No one knows exactly how or when April Fools' Day originated, but it may have had something to do with the adoption of the Gregorian calendar in the mid-1600s, which resulted in New Year's Day being switched from the last week in March to the first of January.
Legend has it i.e., for all we know, it's utter nonsense that the very first "April fools" were those clueless few who, because they were ignorant or skeptical of the calendrical change, continued to ring in the New Year on the eve of April 1.
