Rumor: Pedophiles Started Facebook Cartoon Profile Pic Fad

By December 6, 2010

Follow me on:

A seemingly harmless Facebook fad that surfaced in mid-November with members urging one another to replace their profile pictures with cartoon characters somehow morphed into a serious crusade against child abuse, which in turn seems to have triggered a bizarre backlash in the form of a rumor claiming the whole idea was created by pedophiles.

Yes, pedophiles! You see, if everybody on Facebook changes their profile picture to a cartoon character, that will somehow make it easier for child molesters to contact children.

Make sense to you? Me neither.

As of this writing (early Monday, Dec. 6), the rumor remains completely unsubstantiated. I have yet to find a single legitimate news source reporting it as fact, despite the widely repeated claim that the info came from CNN, 60 Minutes, or some other such venue. If new information comes to light I'll post an update here, but in the meantime there's little reason to suppose it's true.

Update: A Facebook spokesperson has been quoted by the Huffington Post confirming that the pedophile rumor is false.

Examples of viral Facebook status updates posted Sunday, Dec. 5:

PLEASE READ!! So apparently the whole change your profile pic to a cartoon character was created by a group of pedophiles (child molesters). If children see pics of cartoon characters they are more inclined to add them as a friend. This is a method pedophiles are using to gain access to children. The story is supposed ...to air on CNN tonight! No good deed goes unpunished.. if your pic is a cartoon.. change
Did everone hear about the group asking everyone to change their profile picture to their favourite cartoon characters is actually a group of pedophiles. They're doing it because kids will accept their friend requests faster if they see a cartoon picture. It has nothing to do with supporting a child violence, it was on tonight's news, please copy and paste
IMPORTANT!!! people change your profile pics back to YOU cuz the group that told us all to change our pics to our fav cartoon characters were a group of pedophiles. They're doing it because kids will accept their requests faster if they see a cartoon pic, it's got nothing to do with supporting child violence. [check...... the news tonight... & pass it on

great article indeed! it really does drive me crazy how easy it is to get people to believe things when you use the word “news.” “It was on the news. It has to be true” um ok? what news source? haha!

(6) April says:

Annnd just as quickly as people were to flock to setting their profile pic to a cartoon (which, while a fun idea I have no clue how it helps fight child abuse much like other passive “awareness” on facebook) they will report that pedophiles started the whole thing…with no basis. Honestly, people are getting sheepier and sheepier. THINK before you post/do! Gullible brought to new heights.

(7) Not impressed says:

Just about as confusing as how the heck is changing my profile pic to a cartoon character somehow stops abuse. Seriously, was anyone not aware of child abuse and saw some pics and just found out there’s an issue out there!?

(8) Elias says:

I think it’s interesting that they were all so quick to support “child violence.” I, for one, am totally opposed.

December 6, 2010 at 1:58 am
(9) Kylie says:

If it were pedophiles wouldn’t they just change their own picture to a cartoon caracter to get kids to accept their friend request. How does it help pedophiles if everyone does it? Dont believe everything you read. Its just a harmless thing that spread out of control & some weirdo thought it was a conspiracy.

(10) Angel says:

It is good to know that so many would take time to stand up for a serious cause, and no matter who started it, Everybody who believed, believe in the power of prayer in so many numbers will make a difference. Everyone who became a cartoon (myself included) or not, Pray Gods protection on our Children & The pedophiles of this generation & the next meet their maker before ever abusing another child again in Jesus name. Crimes against innocent children r horrific & Worthy of Divine Punishment with the quickness. Think of ur babies and lets pray now and be a true super hero for the children.

December 6, 2010 at 2:12 am
(11) Lady Jai says:

Dear Elias,
it did not say support of child violence, it was in support against child violence, thats why people changed their profile pix to show support for that cause. RIF

(12) Sally says:

I have no idea who set up the idea, I did it becasue it sounded like a laugh, and brought back a lot of memories of a happy childhood. I suppose it would give people a better idea of how old you are by what cartoon you used, mine was obviously 80s.
There was another one on FB lately for Breast Cancer where all women should just post the colour of their bra, nothing else, and was just an in-joke I assumed this was more of a ‘raise awareness’ thing than a make money thing.

