The Times of India reports that forwarded emails warning of the criminal use of a stupefying South American street drug called Burundanga have caused "quite a scare in the country," despite the fact that New Delhi police say they've never come across such a drug in the city.
The same rumors have circulated for several years in the United States and elsewhere, and for the most part are false. Burundanga does exist and is known to have been used by criminals to incapacitate victims in Colombia, but there's little to no documentary evidence of its proliferation outside South America.

Again, why do these false rumors gain traction? It amazes me that people take time out of their day to start stupid stories.
I guess third world countries are starting to be impacted by these rumors, just like the rest of the world….sad.
I think it just rumor.
One would think that with the same rumors spread over and over they would know there is no basis to believe it.
to all the ignorant and unaware,,this is true..do yourself a favor, ask yourself if this was a rumor how would it profit anyone?? get control over people’s mind and rule the world?? anyways, i took time out to write this to let people know that the use of BURUNDANGA has been detected in New Delhi, my close relative being one of the victim recently; attacks most of the time through handing over visiting card/brochures/etc. My one cent: dont be an ignorant,be careful..
Yes – most reports are hoaxes / scares.. Yes this drug does have the ability as a hypnotic. And – in defined circumstances – can be used to induce unconsciousness/ dizziness / blackouts – to incapacitate / render helpless ..etc.
But not normally in the way described.
The e-mail that reached ME thru a relative – had the identical wording as that reported in the US from 2008 !! If THAT isn’t 100 pct evidence of copying past examples Ditto – re. Scare tactics & Hoaxing / generating controversy – I would ask – WHAT IS ?.
And – Yes – it may not be easily available or widely distributed. But then criminals have their ways of obtaining even controlled substances.
Lastly a word of advice / caution from a person (myself) who has – let us loosely/ euphemistically say – quite “substantial awareness” of ‘substances’. Let me warn everyone – that despite the hoaxing / mischief making etc – and despite the denials that say that this substance cannot be administered as described – there ARE substances which I shall not name – (as it could lead to actual abuse & crime) – which WOULD have the effect described – when used in conjunction with the substance mentioned in this article on its debunking.
One should take that as a cautionary warning.
