Ronald Reagan to Surgeons: 'I Hope You're All Republicans'

By , About.com GuideFebruary 6, 2011

Follow me on:

Among the larger-than-life traits for which President Ronald Reagan is remembered was his irrepressible sense of humor, which withstood even an assassin's bullet after the attempt on his life on March 30, 1981.

"I hope you're all Republicans," said the President to the chief surgeon as he was wheeled into the operating room. "We're all Republicans today, Mr. President," the doctor, a Democrat, replied.

It sounds like movie dialogue, I know; but it really happened.

One of the participants at the occasion of Reagan speaking to the Washington press corp during his tenure as President was a story by Reagen of a B17 bomber crew in WWII flying back to its base in England after a bombing raid over Germany. The bomber was so badly shot up that its pilot was sure they would not make it back. He ordered his crew to jump for their own lives using their parachutes. Setting the plane on an auto pilot function and was going to the back to jump himself he head the cries of his belly gunner who was trapped in the badly damaged ball turret which could not be rolled back into its place so the gunner could be removed safely. He was torn deciding whether he would jump or stay with his gunner and die with him. He chose to reach in and hold the gunner’s hand and the died together. According to Reagen he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor posthumously. That one participant thought it was interesting that Reagen knew what happened when all the others jumped earlier. How did he know he reached into the only opening that was available to the trapped gunner. So being a good writer he researched the posthumously awarded Congressional Medals of Honor. Not one record showed that there was such an award. Then he researched the movies made with this kind of plot. He found the 1962 film “The War Lover,” starring Steve McQueen. Further research showed that a lot of what Reagen spoke about at other meetings were stories that were not real but were from the movies. The man was a mesmerizing figure, I will easily admit but his reality was in the movies and was not based on reality. Thank God he was not heavy into “Dr. Strange Love.”

Here is an update to the Reagan controversy:
Did Reagan have Alzheimer’s during his presidency?

Apparently the controversy is over! Scientific American has a website story that points out that only recently have they been able to use an MRI of the brain to confirm the Alzheimer’s diagnosis. So taking this new found understanding of what they are seeing on MRI’s of the brain, they went back to assess Reagan’s MRI’s which were taken while he was in office. Using this new assessment technique they found,”Reagan was well along the glide path to dementia when he was staring down the Evil Empire.”

Geez, that’ll be Obama’s NEXT excuse for his failure to produce results.

‘It’s not my fault! Bush, he did something! He gave me dementia!”

Say what you want about Reagan, he’s still giving our country hope: He’s proof that a Democrat can make a great Republican…but even cured Democrats are still mentally diseased.

@AngryAngel

You want to talk fantasy stories delivered as true, let’s look to 2008 on the campaign trail, when Obama told the very imaginative story about his Uncle helping to liberate Auschwitz in WW2 when he was in the Army.
It really begged the question of which army, seeing as the US Army never even advanced past Germany, much less into Poland, the location of Auschwitz. So, a)either Obama got nearly every detail of his own story incorrect, b) it was a wholesale fabrication, or c) His uncle must have served in the Russian Red Army in WW2.
All possible explanations raise very alarming concerns. People in all 57 states should be concerned. Oh, there are only 50 states? Sorry, I was taking the President’s word for it that we’d gained an extra 7.

Now, I was young at the time, but I remember watching Reagan speak many, many times with no teleprompter and no notes, he recited from memory. Does this imply that a President ‘on the glide path to dementia’ as you put it, was still a better speaker with a better memory WITH Alzheimer’s than Obama, who has to stop and have the prompter rewound if he misses a line before he can continue?

As much as Reagan was able to accomplish with Alzheimer’s, just image how much more could have been done had he not…we’d probably have a colony on Mars today (dream killed thanks to Obama killing NASA).
