UPDATED 03/26/10: The license plate #98B351 Amber Alert hoax flooded Facebook again yesterday and today as folks confused the months-old fake alert with a legitimate one issued Thursday on behalf of a 10-month-old Roseville, Michigan girl allegedly abducted by her non-custodial mother and her boyfriend. The missing girl, Rylee Alexann Folan, has been found safe — I repeat, she has been found safe — and the Amber Alert canceled. As of Friday morning, there were no legitimate Amber Alerts in effect anywhere in the U.S.

ORIGINAL POST 10/05/09: Text and Twitter messages falsely claiming a 3-year-old boy was abducted by a man driving a 2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse, license number 98B351, are currently circulating in California and Oregon. Police in both states say the plate number is invalid and no such Amber Alert is in effect.

Hit Indiana yesterday. I got several of them, but didn’t forward it on because I’m signed up to get texts from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children whenever there is an Amber Alert in several areas around me and I never got one from them.

My husband just sent this to me and the first thing I did was check it out. I sent my hubby a text to let him know it was a hoax and to inform his friend to check this stuff out before forwarding on this info. I agree that it’s ashame that some people have nothing better to do then to make seemingly tragic events up and get everyone involved because the unsuspecting receiver of this info feels like they are helping. I’m a believer that this info should be checked out and squashed before it gets out of hand.

In all fairness people.. I believe that people forward it because there are alot of sick people in the world that do harm to children and really feel that by forwarding it they are providing some help to maybe helping to find the child, i dont think anyone does it to spread panic, but more as a network, so people are on the lookout.

I was going to send it on and I thought that I would check the internet first to see if it is really true, I have sent some before and I have a few friends how work with Johnson County Sheriff’s and they sent me messages back that told met that I was wrong and those were fake, so I look from now on… it is not that hard to look on the internet to see if they are true or not!!

The only legit amber alerts I trust come from either the local police force (every province or state has an amber alert system) or codeamber.org I have found this website to be extremely reliable and they work in the US and Canada. They cancel alerts as soon as they get word that the child has been found and liaise with local law enforcement to help where ever the child was taken from.
Go to http://www.freeamberalert.org to sign up for legit, free text amber alerts. I haven’t got this particular hoax yet, but as a mother, I have to agree with all the previous posters who say that the moron who started this needs to take a long walk off a short cliff.

Social Network sites such as Twitter, Facebook etc could be used as valuable tools for real Amber alerts, I find false Amber alerts eerily troublesome.

Furthermore; As soon as I got this txt, I wanted to verify this via the internet. It took my less then 15 seconds to find out that this is a hoax. This is among many other that I get from people.

it’s hit facebook, apparently someone got it in a text and posted to the amber alert pages there, and some people have been sending it Via status updates. suggest people check the official amber alert sites for current reports before posting things like that.
Made it into ND as well. Just got the text message from a friend in WI. It was probably someone ticked off at their ex b/f, hubby, friend, etc, and decided to make something like this up in hopes that someone would find the car/plates and hurt that person driving it.
It is very sad all of the hoaxes around. But my friends and family are starting to become educated and are starting to check Snopes and other areas of the net to find out the real truth.
These are just like the flu. One person can spread it to many, but take some time and wash your hands and do some research, and stop the spread of this bacteria.
I am disgusted at the thought of people taking children, but its almost as disgusting that people would lie about it. Its a sin to lie, and the more these fake alerts go out the less people will care. Do not always believe what you hear.
I live in Iowa and have gotten this and other Amber Alert hoaxes over the past few years. Words cant describe how upset this makes me someone created this hoax. People a lot of people who get these messages just ignore them and dont even bother reading the whole thing.
It make me think of the “Boy Who Cried Wolf” fable my parents told me when I was little. After always yelling for help when he didnt need it people stopped paying attention and when he finally really did need help no on came and he was killed by wolves.
What is going to happen when someone sends a REAL Amber Alert and we miss the chance of actually saving someone.
If you get one of these messages DONT pass it along without finding out if it’s real or not. You are only making the worse by doing so.

Yep, just saw it on FB, politely posted that it’s a hoax and that MN currently doesn’t have any active Amber Alerts. Education is key in getting these to stop. Let people know where to go to check this stuff out before posting….

