Protest Sign: 'We Will Shoot More Police in Arizona'

By May 8, 2010

Follow me on:

Help authenticate this image!

A sign held by one of the protesters in this viral image of a May Day immigration reform rally reads: "Give Us Free Health Care, Jobs, No Taxes, House, Food. You Owe Us America! We Will Shoot More Police in Arizona Until We Get Free!"

Despite the widespread claim that it was taken in Phoenix, Arizona, visual landmarks indicate the photo was snapped in Los Angeles, where a large pro-immigrant demonstration did take place on May 1, 2010.

So far no one has been able to authenticate the image, which many suspect was Photoshopped to alter the wording of the sign. Any information on its provenance, particularly with regard to locating an original, unretouched version of the image, would be greatly appreciated.

By blowing up the image I was able to see very apparent smudge lines between the signs. While I can’t verify the authenticity of the photo I am 99% sure that it is a forgery.

(2) Rick says:

Definitely not Phoenix! I think it is the Los Angeles Times building in the background. Look at how he is holding the “sign”. Doesn’t look right. The whole sign may have been Photoshopped in, at least maybe the bottom part, to obscure the sign the girl is holding. I wonder what the light green, light blue, pink and white t-shirts are that some people are carrying. Looks like a nice group of students. Whoever photoshopped in the inflammatory language has stirred up indignation, fury, anger and outrage on countless conservative websites. The image is circulating like crazy via e-mail. Doesn’t it occur to them that it just might be fake???

(3) PissedAmerican says:

It might occur to someone that it could be fake…. if only the sign were the slightest bit inconsistent with the attitude of these pillaging invaders. Yes, I said invaders. Immigrants ask permission to come through the front door to give their labor and talent in exchange for a niche in the American way of life and an opportunity to succeed. Invaders sneak in over the fence at night and take everything they can get their theiving hands on, bitching about the people they’re stealing it from every step of the way. People who want the benefit of the doubt shouldn’t act like a bunch of ungrateful marauders. If it weren’t so exactly true, we might suppose it could be fake.

Interesting attitude, given that it IS a totally fake sign – at least the part about shooting cops. You’re being manipulated.

Hey Rick, the way everyone is acting such as groups like La Race why would we consider it a fake. I watch a video the other day were a professor in LA was calling for a revolution that had the support of Hugo Chavez and others like him.
Again Rick can you please explain why I would consider this a fake when I am seeing countless gatherings such as this one I mentioned. Here’s an idea Rick maybe YOU should consider it NOT a fake.

(7) Alan says:

No doubt about it. The lower section of the sign was photoshopped in and not very well. Blowing up the image reveals very typical airbrush type splotches at the joint between the larger top sign and the narrower bottom sign.

Rddit – did you read this at the bottom of the link you posted?

It is worth noting that edges and areas red in colour are often depicted as brighter in the ELA tests. This due to the way the photos are saved by various programs. It is not proof that image was manipulated.

If you are unsure how to interpret the results, please do not claim the results of this tool as proof of anything.

(10) Saul says:

You can see the edges of the real sign behind the text box, which is completely flat in 2D. Someone dropped a text box over the sign and rotated it. Simple.

That explains the red ink, anyway. The black part of the sign reading, “You OWE us America,” could be real, and there’s no doubt someone might carry such a sign during a rally, and it might explain why the original shooter took the picture in the first place before it was altered with the red-texted box.

i mean the whole sign looks phony. there is no one out their asking for everything to be free. except me and i am not hispanic. i am a 3rd generation Italian American. my grandfather and grand mother were born in Italy. i’m not sure but i don’t believe my grandfather ever was made a citizen. he lived here from age 14 ’till death at 92″ he worked paid taxes and all that good crap. and spoke with a heavy accent. i remember everyone loved him. he did experience prejudice in his youth but he never did much about it except beat the pants off anyone who dared question his loyalty. all his children were educated and his grand children and great grand children are doing just fine thank you. how did you get here were you dropped from the sky? the only real americans are the american indians. we are just guests that use all the resources that are offered and we came from some damn foriegn country and stole the United States

(16) Marshall says:

I disagree. When you blow up the image you can clearly see that the bottom of the lower sign is curved across the stick. Also looking closely in the lower left corner you can see the fastener which adheres it to something across the back to secure it in place. Many people would LIKE for this to be a forgery but I think you are fitting the image to what you want it to say.

