HOAX: Facebook Donates $1 per Status Update to Haiti Relief

A reader writes: "I keep seeing this note in status updates. Is it true?" The note says:

This status is being tracked, the owners of facebook have confirmed they will send $1 to the rescue fund for the Haiti earthquake disaster for every time this is cut and paste as a status. You only have to leave it for a minimum of 1 hour. Lets all do our bit to help.

Here's another version (verbatim):

Too All Members, if you believe in helping people lets do this: PLEASE NOTE that this status is being tracked, the owners of facebook have confirmed they will send $1 to the rescue fund for the Haiti earthquake disaster for everytime this is cut and pasted as a status. You only have to leave it for a minimum of 1 hour....

It's a hoax. Facebook has announced no such program, and considering the size of the donation the company would be obliged to make if a large percentage of its membership participated, they would have made a public announcement.

Facebook's Randi Zuckerberg did unveil a Global Disaster Relief initiative last week to "spotlight efforts on Facebook to help respond to disasters around the globe." There was no mention of a $1-per-status-change donation.

Donations to Doctors Without Borders and Partner in Health will go directly to the organizations on the ground and not towards the high salaries and ad budgets that Red Cross and other big agencies have.

Not ALL Facebook people are suckers!!!!!! I for one would not give because you are not always sure the money will get to where it should go. Besides you use paypal to do the donation and I don’t care to use paypal!!!!

Face Book users ARE NOT suckers!! Before I would give or even think about donating or even responding by c/c &p I would check it out. If you want to talk about yourself, then do that & don’t point a finger at others.

why not copy, paste & post even if there is a chance it might be true? No $$ out of your pocket & takes less time than sorting out whether or not it’s true.

@ac: The problem is that every hoax that gets passed along, no matter how harmless in and of themselves, encourage other people to create new hoaxes, many of which are not harmless. And let’s not forget how excited spam kings and phishers must feel every time someone falls for something like this.

Despite everything this episode atleast confirms one thing: that humanity is still alive & it also helped in spreading awreness not by money but by information which even is a much powerful tool.

Personally I’d love to see Facebook actually come down hard, on people miss using catastrophes like these. What if Facebook actually shut down there accounts. Is there really anything more morbid, then doing these status hoaxes about a disaster like the one we have in Haiti.

It’s really good to help the less fortunate BUT when arethe rich and powerful going to start helping out the Americans who need help? There are a LOT of Americans who are hungry and homeless and need help too. When another country has a crisis the entire population jumps to give money and food. The stars do it to get their name in print I think and I’m sure some do it because they truly want to help but please someone help our own people for a change. God Bless!

@RJ – this doesn’t show there is humanity; it shows there are people who are prepared to make hoaxes and people who still can’t spot a simple spam comment. Nothing more.

@ac – enjoy your spam.

(15) MG57 says:

You are right, this doesn’t show anyones humanity. Showing humanity would be actually doing or giving something, not just pasteing something and letting somebody else do the giving. It lets them think that they have helped without really doing anything at all.

I can’t believe people actually fall for these stupid hoaxes again and again. It’s so easy to spot the hoax. And why would someone create it in the first place? It’s wrong, it’s sick, it’s disgusting. People in haiti are hurting and someone’s made a cruel joke about it? I too would like the hoax tracked back to the creator and she him/her punihsed.

I take offense to facebook putting a backpack on my farm for Haiti. Now, I get mostly crap for that backpack, which i got rid of. If you want to help Haiti, do it thru the newsfeed and not one of the games. I do not care about Haiti, but now I have to tolerate my game being screwed by it. I am playing a game not raising funds for Haiti. This is supposed to be fun and they have made it a pain. It is being forced down the throats of people that are just trying to play a game to get away from the realities of life….

100 Days since Mr. Martelly is in power! Still no Government, should that be counted to evaluate the president himself or the Vote of the Nation, through this presidency. Concerning the Haitian Congressmen, do they realize in what circumstances that living the citizens? Then, the time itself might bring also an indefinite somewhat into these political masses. Where things should indeed be improved what offered by the tragedy of the 2010, to the protagonists’ smartness, as well as thought and money must spring the growth of the society!
