Nostradamus Predicts: Village Idiot Becomes Great Leader in New Millennium

Description: Email joke
Circulating since: Dec. 2000
Status: False

Email example contributed by Kimberley P., 17 Dec. 2000:

In 1555, Nostradamus wrote:

"Come the millennium, month 12
In the home of greatest power,
The village idiot will come forth
To be acclaimed the leader."

Comments: Funny to Democrats, not so funny to Republicans. This is a joke, commenting sarcastically on the outcome of the 2000 U.S. presidential election.

Did Nostradamus write these words? No. One reason we can be sure of this is that, at least as far as Bush detractors are concerned, the "prediction" comes across as clear and correct with a minimum of interpretation. In actual practice, the prophecies of Nostradamus require a great deal of creative fudging to make them seem relevant to current events.

Consider the following serious effort to extract the outcome of the election from a real quatrain by Nostradamus:

Nostradamus foretells loss for Bush in 2000

Even great prophets can't always be right, right?
