A forwarded email offers questionable advice to folks in need of emergency services, namely to dial *112 on any mobile phone for a direct line to the police. Far from working "in all 50 states" as claimed, however, dialing *112 in an emergency within the U.S. may be more akin to playing Russian roulette with your life.
Though 112 is a standard emergency number in Europe and other parts of the world, it only works in the United States if you happen to be using a type of phone configured to automatically redirect such calls to the nearest emergency dispatcher. 911 is still your best bet!
