Benzene in Cars

By , About.com GuideMay 6, 2010

Follow me on:

A forwarded email alert circulating for the past year warns drivers not to turn on the air conditioner immediately upon entering a vehicle because certain interior components — dashboards, seats, carpeting, and even cardboard air fresheners — give off cancer-causing benzene fumes which may accumulate to toxic levels.

"So friends," the email beseeches, "please open the windows and door of your car — give time for interior to air out — dispel the deadly stuff — before you enter."

True or false?
