Did Michele Bachmann Ask a Crowd, 'Who Likes White People?'

By , About.com GuideAugust 29, 2011

No. A viral video containing a brief excerpt from a speech given by Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann is being circulated under false pretenses.

She does not, as some have alleged (and as might appear on first hearing), say "Who likes white people?" It was raining when Bachmann took the stage, The Ticket's Chris Moody explains, and what she actually asked the crowd was, "Who likes wet people?" She continued: "Because we have the God of the winds and the rain don't we? We serve a mighty God."

Click here for an unedited version of the video.

(Thanks to Robert Heckman for the tip.)

Mark my word – if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they’re sure trying to do so, it’s going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can’t and won’t compromise. I know. I’ve tried to deal with them.”
