Cracker Barrel Chain Letter

Email text contributed by Molly Scott, 16 Oct. 2000:

Subject: Fwd: FW: [Gift Certificate from Cracker Barrel]

My name is Junior Johnson, founder of Cracker Barrel. In an attempt to get our name out to more people in the rural communities where we are not currently located, we are offering a $50 gift certificate to anyone who forwards this email to 9 of their friends. Just send this email to them and you will receive an email back with a confirmation number to claim your gift certificate.

Sincerely
Junior Johnson
Founder of Cracker Barrel

Hey guys,
DONT DELETE THIS EMAIL
It really works, I tried it and got my Gift certificate confirmation number in 3 minutes.

Comments:  We hope people who receive this message will ask themselves one simple and obvious question before passing it along: How are the Cracker Barrel folks supposed to determine how many people you've forwarded it to?

Here's a valuable bit of trivia: email chain letters of this sort can and do circulate to a million or more people in a relatively short period of time. If this were a valid promotion, Cracker Barrel would would have to give away millions of dollars in gift certificates ... to people who forward chain letters.

Nobody named "Junior Johnson" works for Cracker Barrel, let alone founded the company. Don't take our word for it – read the company's own statement on the matter.

This is a copycat hoax based on more than a dozen previous examples. See Freebie Chain Letter Hoaxes for more.
