NRA: Rumor of Gun Tax Legislation an 'Old Distraction'

By , About.com GuideJune 3, 2009

Follow me on:

It's the year 2000 all over again for gun rights advocates, who've been passing around an old email rumor warning of a bill in Congress ("SB-2099") that would require gun owners to declare all firearms on their income tax forms and pay $50 per gun to the federal government.

The rumor "wasn't even very accurate when it was new," says an informational alert posted on the NRA's website last Friday. We can hardly blame gun owners for being fearful of moves by politicians to restrict, tax or confiscate their legally owned and used firearms. After all, the anti-gun campaign started in 1968: forty-one years ago. So it’s a hot button issue on both sides.

We CAN blame those who propagate rumors to incite either side. This is manipulation plain and simple. So I thank Mr. Emery and all those who help debunk and defuse this kind of propaganda.

Please keep in mind: while there are tragedies involving guns, these incidents are perpetrated by a few, not by the tens of millions of law abiding gun owners. There are more gun owners than automobile owners: and a lot more deaths caused by auto owners than gun owners. We, together as Americans, should work together to reduce all crimes. We won’t do that by singling out any group to bear the burden.

Neither will we do it by circulating fear inducing rumors.