May 11, 2010 at 1:10 pm

Or more likely “Many people would like for this NOT to be a forgery but I think you are fitting the image to what you want it to say.”

(18) Rick says:

Important message from ALIPAC (Americans for Legal Immigration):

UPDATE 5/10/2010: please do not post or circulate the protest sign that reads “We will shoot more police in Arizona till we get free?” We cannot prove that is a fake, but several of our supporting activists feel the picture is a hoax and has been altered. You can see our full discussions here and make your own determination. Our ruling is that the sign is problematic and we cannot document a source, therefore it should not be further circulated.

(20) Tom says:

This image is being shared all over. Sure would be nice if the person who took the photo would come forward. I too blew up the picture. Not sure I am seeing this as an obvious photoshop. One thing that concerns me is the actual writing. If the bottom is photo shopped some serious work was required. One thing I looked for was anything unique. What I found that gives me pause is the R’s. An odd long somewhat horizontal tail. I hope this sign is photo shopped. I just am not sure.

(21) jay says:

notice the guy’s right arm is really strange looking, is it possible that the entire sign and arm has been added to the picture. It is so perfectly positioned for the camera also notice how disproportionate his left hand is to his right. Three knuckles appear to be larger than his entire other hand. I do not think that is a dimensional problem because they are apparently at about the same spot with respect to depth into the picture. just a thought

(22) Scott Erwin Gregory says:

Hate to say it (well hate may be too strong a word) but this actually looks like a courtyard near the Arizona Republic building, downtown Phoenix… right pavement, right trees, right street lamps, etc.
As to the sign, there are just as many clues to support its authenticity, as there are to refute it. The blurring and ‘airbrushing’ effects seen between lines of text and at the edges of the sign itself, under magnification, could just as easily be an effect of the JPEG compression process (and likely are, judging from my experience with file-compression software) as ‘photo-shopping’ handiwork. As another commenter remarked earlier in these comments, there are visual clues involving the shape of the lower segment of the sign that suggest unity with the whole. An analysis of the handwriting styles suggests the same author wrote both sign segments. In the background, there is yet another protest sign that seems to hint at an Arizona event.
If and until the photographer comes forward, however, there are, as yet, too many questions as to its authenticity to put one’s neck on the line over it.
Hope I helped confuse the issue, LOL!

(24) Kevin McCarthy says:

As to alteration: notice the handwriting generally slants to the left except for the words “America”, “shoot”, “more police in” and the last word “free.” Also, the letter “u” in the words “us”, “house” and “until” are each different in shape and lean. It looks altered to me.

(25) KnowItAll says:

As Jay says above, the arm gives it away. Look at how the arm is almost sheared off on the outside edge. Unless the guy has some serious defect with his arm, it looks fake to me. If it is a real defect with his arm, get this guy some Obamacare quick!

May 12, 2010 at 1:30 pm
(26) KnowItAll says:

Also, not to be argumentative, but there is a Mexican flag on the sign right behind Mr. Photoshop. The sign kinda flips over and you can see a Mexican flag on it. Conveniently you can’t see any of the text though.

(27) Jen says:

Anyone with any kind of photo program can save this photo, adjust the color settings and see that the sign is a fake. The backgrounds are different colors, and you can see where they removed some of the text from the top of the sign. All this does is spread hatred!

(28) Lazar Kleit says:

Whether it’s a fake photo, or the work of someone in the crowd trying to provoke a reaction, is unimportant. The sign, real or not, doesn’t reflect to the slightest degree the desires of the immigrant community, Hispanic, Latvian or Canadian. It is a fraud – Photoshop or otherwise.

We certainly don’t need this picture to know the sentiment of the demonstrators. Plenty of live footage of demonstrators throwing bottles and rocks at the Phoenix Police circulating all over the mainstream media, including MSNBC, CNN, Fox, and more. Those of us who have lived in Phoenix long enough know that there is a militant group of activists who believe we are in Occupied Mexico, that we owe reparations, or that we should move the border about 500 miles north. It’s the same crowd that wrapped themselves in the Mexican flag and paraded the streets of Phoenix when we passed employer sanctions. Go ahead LA and San Francisco, boycott AZ. You’re only hurting the very people you blindly think you’re standing up for. Idiots. The law only allow Arizona cops to enforce federal law by making it a state crime to break federal law. Read the law. It has nothing to do with race. Only the La Raza Unida is making this about race.

