Finally addressing anecdotal reports circulating since the mid-2000s to the effect that using Zicam zinc-based intranasal cold remedies may cause anosmia (loss of the sense of smell), the U.S. Food & Drug administration today warned consumers to stop using three specific products:
  • Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel
  • Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs
  • Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, Kids Size (already discontinued)
The FDA also warned manufacturer Matrixx Initiatives to stop marketing the products without FDA approval.

My family of four adults has used the Zicam gel for more than 3 yrs with no problems. Zicam has worked quite well in stopping our head colds.

Well, it is only a warning issued by the FDA. You can choose to take it or leave it. Just don’t say we didn’t warn you.

I would like to know who did the study and who paid for it. What programs use it as an advertisor. These kind of things seem to be happening a lot lately

I have been using the nasal spray for years with no ill effect. Now that I have a cold, I am missing this product in a big way. Lozenges just don’t taste great and the sugar/artificial sweetener aggravate my sugar intolerance. I just cant win. Suffer away I am.
