NY State Police: 'Uniform Traffic Ticket' Email May Contain a Virus

The New York State Police issued an alert yesterday warning recipients of a spam email purporting to deliver a speeding ticket not to click on the attached zip file, which "likely" contains a computer virus. The email did not originate from the State Police or any other government agency, the alert said.

Most people are no doubt savvy enough to realize that traffic tickets aren't distributed via email, but some may be tempted to open the attachment out of curiosity — an unwise move, needless to say. Forensics experts are analyzing the file attachment to determine what, if any, virus it contains. See details and updates...

(5) Ojaibrad says:

ALBANY, N.Y. — State police in New York are warning about a virus-laden email that appears to be a notice of a speeding ticket.

They say the bogus email is likely to have “Uniform Traffic Ticket” in the subject line and an attached zip file described as a ticket from the Department of Motor Vehicles that can be filled out and mailed to a local court.

Opening that attachment can infect the user’s computer. State police Sgt. Kern Svoboda says reports of the email have been coming in from across the country, starting overnight Wednesday. He says investigators with the Computer Crime Unit haven’t yet identified the type of infection carried by the email.

The email and its attachment shouldn’t be opened. If they are, update and run anti-virus software.

(23) Jeff says:

I opened this one because Yahoo Norton said “no virus detected.”

If you have this problem run SYSTEM RESTORE and set your computer back one day. Don’t reformat your system, doing a restore seems to have worked just fine.

You’ll have to shut your computer off, put in a windows disk and run your computer up in SAFE MODE. Then hit control/alt/delete and bring up task manager.

Click “new task” it’s one of the 3 buttons at the bottom. In the window you get type RESTORE. You will then get a window with 5 icons in it. Click the computer icon (the one that is blue with a green arrow pointing at it and a clock overlaid on it). This will run your windows restore and you can choose a date to roll back to.

So…with all the great technology and spy ‘stuff’, we can’t trace these spams to their source?

(25) Jonathan says:

I got this e-mail my self but being a new yorker I opened it with out thinking . It is a prank virus that switches your command keys and hot keys around (ie. enter key becomes esc or space bar becomes the F10 key). Theres no real harm done to your operating system how ever is simple reboot will not correct it. Pretty simple to fix if you have a friend with some level of computer knowledge. I’m a computer software programmer so it was kind of fun to fix(Huge headache never the less).

(26) Lynn says:

I received this same email 11/3/11. How do these people get your email address?

November 17, 2011 at 5:27 am
(27) Jan says:

I live in the UK and have received 2 e-mails TODAY as described above. They purport to be from support@sky.com and both have the “Person Described Above” as jan. ********** and jan.*****; NOT ME I HAVE TO SAY!!!!!!!!!!!

I have phoned SKY and am awaiting a call back from them to get their “phishing” web account so as to report this scam. All major web account holders have a “phishing” e-mail address where “scam” documents can be forwarded to their Security Department for them to investigate.

PHEW – DON’T OPEN ANY ATTACHMENTS UNLESS YOU ARE SURE YOU KNOW THE SOURCE.
