This much we know for sure: the beloved Christmas character Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was created by Montgomery Ward copywriter Bob May in 1939, and featured in the company's annual holiday advertising for years afterward.

According to May's own account, he came up with the idea at the behest of his supervisor. According to the Internet, his motivation was much more personal. Read more...
