Here We Go Again: Dumb Burglars Snort Stolen Cremains!

By , About.com GuideJanuary 19, 2011

Follow me on:

The New York Daily News and other venues are reporting that three teenage thieves stole what they thought was a stash of cocaine from someone's home in Marion County, Florida, and snorted it.

Come to find out, supposedly, the white powder they put up their noses was actually the cremated remains of the homeowner's father and two dogs.

I know. Ew.

Despite the existence of an official Sheriff's report detailing all this, however, I'm more than a little skeptical. After all, we've heard this story before — 15 years ago, as a matter of fact — and it proved to be an urban legend.

Stay tuned for results of the trial.

Is someone soon going to be in trouble for filing a false police report, or is this a case of life imitating legend?

First time I heard of this was in the 1981 movie Honky Tonk Freeway. A woman is taking her mother’s ashes to Florida. A character swipes the urn and thinks the ashes are coke. But I’ll bet the notion goes back at least to the 70s.

Must say, saddly, am doubting your web site? Have always said “check” Urban Legends. Couple things lately has made me be not so trusting in your Info.If info on ashes is not true, w/ arrests made, then shame on Sherrifs department !!

No one has said it isn’t true. Some have expressed skepticism about the story given that it so much resembles a well-known urban legend. Criminal confessions can be false; Sheriff’s reports can be inaccurate. Time – and a trial – will tell.

If you’ve ever seen a person’s ashes, you know that they are anything but powdery. If you like snorting gravel, fine. Because that’s what cremated “ashes” look like.

Yes, indeed they did steal the cremains… 2 out of 3 of the urns were recovered from a pond where the teens had tossed them.
It’s been on the news here for days!

Maybe they got the idea from The Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards who said he snorted his dad’s ashes with a bit of cocaine, though he later claimed it was an off-the-cuff comment made in jest.

Really, it’s no crazier than buying and using street drugs. The average addict has no way knowing what the drugs have been cut with, and that can be some pretty bad stuff. But that need to get high compels them to snort first and ask questions later…maybe.

It’s funny how folks will gag at the idea of snorting cremation ashes–mostly dry calcium phosphates–yet don’t give a second thought to breathing the polluted, poisonous air inundating our cities.