(14) ACZ says:

Don’t know but it sounds like it could be true… anyway now the rumors out I would probably guess some molesters will try to use it.. true or not true.
Even if we’re so used to using the internet doesn’t mean its safer today then it was in the beginning.. Its worse and I for one believe strongly the only way for this to change for our children is no access to internet without adult supervision under the age of 14. Facebook is definitely not safe. Cartoon character o not. This is 2010 and as it is child awareness month we should be aware of the fact that all abuse of children is just getting worse and worse. Can internet have something to do with it? or maybe the fact that no one really needs to take the consequenses of their actions anymore.. Things are just more accepted today. You reap what you sow.

December 6, 2010 at 2:29 am
(15) FeistyK says:

First, I wasn’t aware that there was rogue groups of pedophiles that organize with other rogue groups of pedophiles to brainstorm and execute ways to entice children into adding them. I guess they use pedophile finder to get each others addresses and organize a meeting….Furthermore, secondly, I wasn’t aware of ‘children’ even being allowed on Facebook. Sad, to say but if parents allow their children to be part of a social networking site, they should monitor their use and caution them on adding and posting.

December 6, 2010 at 2:36 am
(16) ACZ says:

Btw, the “wierdo” that started the rumor may be a mother to a victim child. I agree that it doesn’t sound logical that pedofiles would ask everyone to change so they get easier access when all they need to do is just change their own. But I’v seen people with adiction s go to serious lengths to get what they want. However the issue of child awareness is bound to make more headlines thanks to the one spredding the rumors. You are talking about it right?!.. But if there is any truth in the rumor I’d rather be gullible.

December 6, 2010 at 2:39 am
(17) Carol says:

well to me it makes sense that a kid would add you if you had a cartoon picture up. but how would that help a pedophile? only thing i can think is by everyone putting the cartoon pictures up it helps him or her to blend in more…. a form of hiding? making him or herself less obvious. they are sick !

December 6, 2010 at 2:39 am
(18) ACZ says:

There are groups of pedophiles and they know each other. They deal with each other. They usually end up living close to one another as well since they’re not allowed to live everywhere after they have been charged with a sex crimb against children.

December 6, 2010 at 2:46 am
(19) Carol says:

so by following this stupid post a cartoon photo up in place of your picture, you possibly could be helping the pedophile’s to blend in and get to children. give that a bit of thought.

(22) Chris R. says:

It’s super annoying though. I added real people as friends. Not Reptar, Doug, Rocko or any of the plethora of Disney characters I now see popping up on the facebook walk. :p

(23) dumpiii says:

the one who spread this is a major major probable pedophile asking everyone to change back to their original photos…. why? because he’s unable to determine now which kids to victimize…. bwahahahahahhahaha!!!!
i’d say the campaign, true or not, is so successful just by making this rumor post…..

way to go, child abuser haterzzzz… we rock!!!

and good luck, pedo!!! check out those who didn’t support the campaign, maybe they’re waiting for you….

bwaahahahahahahahaa!

i don’t see the link.
Why would changing one’s profile picture lead kids to accept a friend request from this pedophile group ?
These groups exist regardless.
Bad argument, I’m afraid, against a good cause!
Actually, these kind of articles are exactly the ones that draw the pedophiles attention…Don’t you think ?

December 6, 2010 at 3:30 am
(26) Kimmie says:

Lol I think it’s so funny how anyone could believe all these stupid rumors I mean come on, child molesters?? Really?? I think that it’s just something fun to do!! Trying to find pictures of old cartoons that none of my friends or family didn’t already have was a lot of fun!! Regardless of if it was a few friends who started this versus it being child abuse awareness it was fun, people get so worked up over every stupid little thing these days!! I also agree with one of the other commenters on here about if a child has a facebook account then the parents should be monitoring anyway they should also change the privacy settings as well and make them unsearchable!!

December 6, 2010 at 3:33 am
(27) Lexie says:

First off all, it makes complete sense to me. Everytime im on facebook and some random old guy tries to add me, obviously im going to deny, but if im a little kid, and someone with Courage the Cowardly dog tries to add me, i’d be like “hell yea!”
& Second, the whole picture thing for child abuse , it’s the stupidest idea i have ever heard in my life. If you wanna help child abuse, and dont sit at the computer on facebook, go down to a charity or something. Changing your picture isn’t going to do anything.

December 6, 2010 at 3:36 am
(28) Stephanie says:

I changed mine to a cartoon pic of Rudolph’s girlfriend, Clarice a couple of weeks ago because I think she’s cute and I thought it would be appropriate for Christmas.
I personally don’t think “children” should be on FB anyhow because of internet predators. I’m a huge Chris Hansen fan.
Merry Christmas, everybody!

