Posted this morning on the Official Google Blog by Eric Schmidt, Chairman and CEO of Topeka Inc. (formerly Google):
Early last month the mayor of Topeka, Kansas stunned the world by announcing that his city was changing its name to Google. We've been wondering ever since how best to honor that moving gesture. Today we are pleased to announce that as of 1AM (Central Daylight Time) April 1st, Google has officially changed our name to Topeka. It's a joke, of course. Google has a long (by Internet standards) history of April Fools' pranksterism.
Also today, Google U.K. unveiled a stunning new application to facilitate communication between pets and owners called Google Translate for Animals. Woof!
And in other news:
- Starbucks announced the addition of two new drink sizes, Plenta™ and Micra™. The Plenta cup holds a gallon of coffee.
- Gmail notified users of a temporary vowel outage (the letter "y" excepted).
- London's Daily Telegraph reports that Virgin Media is deploying an army of microchipped ferrets to troubleshoot underground broadband cable construction in the rural U.K.
- YouTube now offers bandwidth-saving text-only videos!
- Organic grocery store chain Whole Foods Market rolled out environmentally-correct action figures Eco Suave ("Hey baby, you gonna recycle that?") and Patchouli Pam ("Now with 6-foot aroma radius!").
- Today only, on the Ben & Jerry's U.K. website you can sample the world's first ever virtual ice cream.
- This just in: CNET's Crave blog reports that Swiss authorities arrested a would-be saboteur who attempted to gain entry to the Large Hadron Collider this morning. The intruder, one Eloi Cole, claims he journeyed back in time to prevent the massive particle accelerator from destroying the world as we know it.

The Google translate reminds me when there was a story on the news about commercials just for cats. You shouldn’t understand the commercial, but if your cats watches it they will. :p
For a brief moment, I believed the Starbucks’ April Fools posting. That is… until I actually saw the size of the gallon drink. Funny stuff!
Here’s a good April Fools joke:
The Worldwide End of Spam Occurred Today
End of Spam
I like Frank’s April Fool’s comment; it’s funny. What’s also funny is that I also kind of actually believed Google changed its name to Topeka, until I remembered it was April Fool’s Day. =p
Google had another April Fools day joke that most people probably missed. It was on their Google Voice page. You can see it at:
What a crock of BS!
