Sports apparel manufacturer Lacoste, whose world-famous logo is built around the image of a crocodile, will roll out a new sneaker this spring paying homage to the urban legend about giant alligators lurking in the sewers of New York City.

The shoe features a black leather croc pattern with blue or yellow highlights and an etched manhole cover graphic on the heel.

A press release announcing the spiffy new release — part of Lacoste's "Limited Edition Crocodile Mythology Collection" — substitutes crocodiles for alligators, but in every other respect does justice to New York's favorite homegrown myth:
It has been rumoured for decades that young crocodiles brought back from holidays in Florida were disposed of down toilets once they grew too big or their owners got bored of them. Stories tell us that the crocodiles continue to live in the sewers growing to a huge size. Although many sightings have been reported none have ever been confirmed.

The legend is fancifully retold in an animated promo video on YouTube.