December 6, 2010 at 3:47 am
(29) Roni says:

I would think I you have a child old enough to have a Facebook profile, their parents are smart enough to monitor their childs list of friends and not allow them to friend any one they don’t know, and if they are not monitoring the childrens internet use then they are irresponsable parents.

(30) ForTheLawlz says:

Why should kids even have facebooks?

December 6, 2010 at 4:16 am
(31) JD says:

I’m not surprised. Pedophiles will do ANYTHING to lure innocent children. It’s just too bad that many of us who saw this and thought it was for a worthy cause were duped into changing our profile photos into cartoon characters just to attract children to Facebook.

Now, you can’t label someone a pedophile just because of a cartoon character as a profile picture (there are may 18-30 year olds who would have put a cartoon character as their profile photo for nostalgia).

Yes, it is sad many us on Facebook were duped into this scheme, but it doesn’t mean everyone is gonna accept the friend request of a child just because the child thinks someone’s cartoon profile picture looks cool.

It’s also the responsibility of the parents to see who their kids are talking to (plus kids under the age of 16 shouldn’t even be on Facebook anyways because of the risk of them talking to pedophiles).

December 6, 2010 at 4:40 am
(32) Crazy Man Dan says:

Stupid rumors. Seriously, does anyone really believe this? Obviously, someone thinks if you have a cartoon character as a profile picture you’re a pedophile. If someone wants to have a cartoon character as their profile photo, I say let them do it. Besides, even if a kid tries to add someone as a friend, they can always deny the kid’s friend request.

December 6, 2010 at 4:40 am
(33) Natalie says:

I don’t know the truth behind this but I do see that if everyone has a cartoon picture children may see no harm in adding someone.
However as a mother I think the bottom line is

WHY ARE KIDS ON FACEBOOK????

Im not sure of the age you are suppost to be to join but I for one would not allow my Children to be on the site!

December 6, 2010 at 4:53 am
(34) Jess says:

I am going to ask you to think for a second, when everyone changes there profile to a cartoon, someone sends a friend request to a child “Hey I like spongebob to lets be friends”.Some kids WILL add these people and yes some adults will to with no questions asked.
Now think some seedy looking man adds you and no comment, you automatically reject it.
Paedophiles will do anything to lure a child. This changing your display picture to a cartoon just made it easier for them to get accepted by children because kids think “oh it’s just someone with a cartoon like me” Though I wouldn’t let a kid on facebook, it happens and paedophiles know this. They prey on their innocents.
Also if you think about it, what does changing your picture to a cartoon character do for children in abusive situations? People know about it, some will do nothing and others will actually help the child. Changing your picture does nothing to help these children!!! There are awareness days each year to make sure people know its not ok to harm a child. Changing your picture does nothing but help paedophiles gain access to these kids.

(37) Anthony says:

Ok I see the logic of oh look its Sponge Bob lets be friends but then again, what difference would it make if EVERYONE had a cartoon?? Peadophiles are usually and unfortunatly very smart, I dont think they would use there own names on facebook and why try add people one on one, They would probably be the ones to start Groups that attract kids not make you change a stupid picture!!!! They are everywhere and the scary thing is it could even be someone you know, Your brother, sister, father, uncle, cousin!!!
Like one of the comments said, Since when do Peodophiles work together in groups, Is there like a bar where they meet up once a week and talk shop??? Please man, changing your pick to something is harmless, I mean when its world cup time people normally change their picture to their country flag, so now is that another group of Peodophiles trying to “blend” in cause if kids see everyone is doing it they will add them based on the fact the person is from the same country as they are so its “safe”!!! I.E. People DONT EVER CHANGE YOUR PROFILE PIC AGAIN CAUSE IT COULD BE A PEODOPHILE TRYING TO STALK YOU!!!!
Arent there more important things to worry about than this??

December 6, 2010 at 5:52 am
(38) conrado bais says:

It should always be GOD’s INVASION and not cartoons invasion. Well in fact others cartoon promotes violence. Sometimes cartoons can be a way of why children cannot give enough time to something beneficial like study lessons and prayers.

(41) Gerri says:

So the people who have a problem with this, get over it. It was a fun thing with a goal to have every profile of fb a cartoon character. Do you actually believe that the pediphiles out there put thier 40 year old mug on thier fb profile in the first place, I think not. They manage to intise children by pretending to be the age of their choice of prey. May be whoever started this rumour should change thier profile pic to a cartoon and take the time to become aware of how these people actually work. And for God’s sake if you have children, learn how these people target kids, that is what this is really about.

