The crew of the Discovery Channel's Mythbusters show detonated 500 pounds of ammonium nitrate in a quarry just outside Esparto, California last week, sending a shock wave through the small town that shook homes, broke windows, and gave many local residents the surprise of their lives.
The point of the exercise: to see if you can really "knock someone's socks off," according to the show's producers.
Though the blast had been approved by and coordinated with the Yolo County bomb squad, no advance warning was issued to the public in hopes of preventing a large crowd from gathering near the explosion site.
Citizens' reactions in the aftermath ranged from "It was really fun" to "They're fools."
No physical injuries or missing socks were reported.
