the border patrol.

THere was two shoot in the front entrance of the front doors of the O’Fallon, IL Walmart. Gang members walked up to a family of 6. They starting pushing they around. Mike (husband, 46) was shot in the face with a 9mm in left front of the left ear. THe police heard the shooting came over. THey had there guns drawn. THe gang members were shoot in the head. I work at what is considered the “Ghetto” Walmart, I had to work until 6pm tonight in total terror. Because I did not know it is a rumor. It is spreading around Minneapolis, MN too. It’s interesting how quickly things like this spread – as some people have been saying, it seems unlikely that something would happpen in small cities because no gang is everywhere, but obviously the only reason the rumor has spread to smaller places is that people are concerned for their friends. It’s too bad that nobody can know whether it started out as true or not, or where it originated… it is true that lots of gangs do have sects in big cities so I don’t think it can be completely ruled out but it does seem unlikely that they would carry out any original plans now..

I went to wal-mart in Pine Bluff arkansas a while ago and saw some young people in old cars with loud music and big wheels pull up in the parking lot and ran for dear life because i thought it was them.

This is crazy. I went from concerned to ticked off. I had just talked to my wife who was gonna go get pampers from wal-mart and then I get this txt. Now I find out that it aint even true. Not cool people, not cool.
Some of my friends here in Hawai’i got it. At the end of the day the vice principal sent out emails to all the teachers telling them to tell us students that she called the state security whatevers and they checked it out and told her it was not true and it was just some rumors going around the mainland.

My wife just got a message with this warning on her cell phone. I told her to relax and that I would look into it. From previous false emails regarding sick kids and the like, I knew that most of these forwarded messages are just plain old urban legends. I just typed in the threat and a whole swarm of hoax information popped up.

I recieved this text around 330 this afternoon on my lunch break, I’m in keokuk, iowa. A friend of mine forwarded this to me and said it was seen on CNN news on tv. I wondered how much truth there was to it, but still took precautions and steered clear of walmart when i got off of work at 8. But as i drove by, which i have to do to get to my house, walmart parking lot was pretty much empty. Never seen it like that before except on days they are closed during the year. I did notice throughout other comments left on here that at least police departments all over the united states are taking this somewhat seriously and are patrolling or even inside the stores keeping an eye on things…but rumors like this just give some people the need to do something so stupid…what is becoming of this world?????

its amazing how many people all over are being affected by this. I only got the message twice today (north of sa, texas)but it is still creepy (and sad) that technology has such a power over us. I think its def bologna. my friend works nights at the walmart in north dallas and she’s on tonight. She told me she was by the doors with no one to watch them. i told her that it was a rumor and not to worry about it. Well since we all given our opinions on this “Gang related Wal-mart initation” then let me tell u what I think: It looks to me like the only pple who stands to gain anything frm this rumor would be ALL OF THE WIRELESS PROVIDERS!!! Like At&T verison,t-mobile,and others.We all got charged for the txt being sent to us on our phones.I did a quick guess-timation and If we all got that txt and I am the 1,500 to psot a comment so multiply that by 30 cents (each time msg was sent)=$450.00! Multiply that by 2x’s totals approx.$900 and most of us got sent or recieved that tx way more than 2 times.Sum of u recieved or sent the txt 8-10 times. I am guilty…I also sent this txt to my family and friends. After I done the math in my head of the tx that was recieved by us few folks here I came up with $2,250 and I figured in 25 states (for example) not all 50 . I was trying to get a figure and someone that gets royalities frm each txt generated then they made way over more $56,000 in 8-10 hrs and required them to sit on their ass and do nothing!So u all go figure and let me know if you think I may be on to sum’thin? Please stop forwarding this email. It’s been on the news in my town (AL) and law enforcement are urging people to stop forwarding the message because it is spreading all over the country. I actually received the message while standing in my local walmart about 7pm last night. There’s nothing to the rumor, and no reason for the news stations and local news papers to have to spend their time and waste space in the paper to have to stop something like this. Anyone can make up ANYTHING and put it in a txt message, but if I sent a txt and said that BIGFOOT was real would you believe me? I think not…So why would you believe a txt message that was started by someone that you never met? After all, it was a FWD!

We have several problems here: Biggest problems is Walmart it self doesn’t have security or enough of it. Walmart is too dam cheap to get the right people to do the job correctly. And the keep the people who do a rotten job because they are afraid of ummm well you all know law suits. 2. Before the age of texting this type of stuff would have never made it across the country this quickly so who do we really have to blame the gangs or take a good look at yourselfs for passing it on. I believe that it is unwise to disregard these “rumors”, this is exactly the reason why the shootings took place at Columbine and the mall! No one believes it can happen until it is too late!If for no other reason, someone will get an idea and then act upon it just to substantiate it. I personally spoke with a VT State Trooper, said that he had not yet heard of the Supposed shootings in the area, this was last night, however this may be a rumor/hoax, whatever you like, but still you never really know in this day and age, you can never be to careful, and if this rumor is saying that it is going to happen this certain night, it wouldn’t be that night anyways, it would be a different night when no one is suspecting anything to happen, seriously that would be stupid….

I happen to know WalMart sells the absolut BEST lube in the world. I am going to defy the police warnings and go to WalMart tonight to replenish my extensive lube stock. If someone starts to shoot me, I will spray my lube at their gun and the bullet will be too slippery to shoot out and I will dodge it or maybe it will even slip out of the guy’s hand. Not just limited to the US – We live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and a coworker of mine got an email mentioning a similar situation – kinda threw us all off though because the email never stated a generalized location – ie all of Canada or all of Alberta – said that Calgary paramedics were on red alert due to the same sort of threat – we took it a little more seriously because it referred to the city directly… police here are looking into it further – hope it is just a hoax…
Southern California too! BIG time mass texting… I heard it everywhere. We were at Sea World people were talking about it around us and then about an hour later I got the text. I knew it was fake, heard it from friends on the east coast. But it was pretty sad to see how many people actually believed.
My friends mother sent me this txt. I was on my way to wal mart and turned around with the quickness. I didnt know if it was true or not, but someones mother sent me the txt. People are really lame and have nothing else to do with there lives. I stay in Ohio, i had no idea it got all over the country.

I’m not taking my children to walmart without my husband any more. I don’t think it’s a bad idea even if the rumors are not true.

Just think people do not go out as much and when they do it is to work or to shop. Where are the majority of people going Walmart. So odds are more deaths either accidental or intentional will be at the one place most people go. Not to mention their parking lots alone take up half of some of the cities they are in.