December 6, 2010 at 6:27 am
(42) Val says:

I posted a cartoon pic! My sisters and I really enjoyed seeing what everyone picked :) I know there is a lot posted about this being a scam, but I didn’t associate it with any particular group, I did it for fun and to help awareness of child abuse. If it put a smile on people’s faces and made them hug their children an extra time this weekend, then what harm did it do? Even if just one person got the message to not abuse their children, then again I ask, what harm did it do? Being taken back to our childhood was a lot of fun and who knows, maybe someone who was trying to figure out whether to report an abuser did so this weekend. It’s just amazing how something so harmless, got turned into something so horrific!

December 6, 2010 at 6:29 am
(43) Jenni says:

If a “child” chooses to accept a friend based on their profile picture they obviously have not been given the skills to determine wheher they should look further into who they are accepting as a friend. Surely parents should be monitoring the younger child’s friends list, I am on my child’s friend list and certainly would be interested to know about any strange new friends they accepted, in fact I check out any friends they make. Safety begins at home with parents.

I am a step mother of two kids, 9 and 11. Their father and I let them have Facebook accounts. We told them never to add anyone, and if they claim a request is someone from school, we check out the person, first. We have access to their passwords. They only have these accounts because of all the games. Accounts can be deleted. I’m so sick of all these damn liberals who think that children should live sheltered lives and shouldn’t have a Facebook account for whatever dumb reason they come up with.

December 6, 2010 at 7:04 am
(49) Sue says:

This is illogical, irrational, makes no sense, and the hoaxers know this. They create these rumors because it will cause panic and controversy. Having a cartoon as your profile picture does not make it easier to be accepted as a friend, and even if it was (its really not) it would make no difference if other people changed their profile pictures to cartoons anyway, meaning this is yet another baseless rumor that offers no evidence or reliable sources to back up its specious claims, and is designed simply to waste peoples time. Children should not be on social networks anyway, Take responsibility for your kids. Send them outside to play and let them use their imagiations.

This will probably get a lot of hate towards me, deleted, and people assuming that I am a pedophile which I am not. But I am really angry at the fact that a lot of people do not understand that there is a difference between a pedophile and a child molester/predator. Not all pedophiles go out and prey on children and take advantage of them, in fact some even kill themselves because of their attraction that they can’t help and because society deems them as the worst people in the world when they haven’t even done anything yet.

In my opinion, it’s wrong to rape/take advantage of/molest anyone of any age regardless of how old either person is. As long as the fantasy stays in their mind and they can get their needs taken care of without harming anyone, then I see no reason why they should be considered child molesters.

That is all. You can express your hate towards me but I probably won’t check back here.

I saw this comment too. I participated because I liked the idea of using a cartoon character as my profile pic and will probably continue to do so. I didn’t really buy into the “change it back because it was started by Chester the Molester” because it didn’t state what “news” it was on, where, what time, etc. We all need to THINK for ourselves and make our own decisions. We are NOT sheep!

December 6, 2010 at 7:56 am
(57) Stwoods78 says:

I didn’t believe it for a second, and when I posted a status asking for more facts no one could give me any. And for those who don’t feel changing our profile pics didn’t do anything for child abuse your wrong because it did do something. It woke everyone up to become more aware of the fact that it hasn’t gone away, and somewhere a child is being abused. I think it was a great way to become aware, and also to reconnect with our own childhood when cartoons were actually good, and we weren’t subjected to adult swim like kids today. Shame that some took a good thing and turned it into something ugly.

(58) Trisha says:

People are so naive, no doubt in my mind it was some housewife/mother who started this whole rumor. Although the organization had no plot for the attention, they received over 90,000 reviews and got tips on kids being abused. It was a great execution whoever started it!