(36) CheshireMadcat says:

If you look closely you will see that the shadows are pretty much right under the people who are present. The if you look at the sign, you will see that there is no shadow being cast from the sign. From the angle of the sun, there should be a shadow being cast on the man “holding” the sign. The only darkness on him is what is being caused by his shirt.

Also look at the object he is holding in the left hand, the width of the fingers to object, the look at the handle of the sign, the right hands knuckles have a lot less thickness. Even the size of the hands look off.

May 15, 2010 at 1:24 am
(37) Mike V. says:

Save a copy to your own computer & zoom in on the sign with any image-viewer. It’s totally obvious that all the white areas of the upper sign have been blurred to hide what was written underneath. There’s no question it was manipulated. Just zoom in; that’s all. There’s no question this was faked.

As for who are true American citizens. Any one that belives that this country was fought and died for after the Brits wanted it to be a colony. Our for fathers were more intelegent than any politician or supreme court judge alive today. The American indians were defeated as were the Mexicans in wars to gain more land for the white man. The so called white man was made up of imigrants from all over the world that wanted to live in a land where they had the freedom to live as a free people. I could not control my parents, grand parents or great grand parents as to what they did in their lifetime but I can work on controlling my actions. An American should be an American first and then their secondary nationallity when describing their race.
As for this picture, to me it doesn’t matter one way or the other. If it is real it is someone with a warped attitude and if it is not real it is still someone with a warped attitude. Legals should embrace control of illeagles to protect their own families. I am sure there are a lot of illeagles that would make great citizens but we don’t need the bad apples. I heard on the news the other night that Phoenix is second, only to Mexico City in kidnappings in the WORLD.
Not trying to cause more arguments just stating my thoughts. Oh, by the way, I do have that right as an AMERICAN.

And that one anonymous person takes only one photo of this incredible sign instead of two or a dozen?

And that one photo is fortunately one where the sign is turned at a perfect angle – straight-on to the camera – so we can make out all the text in crystal clear detail?

Please.

Well, it looks fake to me. The one thing that I noticed that is very inconsistant: The handwriting of the black message and the handwriting of the red message were apparently written by two different people. I am not an expert, but when I compare the E’s, F’s, A’s, G’s, O’s and others plus the slants are two different. That does not mean that it is fake, but if it was fake, you would expect at least two different writers and that is one apparent fact that exsists in this photo.

(48) Blaise Gauba says:

I deeply suspect that this sign is a Photoshop job. Even though the English is perfect, as other website chats and blogs have pointed out, and that it is grammatically correct, one might also consider how this guy would be welcomed into a crowd of peaceful protesters. He’d probably be attacked even by his own people, at least forced to leave. And yes, I can find that location in Downtown Los Angeles. Also, as a Photoshop expert, I would have to agree that the bottom sign on the stick he’s holding looks like an add-on. Not so much to hide the female protester’s sign, but because the proto-fascist who faked the sign wasn’t finished spewing their hatred onto these dark skinned people. I find this whole anti-immigrant matter quite sad really and horribly biased, bigoted, and throughly racist. Why? Because I know of a LOT of White European Illegal Immigrants who live in this country such as the Illegal Irish on the East Coast. My sister’s best friend married an Illegal Irish Immigrant and she said that pretty much any town or hamlet yo stride into on the East Coast is brimming with illegal whites from Europe. I’ve met my fair share out here in Los Angeles working in the Entertainment Industry. Why aren’t these bigoted Minute “Men?” (are they really men?) going after the illegal European Whites living in this country? ‘Nuff said! Peace to all!

The shirt this girl is wearing in this link is the same that everyone was carrying around, I got a few myself. They were passed out from Altoarizona.com at the Arizona Capitol. The shirt says “Legalize Arizona, (in large print) comprehensive immigration reform now- altoarizona.com” If you look at the guy in the purple shirt, he has an A for Arizona but “RIZONA is gone. They were muted out to look like they just say LEGALIZE.. not the case.. perhaps someone should look into that fact, instead of the badly photo-shopped signs.

I have seen the original sign but without the cop killing thing at the bottom. I do believe it was at the Mayday counter protest in Los Angeles. I have been to most of the protests in Phoenix and aside from an occasional mispelled word by a kid, none of the signs have been that blatantly ignorant.

Nicely enough the shirts were all printed by American Apparel.

