SCAM: 'Flight MH370 Found in Indian Ocean' Video

By

As shared on Facebook, April 7, 2014:
Flight MH370 FOUND in Indian Ocean

Netlore Archive: Social media clickjacking scam promotes a video supposedly showing the recovery of missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 in the Indian Ocean.

Via Facebook

Description: Viral posts
Circulating since: April 2014
Status: SCAM (see details below)

Analysis: No such video exists. This is a survey scam exploiting the loss of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, which vanished on March 8, 2014 en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing and is presumed to have gone down in the southern Indian Ocean with no survivors. No confirmed traces of the plane have yet been found.

Users who click on blurbs touting videos of the supposed recovery of Flight MH370 are redirected first to a phony Facebook page where they're prompted to share the video (before viewing it), then to a promotional website where they're prompted to take surveys, purchase goods or services, etc. Posts like these may also contain links to malicious software, so beware.

Don't risk the security of your Facebook account, device, or network by falling for scam bait in the form of "shocking videos" or "breaking news" posts. If one turns up in your news feed, delete it. Advise your friends to do the same.