@mrs.T….here is an update to your foxnews article….UPDATE: On Tuesday, Sept. 29, following the publication of this article, NAMBLA spokesman Arnold Schoen replied to a request for comment that was emailed to him six days earlier. Schoen wrote: “If you really investigated, you would learn that actually we have never set up any pages on Facebook. And we certainly haven’t ever used facebook to connect with our members, to find or exchange photos, to “hone predatory behavior:, or to “identify, target and reel in child victims. This is a wild fantasy boogeyman FoxNews is holding up for their fans.”

also that article from fox news was from Sept. and it said nothing about the cartoon campaign. I don’t know why people have to try to take something that people are doing to try to make an impact and turn it negative. My niece and I call these people life ruiners. apparently their lives are dull and empty so they have to do what they can to ruin the good in other peoples lives to make theirs more exciting…..lol

(62) Jana says:

I think it’s funny that people can’t THINK for themselves. I changed my picture for the FUN of it and posted that – to change it to have fun with a childhood cartoon memory. This morning I have friends that jumped on the bandwagon about pedophiles and changed their pictures BACK AND reported that it was because of the pedophiles. Hell, if it were THAT easy to find pedophiles, I’m sure the POLICE would encourage adults to change their pics to cartoons..so they COULD catch them easier.

DUH, why can’t people THINK for themselves?

what amazes me is the number of people who are commenting and have not even read this story! There are predators out there, but what this story is saying is that the RUMOR of pedophiles starting this movement is FALSE!!

(64) Lisa says:

why would u post this so late… the whole “changing profile pic to cartoon” is untill dec 6. .. and JUST now they are posting that it might be pedophiles??.. if people are really into this stuff, they are going to change it back to their face.

(65) Jolina says:

I totally agree. I haven’t seen anything else on the news or anything. Besides, if they wanted to get to kids they could still have THEIR profile pics as cartoons… having ours as whatever we want wouldn’t help them. I don’t think it makes any sense and as soon as I saw someone post this I knew it was fake.

I’m guessing whoever started it either wanted to start drama, ruin peoples fun OR just see how much it would be passed around. people are challenged, I swear.

December 6, 2010 at 9:26 am
(66) Jolina says:

Also, the whole point of changing your profile pic is to show support for those kids and show you are against it… will it stop child abuse? NO. But people are so challenged they are like “how does this have anything to do with child abuse?” or “I don’t think changing my profile pic is going to help anyone”

Its like wearing a pink ribbon for breast cancer awareness or wearing something saying “support our troops”… its not going to stop it. its to show support. some people are so stupid I swear.

You have to be thirteen years old to have a facebook account and I don’t know many thirteen year olds who would be baited by a cartoon character. Besides, does any careful parent not check on their child’s page to see their activity? These “pedophiles” are not forming facebook groups and holding meetings to find sneaky ways to get to our children. Ridiculous.

People have become sheep, and I recently had one of the people that always reposts spam/viral status messages. Truthfully these messages are just spam. the spammers just save time and energy by letting us send it out to everyone else for them. But I will say this. 99% of people who do this are most likely bored with thier lives and feel that following the trend makes them feel more like a part of the cool group. They just won’t think on thier own. Maybe we’ll all figure it out someday. I hope so.

It makes sense to me since my child is ten. All the changing settings on FB leave half of these kids with their phone numbers and address readily available for “friends.” Not to mention so many of them accept friends requests with no discrimination, because the goal is to have more friends then everyone else. It terrifies me to know that even if this was started to stop child abuse, a pedophile may use it to their advantage. So I agree, no pic for me. :) Thank you again!!!

Look guys, changing your profile pic to a cartoon is never meant to stop child abuse alone. If changing my profile picture to The Thunder Cats reminds me of my childhood, that is great. I think the whole idea is to remind people of what it is like to be a child. To remember that there is a problem with child violence is the important aspect of this stunt… Most of you guys don’t realize how easy it is to forget this. Most, if not all, who participate will most likely forget in a week or two and continue with there lives, but some will realize the problem is to large to be left forgotten. Those people will find there own way to raise awareness… It is a chain of ideas that lead to a solution!!!!

According to Facebook “rules”, you cannot sign up for a Facebook account if you are under 13. It appears that quite a few parents are allowing their children to lie about their age in order to have an account for all the “games”. I say it all starts with the parents—keep on eye on your children and monitor what they do. Don’t allow them to be on social networks if they aren’t really old enough to sign up for an account. It’s not rocket science people.

(92) anonymous says:

I’d like to make a comment on the people that said,”how does it STOP child abuse”.. Actually the movement was not to STOP but for people to be AWARE that it exist. And by posting a picture of your favorite childhood cartoon character it brings back memories and also makes you think about children at that age who are being abused, daily!

The messege brings the subject to light and for the people that are doing it for stupid reasons or possibly don’t understand, it just shows your mentality. Honestly I don’t think a child molester would really use something like “changing a profile pic to a cartoon” as an attraction to lure children when he can just get a picture of ANY child and post it as his/hers. I for one would tell my children when they are old enough to go social networking that if it is not someone they know, then pay no attention.

