Ghost of the Sundarbans / Fort Mountain Ghost - Analysis

Part 1: Chain Letter
Part 2: Ghost Photo

The "ghost" in the preceding image seemed awfully familiar when the earliest version of this chain letter first landed in my inbox in November 2003, so I searched the archives and confirmed my suspicions: she has appeared before in another photograph allegedly taken in Malaysia during World War II. The "ghost" was obviously cut and pasted from the earlier image into the present one (side-by-side comparison here).

Allegedly snapped in the Sundarbans (a national park in Bangladesh), the current version actually began circulating back in September 2003, when it caused a bit of a stir in Trichy, India. A different story accompanied it then, claiming that the boy in the photo (who supposedly fell into a coma soon after it was snapped) was one of a group of Bangalore students touring the Pulianjolai hills. It frightened quite a few people locally, judging from news reports at the time.

Nevertheless, there is no reason to suppose that anything supernatural happened in these images. "Ghost," "spirit" or "psychic" photos, as they are variously called, are easily faked by double-exposing a frame of film or manipulating the image during processing. Indeed, this particular form of humbuggery has a long history dating from the earliest days of photography itself.

Addendum: It has been brought to my attention that the same mysterious lady also appears in a "ghost cam video" — actually an animated GIF image — which made the email rounds in late 2001/early 2002. Be sure to observe the image for at least 30 seconds to catch our old friend in action.