Why on earth would someone want to create such an image? That is a rhetorical question. Our government’s response to the mess is to encouraging anyone seeking FREEDOM to come join us. The comment about “Importing poverty and exploiting jobs” makes perfect sense in our great nation’s capitalistic economy. With the history of what the white man has done, it all makes sense; we’re out of Indians so we import Mexicans, and we don’t even have to lift a finger for that to happen. While, I am pretty sure this will be deemed photoshopped, I must say this is actually an attitude that some illegals do have unfortunately which is why it was written and why over 60% of LEGAL Mexican immigrants (gallup) in Arizona are against illegal immigration. Most of the illegals I have met in AZ, I live there, seem very peaceful, however, something does need to be done about the boarder. The majority of major crime in AZ is committed by illegals… over 80% actually. Pretty eye opening… But, this picture does looked shopped to me as well, unfortunately, though the message of free healthcare and free benefits, accurate just the same. It’s one of many rreasons they come here.
The police shooting thing I feel is unnessasary and inaccurate in most cases, though not all, but most.

I always research emails like this before I even think about sending them on. I have been burnt in the past. I also reply to people, even if they are my friends or family, when they pass on this stuff. When they complain, I tell them I’ll doctor up something about them and spread it around the internet. When blown up you can see “halos” or ghost images around the type characters: a bunch of pixels making borders around each letter this would indicate the lettering was done in photoshop.

I say we officially call it a fake. Even get an expert to concur that its fake. Then the only one who could truly prove its authenticity is the guy who carried it. If someone really was stupid enough enough to carry a sign like that, maybe he is stupid enough to come forward, identify himself, and get arrested for the making death threats. My guess is we will never see the real sign. But someone will identify the guy and the truth will come out.
I guess the point that SHOULD be made is that, One idiot carrying a sign with such an ignorant statement like that doesnt speak for anyone but himself…. anymore than one idiot wanting to burn Qurans on 9-11 doesnt speak for anyone but himself.

I use Photoshop and Fireworks in my profession. When I zoom in on the sign at just 400% it is clear the text of the sign the man is holding was altered.

I agree that the bottom part is fake, but give me a break with the top! Are you kidding me? You come to our country and want free everything that the rest of us cant get for free, tell me how that is fair in any way, shape or form! That is not right at all, go back to your country then if you are not happy with what you already get in ours!

That man did not write that it is someoneís sick idea of a joke. For those of you that believe it why? Do you want to blame someone so bad? Are you brainwashed by all you read? They can barley speak English much less write it. And the spelling is perfect come on are you that stupid. Someone sent me this today. I couldnít believe its still going around (over a year) and even worse that people believe it. Wake up and open your eyes the press can make you believe anything they want you too. I thought we were better educated and smart enough but nope people are still be controlled by the press. Itís sad and it makes me sick that they can not defend themselves. Most donít use the internet or read the paper. I am surprised they have blamed all the bombings on the immigrants theyíve been blamed for all the other crimes. We Americans are perfect we donít commit crimes we just blame them on someone else.

The email I got today said spread it around why spread trash & lies. That is becoming the American way I want no part of it!

The sign is very obvious that it’s Photoshopped. It’s a bad Photoshop too, not even remotely believable. It’s amazing at the lies and hypocrisy Republicans would go to, to lie to people to get them to vote Republican. Even those who always vote Republican just for the sake of Voting Republican should be outraged at this propaganda if they truly want an honest and free Amercia.

I’m an expert Photoshop artist and this is an easy one! First, The building behind the men in this picture is the Los Angeles Times Building in Los Angeles, CA right across from city hall.
Second, the font is clearly ballpoint pen on paper, handwriting size.
Almost well done – but FAKE!

Hey, people of Mexico, repent and come to Jesus Christ and repent of your sins and God will redeem you and receive you in United States and you shall be accepted in United State and be given American Citizen certificate and be welcome to United States. Repent of your sins and wash your hands from all of yours sins and come to Jesus Christ and worship God in spirit and heart. Come to him. Unless you do not come to the Son, you shall face the wrath of God. Repent unless the Lord punishes you. Oh, Mexico, repent of your sins and wash your sins and be clean of your hands and heart and come to Jesus Christ and the Lord will set you free.

Its a fake. Although the sign originally had a secondary placard attached to the bottom of the first one, the entire content of both signs was removed and replaced with both black and red lettering. tell take signs include a lack of distortion across the center of the signage where the handle would be located, a color variance at the left edge of the sign where the lasso tool was used to remove the original text, and a lack of shade variance across the face of the placards that would occur with a natural photograph.

the image was produced at a large resolution then reduced to a web scale to conceal artifacts.

Its better than your average photochop shop, but not much.