The whole deal, I felt that it was just a way of taking a trip back to memory lane and being thankful to be here today weather you were an abused child or not. I for one, was. But I am thankful for the life I have now and my 4 outstanding children. I could not imagine anything happening to them. And by me chnging my picture I let everyone who knows me that I’m happy that I’m no longer in the situation and my children will never have to go through the horrific ordeal. There’s meaning behind everything you do, we don’t have to change everything to negative all the time! Think positive, and everyone take care. <3

When I first learned about this rumor I immediately doubted that it was true. I am 22 and when the AOL first came out I was allowed on the internet but my mother made sure that I was behaving on there as well. Besides I don’t think a pedophile needs cartoons to lure children over facebook. It’s sad that something that is suppose to bring awareness for good can be turned into something horrible because of some he said she said BS. Some people really need to think with their head.

I ended up here after my h.s. daughter texted me from school after she attended an assembly about cyberbullying where this cartoon character/pedophile connection was discussed. She had changed her profile picture to a cartoon character over the weekend and said she was going to change it back because the speaker said the awareness campaign was started by a pedophile group. BTW, the person speaking at the assembly was an assistant county district attorney. Too bad he didn’t use his investigative skills and resources to check out this rumor before spreading it to an entire high school. A much more valuable lesson would be to make these kids understand the dangers of accepting friend requests from strangers, regardless of whether they look like a 50 year old man or spongebob! How about addressing privacy settings while they’re at it?

I’ve probably changed my profile picture one hundred times. A number of the pictures were cartoon characters. I also change my pic to a flag on Flag Day, a soldier on Memorial Day or Veteran’s Day, etc. I’ve put up yellow and pink ribbons to support causes, a thin blue line to support the police, and a number of others. If I change my profile picture in response to a post or a cause, it doesn’t make me anything. I’m on Facebook to relax and have an enjoyable time. People can analyze my motives all they want. I don’t mind a bit.

It really doesn’t matter whether the post is true or not. I wouldn’t post a cartoon character pic, b/c I see absolutely no connection how doing so prevents or assists w/the prevention of child abuse. The organization that was originally said to have started the cartoon character trend denied putting out the initial post. If you are so upset at the people who actually believed this rumor, how do you feel about those who actually believed that a Child Abuse prevention agency started the trend and that by posting a cartoon character they are actually assisting with the child abuse problem. Post a child abuse prevention/reporting telephone number, Post child abuse agency contact information, Mentor, Donate, Volunteer… Now that’s support.

(100) Jere says:

Funny thing about anonymous movements: as people try to figure out who’s responsible – if a theme is mentioned, those participating AND those watching in wide-eyed wonder are engaged in something positive – TALKING ABOUT IT. This cartoon cause is Preventing Child Abuse – and the fact that the conversation is taking place can’t help but make a difference for those who matter most: our children.

Think about it – who would like us to STOP talking about it?

If anything, the pedophiles started the pedophile rumor to get us to shut up.

December 6, 2010 at 1:13 pm
(101) DeeAnn says:

(103) Tasha says:

Actually, I agree with Jere. I have read several blogs and blog comments about this and have seen where it got plenty of people to think, and to donate to the cause. Even those who did not, at least for a short moment, they thought about it, even if only long enough to say “ok, I’ll bite”, and look for their cartoon image. Top that off with this new rumor about pedophiles and you have even more people thinking, again, about child abuse. I’d call that AWARENESS in a nut shell. And that is all the original message stated it was supposed to do.

As for children being on facebook, yes there is an age requirement, but many parents make pages for their kids or allow their kids to change their age and join. I admit, I am one of them. It gives my kids a chance to connect with family members who live far away. BUT, I watch everything they do. My daughter is now even allowed on the computer unless I, or my boyfriend, is sitting right behind her. If we keep close tabs on what are kids do on the internet, like we should do at all times, then predators won’t get through, simple as that.

I agree, protect the kids and who better to do it then their parents, family members, teachers and friends. This blog was to discuss the rumor that a pedophile group started this carton pic movement.

We are all here discussing our views on that situation not pedophiles in general. Since the conversation has changed I might as well chime in.

Anyone with common sense knows the dangers of the web, children shouldn’t even be allowed to social network and if you are one a those over protective, paranoid parents and you have a young child networking then you need to put an end to your misery and take them off the web entirely and stop making false accusations.

