Email text contributed by Laura Glynn, 29 January 2001:

On NPR's Morning Edition last week, Nina Tottenberg said that if the Supreme Court supports Congress, it is the end of the National Public Radio (NPR), NEA & the Public Broadcasting System (PBS).

The arts are facing major cutbacks in funding. Inspite of the efforts of each station to reduce spending costs and streamline their services, some government officials believe that the current funding to these programs is too large a portion of funding for something which is seen as not worthwhile.

The only way that our representatives can be aware of the support for PBS and funding for these types of programs is by making our voices heard. Please add your name to this list and forward it to friends who believe in what this stands for. This petition is being passed around the Internet, and will be forwarded to the President and the Vice President of the United States.

This is for anyone who thinks NPR/PBS is a worthwhile expenditure of $1.12/year of their taxes.

Why should I sign this list?

Because you believe a dollar and twelve cents is pocket change that can help save the public television and radio programs that the government thinks you don't care about.

Do you know a friend or family member invloved in the arts? We're talking about their immediate future here.

Signing this list will cost you no money! It simply tells our government that you think the arts are worth saving.

Your email is kept completely confidential, and will not be used for any other purposes!
This is not junk mail or spam, it is simply a petition.

If you sign, please forward on to others. If not, please don't kill it. Send it to the Email address listed here: wein2688@blue.univnorthco.edu

HOW TO SIGN & FORWARD -IT'S EASY: SELECT (highlight) this entire letter and then COPY it into a new outgoing message, rather than simply forwarding it. In your new outgoing message, add your name to the bottom of the list, then send it on.

Comments:  Now in its ninth year of circulation and long since disavowed by its authors, this misbegotten petition shows no signs of waning. The email addresses are dead, the facts and figures outdated and the endless roster of signatories worthless, but the document itself appears to be invincible. Long after the sun has burnt itself out and our solar system has devolved into the nebulous gasses from which it sprang, the "Save NPR" petition will still exist, forwarded from one corner of the globe to the next and back again ... because it's just that goshdarned cosmically important.

See "The Case of the Pointless Petition" for details of its origin and history.
