It's also untrue that the personalities of the main characters in the '70s cartoon show Scooby Doo, Where Are You! were based on the social reputations of Massachusetts' "Five Colleges" (Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke, Smith, and UMass Amherst).
As to whether or not students' test scores really do suffer if they walk through an area of the UMass campus known as "Grade Circle" before taking important exams, opinions vary.