Child abuse is in all forms, physical, emotional, sexual, etc. Again something that was so innocent as showing awareness for child abuse gets blown up into this huge frenzy with no actual proof that is was a pedophile group targeting children, turned it into a huge controversy and again is making social networking look bad.

Come on seriously sit and think about it.

The original message has an important part of it not the mentioned in the article itself.
At least the FB messages *I’ve* seen.

Those specify that people change their profile pics to a cartoon **from their own childhood**. That will essentially reveal the persons age.

I don’t know who started it and it’s fine if adults want to do it but minors will also do it and could wind up exposing their youth and make them more visible and vulnerable to predators.

There wouldn’t be a problem at all if it weren’t for that one part.

Kids add people they know, people with alot of mutual friends, or people who look familiar not just cuz they have a cool profile. like seriously? Alot of you act like everyone under the age of 16 is 6 years old. Kids have common sense and if you are that worried about your kids being abducted by a pedophile then don’t let your 10 year old have a facebook! Most kids who have a facebook and they are in 5th grade or younger have like 60 friends. They usually know all of these people or they are their friends older sisters or their sisters/brothers friends.

This is coming from a 14/15 year old who knows how kids act on facebook. And having complete control over your childs facebook is just going to cause them to make another facebook and do more secretive stuff just to defy the parents. I know this for a fact

think about it, little kids do have facebooks, like my 9 year old brother. and if he were to see a cartoon as a display pic, he would think it’s some other little kid or something, therefore giving the person a chance to have info about that little kid.

You know what… this is just something small got blown out of proportion. I changed my picture to cartoon character too. It brought back lots of good memories and my friends and I had lots of fun because we enjoyed our childhood and we want all children to have a good childhood, what’s wrong with an awareness? whether it started with a small idea or somewhere else… I hugged my kids several times and kiss them several more just to remind them that I love them and damn those ever touched any child. If you ever touched my child, you’re death!!!!
it’s facebook competitor that got all upset because FB’s more popular now as a social media site, that’s all. Relax, have good faith and enjoy the Holidays.

Well I didn’t because of that it was to help against child abuse. But it is a sensible light on the subject about molesters to get at the children and very wrong and disgusting. hmmm., i think you miss the point., the thing is they change the profile pics because they concerned about children., and that is the reason they easily believe about the pedophiles rumors., stupid., but true., just a concerned citizen.,

(139) David says:

everyone saying that is false. the idea is that kids are more llikely to accept a friend request from a cartoon picture than a forty year old man picture. the point is, this started not by pedophiles, nor as a movement against child abuse. the earliest mentions found (yes, there are people who research these kinds of things) are from greece, saying to change the profile pic for fun, in an attempt to get everyone to change their profile pic. no matter what, its also make your favorite pokemon your profile pic month, and that trumps everything.

How the hell do I know what people are thinking? because of the countless statuses saying “why does everyone have cartoon profile pics”.

You dear, have too much sympathy for the world apparently, and believe everyone is in it for a cause.

Everyone on facebook just copied each other, a ton of them even had no clue what it was for, they just thought it was the cool thing to do.

I’m calling everyone that put up a cartoon through this method (there are many) a moron, but apparently you are a moron for thinking I call child abuse victims morons.

you only told me to take my head out of my ass because you are angry, angry for no apparent reason? No because you are one of the people that did it for no cause, because there is no other reason to backlash.

To the people wondering why the hell we’re doing it if it ‘doesn’t stop’ it anyway. It’s the same reason people buy the ribbons for breast cancer and etc. It’s the notion and support. Same as the reason you wear a poppy on remembrance day.

Rick, the key word in what you just said is “buy”. We buy ribbons and we buy poppies. The money goes back into the cause. The reason some people get upset at this “campaign” is that a lot of people are supporting a cause without actually donating or doing anything. Most people probably spent more time choosing their favourite cartoon and finding a pic than they did thinking about the cause in question.

(160) Ria says:

Firsty, facebook is a social networking site where you are only supposed to add FRIENDS. People you know. And if there are kids out there adding every Tom, Dick and Harry because its ‘fun and gets their number count up’ then maybe their parents should not allow them to go on it. Like everything it should be used responsibly and and that age, children are not responsible. They are still learning, so it is the parents job to teach. I know if I were a parent I’d be monitering everything they do on the internet should they be under a certain age.
This whole thing has been blown out of proportion. It would be a great idea if it supported children but even if it doesn’t it’s still nice to see everyones favourite childhood characters and happy memories.
As for the paedophile grooming on facebook? Well children shouldn’t be allowed on it under a certain age anyway unless carefully monitered, especially in this day and age!