My first thought is, “How long has this been floating around?” and then, “Maybe they’ve found the kid,” followed by – “it’s probably a hoax.” Looks like we’re preaching to the choir tho – the ones posting obviously aren’t looking for answers.

I have been reading this alert for days now. I first saw it on FB and immediatly went to the amber alerts site and confirmed that it was a hoax. I posted it several times on my wall and no one is paying attention to it. I even had one gal say ” if you werent there then how do you know its not true?” I sent her a link to this site. Ugh! NO. Law Enforcement is NOT “overloaded” looking for missing children. The VAST majority of “missing” children are custody battles between parents, and the child is RARELY if EVER in any danger.
Petition your lawmakers to STOP the useless “Amber Alerts” as THEY DO cause resources to be used for situations that typically are not dangerous and solved in a matter of hours.
YOUR CHILDREN will NEVER be kidnapped by a stranger, it just doesn’t happen that often – much less often than the famous lightning strike statistics or other more rare events.
Just watch over your own kids, and stop the panic attacks.

I was really upset when I found out this was a HOAX, I use facebook all the time, and I didn’t think anything of it when I was asked to post this about a child missing, I thought it was strange however that they had the lisence plate # already, but I went ahead and posted it, I don’t take it lightly when I hear a child has been taken, I posted it to all my facebook friends because they can pray about this, and then next morning I went to my friend’s profile to see if there was any updates about the child and another person posted, on my friends wall,that all this was a hoax, I was happy to know that it wasn’t true then upset cause no one let me know the truth, I hope the people that started this get time in jail, other cases that are real could have been solved, but I will not post anything unless I find out it is true!

I’m in the UK and have just got this via facebook, I’ve made it clear that its is a hoax, there are truly some sick people in the world, and in the UK we don’t even use amber alerts.
I got it from my niece who placed it everywhere then asked everyone to post it. as a parent and grandparent you do what you think is right. However, not knowing you post it. Its only a parental protectiveness that makes us act now by posting. Then the rude people email/comment ya back. Not only are you embarrassed but the comments are insultings. Who’d think someone would make up a thing like this. even so, people should be kinder about the remarks.

This text has found its way to Port Charlotte, FL. People need to stop sending out false Alerts. This is a very serious problem and if this keeps happening then one day it will be like cry wolf.

I received this via a text message from a few friends today and as a father I immediately posted it to Facebook. It wasn’t until just a few minutes ago a friend commented the post wanting to know of the Amber Alert’s status that I did some digging. I went to the Amber Alert/ Center for Missing children site and looked into the alert. Well since it is a fake alert nothing came up so then I googled the alert and came upon this page. It is so horrible that someone would go to the length of creating a hoax such as this. Thank God for sites like this urbanlegends site to set the record straight.
Alabama usually is the last to get anything lol. Just got it two days ago by text from two friends. I didn’t send it. I figured is was fake. Whoever did this needs to grow up and get a life. It was altered a bit to say that it took place in Alabama.
It hit Oklahoma now, the town was changed to Delaware county. These people infuriate me! Ever time they sent out these false messages it just makes the real not seem as urgent.
Grow up people! There are kids out there that really are missing and these Amber Alerts need to be used only for that purpose!

Got it here in Indiana too. Just ridiculous. I told the person who posted it on facebook exactly what I thought of it. It took me less than 30 seconds to find out it’s fake.

just got it today 1/13/11 on facebook. honestly it looked all too familiar to one that i’ve seen before so i looked it up and here it is, a hoax. sad but not surprising, people have too much time on their hands.
Yeah we just got this again today on Facebook, something told me to check into it and sure enough it’s false. Why would someone keep reposting it? isn’t there a law to arrest the first person who started this? isn’t there a way to find out who started it and beat their boney behind?

Saw it on Facebook today. Referenced this website as well as the one for actual active amber alerts (http://www.ncmec.org/missingkids/servlet/AmberServlet), so they would know where to check it’s validity next time.
It really saddens my heart that are people out there sick enough to make something like this up. This is a VERY serious issue when a child or even an adult is missing. So many idiots have ruined what the internet should be used for.

You have to remember when most people get this on facebook, they feel as if they are just doing the right thing by notyfying others by re-posting. It doesn’t necessarily mean there forwarding spam intentionally. I personally at one point have reposted just feeling i was doing the right thing,prior to realizing that it was false.