(163) Rae says:

You know I am guilty of assuming what I saw re the aftermath of everyone changing thier pics to support awarenes of child abuse to help aid in the crusade to end it….I thought it really may have been started by pedophiles, but I allowed that thought to grow into a possiblity because I have worked with pedophiles in the past and juvenile sex offenders and many of their targets were via the web – a social network page where they established sum kind of relationship with a kid or thier victim..why would everyone else changing thier profile pics benefit them? Well, in many ways it wouldn’t but in sum ways it might – it makes the virtual world appear safer, that the person behind the profile is safe – esp. if more ppl are doing it or have such pics up…etc. There is NO POINT to try and disect the mind of a pedophile…it’s sickening and incomprehenisble…I still have a very difficult time with it – yet its my line of work…counseling and trying to rehabilitate these ppl…honestly, adults are incurable – juveniles however – they have a chance of being reformed through rehabilitation simply because NOT ALL of these juveniles have fully developed cognitively and therefore are more apt to accept change and learn healthier behaviors…that’s a sidenote to this whole issue….I hope and pray that this whole thing was a hoax (regarding it being started by pedophiles) but professionally speaking, I wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t….

(170) Jypsie says:

My thoughts exactly when this idiotic rumor started about pedophiles. I can’t believe that so many supposed educational people would believe such a rumor. LOGIC people! Logic! THINK before doing! Research before sharing BS!

The purpose of this cartoon campaign and other such campaigns on Social networks is to REMIND people and to CONTINUE YOUR AWARENESS while having fun with the games.

When the cartoons were posted on thousands of profiles, people started reminiscing about their childhood as well as discussing the tragedy of the children who were/are abused. It brought people together even if just for a little while. It motivates some people to donate their time or money to such funds.

The BRA color campaign was also for awareness and many of the women who played that little game are survivors of breast cancer.

Some of you may think these posts and little games do not HELP but you are wrong. It brings a little joy into people’s lives and let’s them know that others really do care.

Some may just share these posts but others do more than share them. They DO SOMETHING to help! They volunteer their time. They donate money and/or they keep a watchful eye. They support the cause in any way they can.

I’m a survivor of abuse and when I see so many people who believe in a cause, it brings joy to my heart. It lets me know I am not alone and that someone does understand and care about me. It also lets me reminisce of the happy times (though little there was), I did have as a child.

So Let’s get them cartoons back up and show your support.

Thank you!!

(173) Lee 'Spikey' Nethersole says:

OK, lets stick to the facts here. It never claimed that changing your picture would fight or change child abuse, it was simply stated as as a way to show your support for activities that end child abuse. If you think thats worthless one must assume that you don’t ever wear poppies in November, never applaud at concerts or put up christmas decorations in december.

beyond the basic method of showing suport, sympathy, appreciation or basic folowing of a tradition (to explain the above examples for those having trouble) all those people who did change their profile had to potential to think about the subjet. That is something charities desperatly struggle for (and why they blow so much of their tight budget on advertising). So with one free post on facebook the awareness of a certain cause was improved dramatically. If only one person though about donating a few pence because of that little stunt it was 100% succesful.

If you are going to bitch about people not using logic, probbaly a good idea to use soem yourself.

People it isn’t the greasy old guy wanting to friend your child, niece, nephew or friends kid that you should be looking for. It is ANY ADULT who wants to have a personal relationship with your child without your knowledge. Because the other scary statistic… 89% of child sexual assault cases involve persons known to the child ~ 29% of child sexual abuse offenders are relatives.

The Facebook campaign has caused me much trauma and dark depression. This apparently is a common ruse used by these types. Story-book characters have been used to attract the very young victims.

(185) Steve says:

Criminals of all sorts are skulking on the internet. Any parent who allows their child access should supervise that access and use porn blockers and other safeguards to make sure the child is protected from any potential harm. Also check the history after your child has been on line and if necessary use a Key-logger or other software to keep track of where they are going and what they are accessing. The same is true for Cell-Phones used by youngsters. You are your child’s parent not their friend and it’s a matter of safety not privacy.

If pedophilia is not a capital crime, it should be.
